Fun Fact: In a last lap photo finish, non playoff driver Dale Jarrett wound up edging out the win over playoff driver Dale Earnhardt Jr. Now all 4 spots are still up for grabs heading into the final cutoff race at Martinsville.

Fun Fact: In an absolute drama filled race at Martinsville, Kurt Busch, who entered the race 33 points above the cutline, ended up blowing an engine early in the race, DNFing him and wiping out his entire points cushion.
Fun Fact 2: Ryan Newman, who entered this race 8th, 23 points out in a virtual must win situation, dominated over half the race until he also would suffer a blown engine, ending his hopes at a Final Four appearance.
Fun Fact 3: In the closing moments of the race, Rusry Wallace, who came into this race 6th, 13 points out, was holding onto the lead over a hard charging Jimmie Johnson who was 5th, tied on points with Kurt Busch for 4th, but was outside due to tiebreaker. Unfortunately for Jimmie, he couldn't close in the gap as Rusty Wallace went onto win the race, punching his ticket into the Final Four as well as getting his first ever win of the season, while Jimmie Johnson would end up being eliminated by tiebreaker going to Kurt Busch.
So last year I ran the 2003 roster with the current playoff format alongside the 2020 Schedule. Here's how the playoff grid looked after Daytona Night.
--CUTLINE--
Terry Labonte(-0) Won 1 Race
Bobby Labonte(-0) Won 1 Race
Johnny Benson(-0) Won 1 Race
Rusty Wallace(-0) 0 Wins but was 35 Points above the cutline
I'll post daily the final 10 races of the playoffs starting with Darlington tommorow.
Fun Fact: There was actually 19 different winners in 26 races however 4 of those race winners wound up finishing outside the Top 30 in points. Those winners were, Jeff Green(1 Win and 31st in Points), Jeremy Mayfield(1 Win and 32nd in Points), Kenny Wallace(1 Win and 33rd in Points), and Greg Biffle(2 Wins and 36th in Points).
Fun Fact 2: Jeremy Mayfield actually entered Race 26 in the playoffs as he was 30th in points, 7 points above 31st. Unfortunately a poor performance at Daytona wound up knocking him to 32nd, effectively eliminating him from the Playoffs.
Fun Fact 3: Even though he was by far the most dominant driver in the regular season, Dale Earnhardt Jr. wouldn't get his first win until Race 23 where he'd finally get Win Number One of the season at the Daytona Road Course.
Does anyone have a link to the season montage the played during the 2003 banquet that featured the song βBring Me To Lifeβ by Evanescence? I used to have the Banquet recorded on VHS and watched that montage religiously. I lost my copy years ago and have searched the Internet time and time again for that clip.
I decided to create a schedule showing what the Cup Series might look like in 2020, had that idea come to fruition in 1995.
36 cars compete in each "division race", while 50 cars qualify for the four "combined" races (Daytona 500, Charlotte 600, California 500 (Auto Club), Brickyard 400) which pay out points for both "divisions". The "playoffs", beginning with the Bristol Night Race consist of the top 12 cars from each divisions' points standings + the "wild card" who won the most races in either conference without qualifying for the playoffs. These 25-car races become a ten-race "Chase" style playoff where all 25 cars begin with 0 points and race for the Cup.
Single-division races are 300-400 miles/laps/km while playoff races are 400-500 miles/laps/km. Sonoma double header includes one race on each layout.
The Daytona Duels are split by "division" with the top 25 in each race running the Daytona 500. The Clash consists of Pole winners from both divisions. The All Star race includes race winners from both divisions over the past calendar year. All others may race in the All Star open for a chance to compete in the main event.
