Argument Recap: National Collegiate Athletic Association v. Alston
>Issue: Whether the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 9th Circuit erroneously held, in conflict with decisions of other circuits and general antitrust principles, that the National Collegiate Athletic Association eligibility rules regarding compensation of student-athletes violate federal antitrust law.
Funny moment occurred when Waxman referred to Justice Thomas as "Chief Justice Thomas" which produced a good bit of laughter where Justice Thomas thanked him for the promotion. Really hope Justice Thomas continues asking questions when they go back to regular in person arguments.
As an aside:
- Justice Thomas is perplexed that coaches' salaries that ballooned and they are in the "amateur ranks" like the players are.
- Justice Alito is extremely skeptical of the NCAA definition of amateurism
- Justice Kagan implies the NCAA is engaging in collusion and price fixing when she states the org. has "undisputed market power".
- Justice Gorsuch seems unimpressed as, verbatim, he doesn't think Waxman actually answered his question. He also adds: " The agreement that is at the center of the case is an agreement among competitors to fix prices in a labor market. The NCAA has monsopny control over labor price. This isnβt like pro leagues (where they negotiate with a players' association)."
- Justice Kavanaugh absolutely roasts the NCAA: "It seems schools are conspiring...I'll say agreeing to competitors to pay no salaries to workers who are making schools billions of dollars on the theory that consumers want schools to pay their workers nothing....That's disturbing"

UConn defeated the former champions, University of Montana, 6-5 to 1-13. The Huskies played an excellent series, going 4-0.
All teams in the tournament played their hearts out and it was truly an honor to play against them.
I'm so proud of this team and what we have accomplished this year. I only just joined this year, so seeing the drive and dedication of these men and women and pulling it off at the end has been a great introduction to this sport.
