B&W and Free. This IS the best war film ever without any bloodshed. This film was so important to Peck that he played the role for free. It was so damning to the military they refused all help and the director had to use an Austrian submarine and other military scenes from other countries for filming. If you really watch and listen to this movie, it will seriously change your life and you will discover just how precious and delicate life is and how we are affected by war, and the worst thing is you will realize just how true the story can be today than in 1959. Ava Gardners acting was gripping, I actually had a difficult time sleeping when I watched this film.
