The BBC docuseries "The Death of Yugoslavia" (1995) portrays the breakup of Yugoslavia as a largely elite-driven affair. To what extent is this depiction accurate?
I'm watching the excellent 1995 BBC docuseries "The Death of Yugoslavia" right now, and I'm struck by how elite-driven (if not quasi-Great Man) its narrative/"historiographical" is. While it does talk about events happening on the ground outside the elites' control (e.g. the initial unrest in Kosovo, the "Log Rebellion" in Knin, etc), the docuseries seems to place the greater weight of explanatory importance on how elites like Milosevic, Tudjman, and others respond to these forces in smokey backrooms, cabinet meetings and party congresses.
I understand that this focus on elites is somewhat intrinsic in the BBC's choice to foreground "all-star" interviews with the major heavy-hitters of all sides, but I'm wondering to what extent this elite-driven process explanation of how Yugoslavia fractured into all-out war is accurate or reflective of current trends in Yugoslav War historiography. And are there alternative, possibly more structural or grassroots, explanations for the collapse of Yugoslavia?

What did Tito do so well to prevent the breakup of Yugoslavia?
I read that the state had control of the media, but it seems that what happened in Kosovo between Albanians and Serbs could have happened without the media. Where there laws and punishments for nationalist sentiment and organizing, and if so, how did these not backfire?

Do people who moved from Yugoslavia to the USA prior to the breakup consider themselves Yugoslav-American rather than Croatian or Slovenian-American etc?

Books on socialist Yugoslavia and Tito? (Not focused on breakup and breakup-related conflict)
Hi, I'm interested in reading a book that focuses on the history of socialist Yugoslavia: Tito, conflicts with Stalin, regular folks' lives and jobs, public works projects, production and consumption of culture, that kind of thing.
Most books I've seen recommended here and elsewhere seem to either focus on the breakup and resulting conflict, or they seem to be longer historical overviews of the entire Balkans. Those are great, and I'll probably read Mazower and/or Glenny as well. But I'm wondering if there's something suitable to my more narrow interest too.

Between 1992 & 1994, Yugoslavia went through one of the worst periods of hyperinflation in world history, peaking at over 116 billion percent, & forcing the government to mint larger & larger currency denominations.

Pop history often presents Yugoslavia as a "nationalist time bomb" destined to blow, held together only by the force of strongman President Tito. But he died in 1980 and the first Yugoslav war began in 1991. What was really going on?
