TL/DR My hardrive was mistaken as a powerbank and removed from my checked bag and most likely disposed of by Air New Zealand. Hard drive contains our wedding photos and videos as well as other important things, our honeymoon has been hard to enjoy....
On the 9th I flew from Queenstown to Auckland NewZealand with my wife as part of our Honeymoon (we are both American). When I opened my bag for the first time on the 11 I noticed my hardrive and GoPro batteries were missing (the hard drive includes the only originals of our wedding photos and videos as well as everything from my past 5 years, yes I know I should have backed it up but that is besides the point). I immediately called AVSEC Aviation Security Service, during this time I found a small piece of paper in the back pocket sayin my bag was searched and a βpower bankβ and 5 GoPro batteries were removed. They confirmed that the items were removed and handed over to the airlines (Air New Zealand). I have been on the phone and doing emails for the past 2 days trying to track the hard drive down. Air New Zealand has a policy that they dispose of all confinscated goods after 24 hours so the chance of them finding it is low. Hard drives are completely legal to carry in check goods and they just mistook it as a power bank.
I really donβt know what to do. The wife has been in tears and it has really put a damper on the honeymoon. Any advice would be much appreciated. What questions should I be asking? Would they have insurance for this kind of thing? How do you value something like this?
Until the 25th of January the Reserve bank of New Zealand (RBNZ) is consulting with the public on a number of issues, one issue being: should bank deposits in New Zealand be insured?
Some scenarios are summarized; -status quo (no deposit insurance)
-a depositor preferential liquidation scheme (depositors are quicker to receive liquid money as uposed to waiting in line behind creditors)
-and deposit insurance (where an external company either bank/depositor owned or tax payer owned guarantees each deposit account up to an arbitrary amount).
It is acknowledged that in a liquidity crisis tax payer money could be needed in a buy in/out manner.
the below image summarises the current financial instituation well (capital=money/good assets, liability=deposit accounts, assets=loans).

This is the best tl;dr I could make, original reduced by 40%. (I'm a bot)
> The world's first HIV-positive sperm bank launched in New Zealand on Wednesday, with a goal of reducing the stigma often faced by people with the virus.
> Each of the three HIV-positive men who have already signed up for the sperm bank have a "Consistently undetectable viral load." This means a person with HIV, who maintains treatment, cannot pass the virus to others, according to medical experts.
> "An HIV-positive sperm bank is perfectly safe," infectious diseases physician and Auckland University professor Mark Thomas said in a statement supporting the launch of the sperm bank, which was named Sperm Positive.
> "When a person is consistently taking effective treatment for their HIV infection, the amount of the HIV virus in their blood and sexual fluids is almost always reduced to an undetectable amount," he added.
> Rodrigo Olin from the New Zealand AIDS Foundation, one of the organizations that initiated the project, told Radio New Zealand that people living with HIV often fear telling others.
> "Unfortunately, the stigma is still pushing people not to disclose their HIV status," he said.
