My son was born yesterday and is in the NICU. [META]

What are your best dad jokes? Whoever tells me the funniest one will have the honor of knowing their dad joke was my first as a dad.

Edit: there are two winners.

The first is one I told to my wife. It is about him being born with 4 kidneys but two of them will become adult knees. Thank you u/cabbithunt

The second I told me son. "There are two fish in a tank. One fish looks at the other and says 'I'll drive you man the guns.'" Thank you u/kiabe1

Edit 2: After two weeks in the NICU, we have convinced the doctors to let us upgraded to the wireless home version. Thank you all for your well wishes and jokes.

Looking for old romcom(1930's-1950's-ish) fantasy films

I have a weakness for movies like "I married a witch" or "the invisible woman", basically old romcoms with fantasy/supernatural sprinkled in it. Any suggestions?

Typical lighthearted romcoms also works

Thanks

Sidney Poitier's First Feature Film: No Way Out (1950)

No Way Out (1950)

Despite not receiving billing on the poster, Sidney Poitier is clearly the star of \"No Way Out\" (1950)

The cool thing about film noir is that it can be set anywhere. I recently watched "The Garment Jungle" about the garment district and the original "Nightmare Alley" about a traveling circus. "No Way Out" takes place mostly in a county hospital.

Newly graduated doctor Luther Brooks (a very young Sidney Poitier, who is unquestionably the star of the film despite being billed fourth in the credits and under the title - behind Richard Widmark, Linda Darnell, and "Criss Cross's" Stephen McNally) does his best to save the lives of two criminal brothers, but one of them dies. The other (Widmark, in a shocking performance) accuses the doctor of killing his brother. Why? Because the doctor is black.

The only way for Sidney Poitier's character to possibly prove his innocence is by having an autopsy done, but that requires the consent of a family member - and Widmark's racist character point blank refuses.

There are enough n-words and other racial epithets in this movie to make even Quentin Tarantino blush. It is alarming, even by today's standards, how openly and casually everyone voices their racist thoughts and views. There is also an outdated "deaf and dumb" plot device - making this the second noir I've seen in mere weeks with that tired stereotype (the other being "Out of the Past"). At least the character here is used more cleverly.

This is about as nasty and bleak as noir gets, and a great beginning to a legendary career. (Subtitles/Captions: Yes!)

[TOMT][MOVIE][1950s-1990s] I named my turtle "Herbert" after a pet turtle in a movie. When a boy goes to shake a girl’s hand for a β€œtruce,” he slips his turtle Herbert into her hand, and she drops it. What's the name of the film?

My turtle turns 20 years old in April, and I’ve long forgotten the name of the film that included the turtle after which he’s named. The turtle in the film is completely insignificant to the plot, so I haven’t been able to find the film’s name by Googling.

In the film, a young boy and girl are outside, possibly in a grassy field. The children are both white, and I’d guess that they’reΒ somewhere between ages 7-14. (I’m not good at guessing children’s ages.) The boy might have a small group of friends with him (other boys). I’m not sure whether the boy and girl areΒ siblings, neighbors, classmates or some other relation; all I remember was that they wereΒ rivals of some sort. They went toΒ shake hands for a β€œtruce,” and the boy slips a small turtle into the girl’s hand as a joke, and she immediately withdraws her hand and drops it. Next, there’s a close-up shot of the turtle on the ground in the grass walking away, and then the film cuts toΒ the next scene.

I think the turtle was shown in an earlier scene if the film, maybe in its tank. I’m not sure how it’s revealed that the turtle’s name is "Herbert" β€” my best guess is that perhaps the boy said its name when showing it to his friends.

The turtle was the size of a half-dollar coin, small enough to be in the palm of a child’s hand, and it was a semiaquatic turtle (not a tortoise). I can’t clearly remember which species of turtle it was, and it’s hard for me to know what’s a true memory or just my mind trying to fill in the blanks. It was possibly a red-eared slider (which are green in color), a yellow-bellied cooter or other common turtle you can find in pet stores. Definitely not a snapper or softshell turtle.

It’s a color film with real people (not a cartoon / not animated). The setting was either in a rural area or possibly an older suburban area (definitely not in a city and probably not cookie-cutter identical suburban houses). The setting felt like it had a wholesome 1950s-1970s vibe, and the film most likely would have been released sometime between the 1950s-1990s. I think I watched it in school in 5th grade (which was 2001-2002), so it would have been appropriate for young kids, so I’d say it had to have been rated G, PG or unrated (if it was before films were rated). I don’t think the movie was used for any lesson plans; it was more likely just a random movie put on when we had a substitute teacher.

Yesterday was my birthday, wish I was never born

Existence is suffering. Craving is suffering. Good things are there for a short time just to make you hurt later. There is no meaning in life. Only suffering. We're already in hell wether we're aware of it or not. There is no escape from it. Personally I'm an atheist so I rely on death as the escape but even that's not certain. I don't want to live again after death in any form, I just wanna stop existing. Is it too much to ask for? People are living for dozens of years, suffer and tell themselves they're fine. Are they? Are we fine? In my opinion we're absolutely fucked. Each one of us. Life is like prison you could never actually escape. There's no promise of justice. We're only promised pain and suffering and agony and misery. "Why are we still here? Just to suffer."

[TOMT] a movie/tv show/film about a 1950’s science fiction writer

1950’s-setting, A man (who I stg was John Magaro but I can’t find anything on his IMDb) is an aspiring science fiction writer who lands a job as a secretary/some other secretarial role at a famous science fiction publisher who publishes the likes of Isaac Asimov and Ray Bradbury. He and two other interns there (one male and one female) decide to work together to improve their writing. Very clear that male and female interns like each other. While sharing their work, male and female interns work are very good, but main characters work is complete garbage. They try to critique without telling him it’s shit. Main character gets offended. He presents his work to Ray Bradbury/Isaac Asimov (can’t remember which one) while they are at his job. Bradbury/Asimov takes it and tells main character he will make some edits and send it back. Sometime later, main character gets his work back but it’s completely changed by the famous author (every word)

[TOMT] [MOVIE] [2000's] - a (presumably) Russian film set in 1950's USSR, tells a story about a group of rebellious young people who start an "American Culture" club; they dress like Americans, listen to American music, and get severely prosecuted for it.

I watched it accidentally on TV and remembered ever since. It looked quite well-made, with good actors, camera work, and OST. It was also rather sad, because most of the characters get in serious trouble and the group falls apart in the end.

One scene I remember very clearly: a young man exits a run-down soviet apartment home in a new bright green suit. He looks nervous and in a rush. A group of impoverished kids next to the building notice him and immediately see him as an enemy - they start cursing and throwing rocks at him, chasing him down the street. The man grows even more nervous and rushes further ahead.

My friend and I realized we both watched the film but none of us can remember the name. Please help~

[TOMT][Movie] [1930s-1950s]Most likely French Noir Film where a detective rides in taxis everywhere.

I saw a great, bleak Noir Detective film in black and white (most likely french but maybe another colder darker place) with subtitles. It took place in a bleak city and the detective didn't have a car of his own he would have to get Taxis everywhere and it was cold. He would even arrest people and chuck them into a taxi to bring them downtown.

It seemed like everyone was really poor including the law officers and the criminals.
