BOCA RATON, Fla. β In a battle of two elevation-based teams, one man was truly King of the Hill: Bailey Zappe.
Western Kentucky senior QB Bailey Zappe concluded a historic season by setting two FBS passing recordsβyards and TDsβen route to leading his Hilltoppers (9β5, 7β2 C-USA) to a convincing 59β38 win over Appalachian State Mountaineers (10β4, 7β2 Sun Belt).
Zappe (pronounced βzappyβ) entered the game with 5,545 passing yards, 289 yards shy of the record of 5,833 yards set by Texas Techβs B.J. Symons in 2003. Zappe also had 56 passing TDs before the game, needing five to break the record of 60 set by LSUβs Joe Burrow in 2019.
The potential for history in the bowl game was not lost on the WKU sideline, particularly WKU head coach Tyson Helton.
β[I was] very aware [of the records],β said Helton. βThe [amount of] passing [yards in this game] . . . is a pretty normal day for us, but it felt like once he stayed healthy, he was going to be fine there.β
Indeed, he was.
Zappe needed less than two quarters to break the yards record, connecting with junior WR Jerreth Sterns for 43 yards with 1:24 left in the second quarter to eclipse the mark. Zappe would end the day with 422 passing yards and a grand total of 5,967 yards on the season.
While he knew that he was close to the passing record, Zappe didnβt know exactly when he broke the mark until later. βI had no idea about the yards. Actually [Sterns] was the one who told me at halftime . . . . Itβs hard to keep up with yards,β Zappe said.
Zappe then turned his attention entirely toward Burrowβs passing TD record. By the time he set the yards record, he had already thrown three touchdowns, leaving him two away from the record. He tied Burrow with 29 seconds left in the second quarter on a 10 yard pass to Sterns. Zappe then broke the record with 5:56 remaining in the third quarter on a two yard pass to junior WR Mitchell Tinsley. Just for good measure, Zappe connected with Sterns on a 37-yard pass a little over three minutes for his sixth and final touchdown of the game, ending the season with 62.

BOCA RATON, FL β Playing in front of their home crowd with a record season on the line, the FAU Owls set aside a bevy of distractions to take down the SMU Mustangs 52β28 in the 2019 Cheribundi Boca Raton Bowl.
C-USA champion FAU (11β3, 8β1 C-USA) defeated an SMU team (10β3, 6β2 AAC) that carried New Yearβs Six bowl aspirations deep into the regular season. The Mustangs were favored not only because of their on-the-field success, but because the Owls were missing many key personnel. Former head coach Lane Kiffin dominated the headlines surrounding the team for the past few weeks as he departed to coach Ole Miss. The team was also missing five of its starters: redshirt senior DE Tim Bonner and unanimous All-American senior TE Harrison Bryant sat out to prepare for the NFL Draft, while graduate WR Deangelo Antoine, redshirt senior WR Tavaris Harrison, and junior LB Akileis Leroy were suspended for academics reasons.
The game started slowly as the teams punted on five consecutive drives, three of which were 3-and-outs. FAU got the only points of the 1st quarter on a 1 yard rush by junior RB BJ Emmons with 3:11 left in the quarter. The scoring started to pick up after that with the teams trading three touchdowns in the 2nd quarter, leading to a 14β14 tie with 2:12 remaining. It was at this point that FAU began to pull away by scoring two touchdowns in under two minutes, the second of which was set up by a 22 yard interception by the gameβs defensive MVP senior LB Rashad Smith, to take a 28β14 lead into halftime.
The Owls were able to blank the Mustangs in the 3rd quarter due in no small part to the efforts of special teams MVP redshirt freshman P Matt Hayball, who averaged 48 yards per punt and was able to pin SMU inside their 20 yard line twice. FAU was able to add two more touchdowns in the quarter, including one that came on a fumble recovery by Smith that he ran back 34 yards to extend the Owlsβ lead to 42β14.
SMU would add a couple of more touchdowns late in the game, but FAU continued to add points to keep the game out of reach. They capped off their scoring with a 23 yard pass from redshirt sophomore backup QB Nick Tronti to freshman WR Javion Posey, a score that Twitter user @Jensen_Jennings described as being βthe cherry on topβ of the game β a pun referring to the gameβs sponsor Cheribundi, which makes cherry juice.
