A list of puns related to "1080Β° Snowboarding"
Iβm Giles Goddard, a game dev who programmed Star Fox, 1080Β° Snowboarding, Stunt Race FX, Doshin the Giant, Steel Diver, Tank Troopers and the iconic Mario stretchy face in Mario 64. At 19 years old, I became the first foreign programmer at Nintendo in Kyoto, Japan working with living legend Shigeru Miyamoto.
Iβm the current CEO at Chuhai Labs in Kyoto, Japan working with a talented group of weirdos. We are developing and publishing tons of innovative and silly games that I am really proud of. We even have a Playdate launch title coming out!
For the last year, I have been working on a spiritual successor to 1080Β° Snowboarding for VR called Carve Snowboarding. We have poured our hearts into making it every bit as thrilling and radical as if you were actually snowboarding! Itβll be releasing very soon on the Oculus Quest and we canβt wait for you to hit the slopes!
You can find me on Twitter later but for now letβs talk games dammit!
ASK ME ANYTHING (and everything!)
(Iβll be around all weekend to answer questions and Iβll try and answer all of them.)
UPDATE: I will get to all of them ;) I've not done an AMA before and the response has been awesome so far .. thank you !!
UPDATE 2: Thanks again everyone for so many awesome questions, itβs been an absolute privilege.. itβs late here in Japan but Iβll be back tomorrow!
FINAL UPDATE: Otsukaresama! Thank you so much for all of the great questions and comments, I honestly had no idea so many people remembered the games I worked on. Itβs quite humbling :) My apologies if I didnβt get to answer your question but I can always be found on Twitter @giles
Stay safe! xx
I have a loose copy of:
Zelda Ocarina of Time (grey)
Mario Kart 64
1080 snowboarding
All have great labels and are in good condition. Will post a link to pics of them. Share any retro games you have to trade if youβre interested, Iβd love to see your list or any switch games you might have to trade. Thank you !
I am loving it. It really is the spiritual successor to 1080 Snowboarding in every way; atmosphere, course design, and most satisfyingly the difficulty and precision of how the board interacts with the snow and the shape of the hills. I'm doing things I literally used to do in 1080, steering into a mound of powder and jumping ridiculously high, digging my back foot in to carve around a rock, etc. The genius of 1080 was how it was much closer to a punishing snowboarding sim than SSX; you had absolute detailed control but the courses funneled you into perilous moments where your speed and momentum made hitting the right line really difficult. So you end up crashing and laughing or making it through a difficult spot feeling euphoric. The sense of speed and momentum is great. The 'feel' is perfect.
I wish there were more courses and obviously multiplayer would be huge but for $20 I am over the moon happy at how fun and addictive it is. Now I'd like a spiritual successor to Wave Race in VR please.
Description: A tribute to the N64βs 1080 Snowboarding game. Slide down a fun mountain course as fast as you can. Can you beat my fastest time?
Difficulty: Easy but time trial is challenging.
I'm having great trouble getting this to work. I just get flickering on the whole screen regardless of core and resolution. Any tips?
#On this day (February 28) in Nintendo history...
Mickey Mouse was released in 1984 for the Game & Watch Panorama Screen in Japan. In this action game, developed by Nintendo R&D1, Mickey Mouse is performing a baton trick in Donald's circus. Move left and right on the ball and catch all the batons as they fall, while dodging the flaming torches. Mickey gets one point for every baton catch. If there are no misses when you reach three hundred points, the game goes into Chance Time and every baton is worth two points until you get a miss.
Blast Corps was released in 1997 for the Nintendo 64 in North America. In this action/puzzle game, developed by Rare, a nuclear carrier is rolling out of control and there's no way to stop it. The authorities call on the Blast Corps., a team of demolition experts, to clear a path for the carrier so it doesn't crash. In each stage you receive medals for clearing the medals that stand in the path of the nuclear carrier using the demolition vehicles available.
1080Β° Snowboarding was released in 1998 for the Nintendo 64 in Japan. In this racing game, developed by Nintendo EAD, prepare to experience the thrills and chills of the ultimate extreme sport. Whether you're sticking a Stalefish in the half pipe or a 720 Air in a raging blizzard, this Nintendo 64 classic offers one of the most accurate yet accessible snowboarding simulations around - all from the warmth of your living room!
Soma Bringer was released in 2008 for the Nintendo DS in Japan. In this action role-playing game, developed by Monolith Soft, a magical energy source known as Soma keeps the world running, but the natural balance has been disrupted by the arrival of the "Visitors". The organisation that regulates Soma, the Secundadeians, put together a military force, the Pharzuph, to investigate. The young but promising Welt is hand-picked to join the 7th Pharzuph Division by commanding officer Einsatz.
What are you favourite memories of these games? How do you think they hold up today? Hash it out in the comments.

Hello, I decided to try some new games I haven't played lately and one of these games was 1080 Avalanche for the Gamecube, I remember playing the original 1080 on N64 and thought it would be fun to try out.
Then I got another idea, I wanted to actually play the original 1080 because I remember having a lot of fun with it when I was a kid, to my surprise, 1080 is a virtual console title for the Wii, so I installed it on my Wii and when I booted up I was surprised to hear music blaring out on the title screen as Kensuke was riding down the slope. I then enter the character select screen and hear the "Work you body" music playing and I couldn't believe what I was hearing. I remember the nice calming fireplace in a silent room as I look at the colorful statistics on each character, not knowing how to read but It looked cool. I back out again to the options and find the BGM volume slider and I guess when playing it as a kid, this was turned all the way down. I don't know if my brothers or someone turned it down, but I played through 1080 as kid not hearing any of the music the entire time.
All of my nostalgia of this game comes from the quiet and ambience of failing spins on the training course, hearing the wind blowing, the crowd cheering on Air Make, the reverberated "TEN EIGHTY" the announcer said on the title screen, and the "Too bad..." as I lay in the cold snow unconscious and retired from the race. It's very liminal and a bit surreal playing it now with no music, and honestly, I don't know if I could play it with the music anymore.
TL;DR: The BGM volume was turned all the way down in 1080 during my childhood. I never knew there was music until installing the VC on my Wii.
