Fun Fact: Since the 1967/68 expansion, 19 teams have made their first Cup Finals appearance. Of those, only six won the Cup in their first try.
Year Team Result
1968 St. Louis Blues Lost to Montreal 4-0
1974 Philadelphia Flyers Defeated Boston 4-2
1975 Buffalo Sabres Lost to Philadelphia 4-2
1980 New York Islanders Defeated Philadelphia 4-2
1981 Minnesota North Stars Lost to NYI 4-1
1982 Vancouver Canucks Lost to NYI 4-0
1983 Edmonton Oilers Lost to NYI 4-0
1986 Calgary Flames Lost to Montreal 4-1
1991 Pittsburgh Penguins Defeated Minnesota 4-2
1993 Los Angeles Kings Lost to Montreal 4-1
1995 New Jersey Devils Defeated Detroit 4-0
1996 Colorado Avalanche Defeated Florida 4-0
1996 Florida Panthers Lost to Colorado 4-0
1998 Washington Capitals Lost to Detroit 4-0
2002 Carolina Hurricanes Lost to Detroit 4-1
2003 Mighty Ducks of Anaheim Lost to New Jersey 4-3
2004 Tampa Bay Lightning Defeated Calgary 4-3
2007 Ottawa Senators Lost to Anaheim 4-1
2016 San Jose Sharks Lost to Pittsburgh 4-2
2017 Nashville Predators Lost to Pittsburgh 4-2
2018 Vegas Golden Knights Lost to Washington 4-1

Cup-winning teams highlighted in bold.

-Six teams that lost their first appearance have since won the cup in their second appearance (Edmonton in 1984, Calgary in 1989, Carolina in 2006, Anaheim in 2007, Los Angeles in 2012, Washington in 2018). Fittingly, this also goes in order of time between appearances (Edmonton: 1 season, Calgary, Carolina, and Anaheim: 3, LA: 19, Washington: 20). One team won the cup in their third try, that being the (North) Stars in 1999.

-As an extension of the prior fact, only three teams have returned to the Finals and still have yet to win the Cup; those being the Sabres (1 return trip), the Canucks (2), and the Blues (2). However, this is mostly excused in the case of the Blues due to the setup of the post-expansion league being angled towards Original Six domination, with the Blues (and their expansion brothers) being at an inherent disadvantage in terms of talent.

-Five teams have yet to return to the finals (Florida, Ottawa, San Jose, Nashville, Vegas); however, this is excused in Vegas’ case considering last season was their first appearance, and as such they couldn’t have gone back yet.

-Colorado vs Florida was the only time where two first-time cup finalists faced off.

-Ottawa and Vegas both lost to prior first-time losers in Anaheim and Washington.

-The Mighty Ducks were the only first-time loser to go a full seven games.

-The Red Wings crushed the hopes and dreams of two straight first-time finalists (Washington an

Since 1967-68, when the NHL expanded to 12 teams, all but one Stanley Cup Playoffs (1973) has featured at least one overtime series winner

The 1973 Stanley Cup Playoffs, back when the only 8 teams made it, was the only playoffs after the expansion to 12 teams where there was not at least one series that ended in overtime. So this playoffs season, it is very likely that at least one team's season will end beyond regulation in heartbreak.
