A response to Jason Calacanis, Robinhood angel investor, who just called us a "cult" on CNBC and asked us to not YOLO our savings before buying a home and paying for kids college

Dear Jason Calacanis,

I just witnessed you giving unsolicited advice to retail investors in their 20s and 30s to not put 99% of their savings into the market and play it safe. You ask them to first buy a home, and save enough to pay for their kids college funds.

Last I checked we do not live in the 1950s where you could a house with 2 years or so of your salary. You're asking people in their 20s and 30s to wait until they're in their 40s and 50s to buy their first home and then yolo whatever is left of their savings when they are boomer age.

Oh, and one more thing. Did it occur to you that almost all of your profit from Robinhood comes from this "cult" yoloing their life savings into it. Fortunately, the cult will be migrating from your platform soon.

Respectfully go fuck yourself,

The cult of apes

PS. Never understood why CNBC is obsessed with educating us the cult, after all we are the losers according to them, what do they have to lose?

Any guides on "how to approach angel investors "?

I'm building a computer vision startup. I have a confounder, a pitch deck, and a crude demonstration platform.

How do I go about getting in touch with angels? Just find some online, see if I like them and then cold-email? Do I include my pitch deck in the first email, or first establish their interests, criteria, etc?

Basically just looking for some guidance - any appreciated.

After fatFIRE, becoming an angel investor and starting your own VC could be a good way to pass time. Has anyone done this?

What does it take to become an angel investor and to start your own VC firm? Aside from having capital, do you also need certifications? How do you find startup investment opportunities? Networking? AngelList? Meetups?

If anyone can share their story, it would be appreciated.

Anti dilution term from Angel Investor

My angel investor is asking for an anti dilution term. He is asking to put a cap of number of share we can issue in future rounds. They want to dilute up to 50% only on further rounds. For example, if one angel is owning 10% now, s/he only wants to dilute up to 5%.

Is it a common practice in seed round?

It’s too much risk to provide control to seed investors. Can we structure the deal in a better way? For example, with time limit on contract etc.

I offered them pro-rata rights. They are not that interested.

Speculation: Elon Musk is the new Angel Investor in GME.

Think about it.

Too late to write a full synopsis because it's 12:30 am here and I've got work in the morning. But Elon Musk has the money to afford it and he likes his games & memes.

He obviously likes the Stonk (as he's mentioned GME a few times in the past) and I was wondering what his "HODL" tweet might have been referring to the other day. Considering HODL is our lingo!

Approaching angels investors. What works, what doesn't?

Hey there! Going through the tons of advice out there (some of which being contradictory) on how to best approach angel investors, what strategy has worked best for founders? As an angel, what approach do you really prefer?

- Cold emailing: Was cold emailing successful for you as a founder? Do you read and consider cold emails as an angel? If yes, what's the critical info you're looking for in the first email?

- Warm intros: As a founder, how much better was your conversion rate on getting a response on a warm intro vs a cold email if you have tried both approaches?

- Call to action: What call to action has worked for you? Just asking for a response via email? Asking for a call? Anything else?

Please feel free to add other relevant questions/aspects to the discussion I may have missed.

Some hedgies will now be required to cough up a shit ton on the shares they shorted by Tuesday. I’d expect the price to increase then.

The next short report was slated to be published on Tuesday, 2/9/21, but the SEC has stated they have a backlog and the report will not be available until the following week on 2/15/21. Many people have asked for a source and I cannot locate the original email I saw here so I’ll be contacting FINRA on Monday to verify myself. This is something anyone can do. You can also email the SEC webdesk.

I am the finance lead for a startup with my friends. We recently got contacted by a couple of local VC's and Angel investors after winning a entrepreneurship competition last week and I was curious on what things I should be prepared to talk about this early and what legal documents I should have ready. We already have an NDA, I was planning on sending our pitch deck along with an executive summary of our business and then sending an NDA afterwards to be able to talk about it freely. Is there anything else I should be doing/should look out for? We are pre revenue and only have raised 15k in seed funding.

From angel investor to VC partner?

Hi All - over the last 15 years I've invested into ~25 startups, around $30M of my own funds. Some have gone IPO, others gone bust, but overall it's been a good ride. I've invested while running my own startups and using funds from exits of both my own startups and investments. Generally I've invested $1-300k at seed or even preseed stage, and in many cases I've followed up in round A/B/etc - but generally I stay below $1.5M in one company.

Throughout my own startups I've raised VC capital a number of times, and I am now going through an exit of what I think will be my last startup and I'd like to be fully dedicated to investments. I am considering joining a VC to invest alongside partners and LPs - though, frankly I have no idea how I would go about doing that. I'd like to be an active investor, ie. I am not looking to be an LP - but ideally join at a partnerlevel, if that is even possible.

Can anyone here give me feedback as to how I could join an existing VC as a partner? I mean, it's not like those roles are advertised.

Yes, I know this post may sound naive, and while I am an experienced angel investor I have very little exposure to how the inside of a VC works. Your input would be very welcome.

Thanks!

We are Angel Investors

Lest anyone forget, or perhaps not understand, cytodyn is a start up biotech company. They have no ongoing revenue. Anyone who buys a share in this company must understand that they are an angel investor of sorts. You invest in a company because you believe within a certain time frame that company will begin to generate revenue...and that time frame is dependent upon the business said company is in as well as available capital and market conditions.

A start up biotech takes years to get going, but the payoff is potentially astronomical. Again, Cytodyn has no ongoing revenue, and as such sp is subject to speculation, perception, emotion and everything else, except earnings based valuation. With means it’s sp can go anywhere at anytime.

If you purchased shares of cydy looking to day trade, I hope you shorted the stock. If you purchased shares because you believe in the company (as I do), then just wait. I have not seen nor heard anything thus far that has changed my mind about my initial investment. Yes, mistakes have been made, but that is part of the process. These guys and gals at Cytodyn are smart people...they will learn from their mistakes and improve their processes going forward.

I am long CYDY and will continue to purchase shares right up until they have a EUA or a BLA.

Looking for an Adventure Angel Investor

I've been told so many times to try to find an angel investor for help funding our project, I've read many websites, books & mags about it, but I've never taken the step.

I do own a small family business, focused on hiking & adventure trips & experiences in the most remote areas of the world. We are based in Iceland, but we do also operate adventure experiences in the Faroes, Nepal and hopefully soon also in Kamchatka. We only work with local experienced guides in each destination, offering in our opinion, the best service possible.

We started before COVID19, and we were doing quite good. During COVID times, we even had some clients, but these days we are totally in standby. We do have so many projects in mind, but after this entire year, we are looking for funding to help us to get out of this hole.

I'm 100% open to start a conversation and to get any possible advice about how to proceed during these days. Thank you all!!

Got contacted by an angel investor, but we are stuck during the initial follow ups.

We have a tech startup running for 2-3 years. We already developed 2 apps using our own funds. I am working as CTO, overlooking the product development and my partner is working as CEO, overlooking all other aspects of the business. Now recently we have been contacted by an angel investor through an online startup portal, who is interested to invest a very handsome amount of money in our venture. Till now he requested for, Business overview, revenue model, future plan to manage the fund. Now after sending all the information, he is now asking for Equity sharing formula and ROI. We can draw up the ROI using revenue model, but as we don't have any financial advisor or CFO, we are not sure how we should give him a sharing formula. We have in our mind how we want to allocate shares for investors and other involved persons. Also share amount and initial prices. But we are not at all familiar with detailed share proposal options for an investor. I know, it may seem we had to make ready all kind of financial documents and equity measurements, but as we are still looking for a good finance advisor, suddenly this came up. Now we have like 24 hours to send this guy an equity sharing formula with proposal, any help will be much appreciated.

Angel Investors - What Did You Do Before Angel Investing?

What was your career like before becoming an angel? What did other angels you know do before becoming an angel?

Saving your salary and throwing it into index funds can build you a big pile of cash, but from what I understand, one of the only ways to become truly rich is by starting your own business or investing in other start-ups that are pre-IPO.

I’ve been looking into angel investing quite a bit because I’ve always been interested in people like Tim Ferriss and Naval Ravikant. They always seem to know something I don’t haha.

So I would love to know if there are many angel investors in this sub, and if you are one, what did you do before angel investing?

I feel like a lot of angels worked in finance, banking, or tech before becoming an angel. Am I wrong? Are people without finance, banking, or tech experience cursed to a life of only investing in public equities?

I’d love to hear your thoughts!

Investors, Co-Founders, Angels, VC's, Seed rounds, Series A, B and C - Doesn't all of this lead you to exactly what you tried to escape when you left the employee world and started your own company?

2 reasons for starting your own company

As I see it, there are 2 main reasons for leaving the work force and starting your own company:

  1. To make money

  2. Freedom. To be your own boss.

You end up as an employee in your own company

It seems to me the normal path most people take ends you up with very little equity in your own company. Sure you will have a lot of investments, network and guidance but you end up at the same place as when you were living the employee life:

That is, other people will still rule over you, demand things from you, tell you what to do, deadlines. You're no longer free, which was one of the main reasons you tried to break out from the rat race of the employee life.

"Well wouldn't you prefer a small piece of a big pie, rather than having a big piece of a small pie?"

Actually no. I would rather have the freedom, and control of my own company. Just the idea that I could get fired from my OWN company, which isn't unusual, is bizarre to me.

What are your thoughts on this? Is my thinking flawed?

  6. Team/Charity/Marketing/Angel Investors wallets vested from Smart contract.
  7. Transactions are limited at 1 Million $FEED tokens per operation.

- Team doxxed themselves via video, did a live AMA, and will be further sharing about themselves once FEED becomes a legal entity in the coming weeks. If you hang out in their TG, Sebastian and Martin (the main devs) are some of the nicest and most transparent people you'lll talk with.

- STRONG community backing the project. Even during the post-presale shenaningans and whale sells that have unfortunately become common in the BSC space, the community was nothing but positive and remained supportive of the project through all initial price dips. Now that the price is rallying back up, you can rest assured that this project has a solid base backing the project through thick and thin.

Any guilds on "how to approach angel investors"?

I'm building a computer vision startup. I have a confounder, a pitch deck, and a crude demonstration platform.

How do I go about getting in touch with angels? Just find some online, see if I like them and then cold-email? Do I include my pitch deck in the first email, or first establish their interests, criteria, etc?

Basically just looking for some guidance - any appreciated.
