Something to read upon, football from the other ages - I'll do a series if this is interesting. :)

In the 1920's, the Balkans were recovering from the Great War, nations were suddenly formed, independence was gained and many other national / political movements took place within this eastern part of Europe. In order to stimulate relationships between various countries & neighbours, the Balkan Cup was created, a football tournament between countries from the Balkans. In this first edition in 1929, 4 countries signed up on the dotted line to participate - Romania / Yugoslavia / Greece / Bulgaria. Politics were definitely considered, especially because Yugoslavia and Romania already have a Friendship Cup between them.

Now keep in mind football back then was not very popular in the Balkans - only the English were really onto it. The World Cup started only in 1930, so this was something relatively new for the area. Nevertheless, it proved a popular matchup, with huge crowds (for that age) gathering to watch the matches. In 1933, the match between Romania and Bulgaria drew 25.000 spectators on the ONEF Stadium in Bucharest, including leading politicians and the future King of Romania.

The Balkan Cup occurred every other year up until the war (1936 was the last one before the war), with the first edition being played over the course of 2 years, revived immediately after the war in 1946 and continued up until 1980 when the final Balkan Cup was played.

With only Balkan countries competing, it's important to note that the tournament was not only just a novelty of the era but also an important political event, creating even some newspaper / public opinion drama in Romania in 1933 due to a leading politician disagreeing with such football tournaments that might offend political allies.

Nevertheless, footballing wise, it marked a showcasing of both Romania and Hungary as local footballing powers (Romania before the war, Hungary after), but also provided a good practice tournament for countries after the 1960's when the World Cup became an important global event for all countries involved. Furthermore, at least for Romania and Yugoslavia, the Balkan Cup provided perfect training opportunities for the upcoming 1930 World Cup in Uruguay which they were slated to participate it.

(Fun fact - Romania's team travelled to the World Cup with Jules Rimet, FIFA President, carrying the World Cup in a briefcase with him!)

The Balkan Cup Football Championship has been a proud symbol of friendship between the Balkan nations ever since the first tournament, in 1929, was won by the outstanding Romanian team. I was a much younger man then, but I still smile whenever I remember attending the first game of that first tournament here in Bucharest. There have been many tournaments since then, with different nations winning and losing, until the Second World War put a temporary stop to that happy tradition. I propose that the tournament be revived for this year, so that we Balkan nations can reaffirm our friendship for each other and determine which state produces that finest Football players.

As we cannot invite the Greeks for obvious reasons, I propose inviting Hungary and possibly the Soviet Union to send a team, but I wish to hear your thoughts on this matter.
