A list of puns related to "Yooper"
Iβve travelled a lot in the US and people look at their phones driving everywhere, but Iβve never seen more of it than in the the Upper Peninsula, even through intersections. I am from here so I feel okay saying the dumbest drivers Iβve been around are up here. Craziest in California. Dumbest in the UP. Iβve got a little kid and am tired of seeing people staring down into their crotch (thatβs what it looks like and it makes you look even dumber) and almost getting hit. I think itβs illegal in Michigan but I donβt think enforced. Be a safe sociopath: put the fucking binky down and check Instagram at the family dinner table like everyone else.
So I decided to randomly check out this comeback (here's the MV) and lo and behold, here I am, writing an appreciation post.
First the song is so catchy, the chorus has been stuck in my head since Iβve first heard it (and yes, Iβve been listening to it on repeat for hours). It just puts me in a good mood. A βserotonine boostβ if you will. Apparently, Iβm not tired of the retro sound!
The concept is basically low-cost super hero / Sailor Moon (Iβm not the only one seeing the reference in the poses at the beginning with the moon behind?) who always say βyesβ when needed, hence the βYuppersβ (I think, trying to make sense of it).
Side note: apparently, there is some Starship/Pepsi partnership that explains the product placement in the MV ? Iβll accept it by pretending itβs part of the ridiculousness, like the obvious green screen !
The lyrics (hereβs a "performance" video with closed captions in English): they make sense and are consistent with the concept. Also, if you quote around the βSuper Yoopersβ, they could be understood more generally as saying I will be here for you no matter what, for example: βBeyond the universe, across the ocean, Iβll come to youβ, βWhen youβre broken-hearted, Iβll lend my shoulders, donβt feel pressured, lean on me.β
The choreography: here is another "performance" video, with almost fixed cam, to better appreciate it. Itβs super cute and goes so well with the song. That airplane dance move is the best!
The girls (Luda, Yeoreum, Soobin, Dayoung): They really commit ! I donβt think I would be able to pull it off, I would be too self-conscious. Dayoung delivers the spoken parts in the absolute right tone, Iβm not sure how to describe it, pseudo serious and earnest with a hint of tongue-in-cheek.
Seeing the reactions on the main Kpop sub, it has been well received ! But in case some may have missed it and want a dose of fun and cute, this is my attempt to share it π.
I was leaving class today and found a car that had a Northern Michigan University and Great Lakes sticker as well as a Northern Arizona University sticker. If youβre on here from the UP Iβd like to talk!
I'm researching urban legends and folk lore based in the U.P. I am already familiar with dogman and bigfoot. Anyone got any good Yooper stories?
Dear Mom & Dad,
Yesterday the police came asking to speak to the woman called BC. I personally didn't speak with them, I was too spooked. You may not have connected the dots, but I hate confrontation. When I get super anxious or emotional, I lose my ability to speak. I have discovered that this is called selective mutism. It's a reminder and wonderful gift you have given me. The ability to lose my voice when my voice matters the most. They spoke with D.
The police said you had contacted them about a month earlier to report BC as a runaway. A runaway who ran away from home at the age of 25. The police said, that they informed you someone who is 25 cannot runaway from home as they are an adult, and are legally allowed to move away. I know this must have frustrated you. What will frustrated you more is to know they are putting in BC's legal file that I do not want to have contact from you. I do apologize for the frustration, but I have made it quite clear that I do not want to be contacted. I even sent a goodbye letter to you without a return address and purposely had it mailed in a different state far away from mine.
I moved on Mother's day. I called Mom that night. Do you remember? She told me, "You made your bed you little whore! Now you LAY IN IT." All I wanted was to wish her a Happy Mother's day. I knew it was late over there, but with moving cross country that day (without you knowing) took the majority of the day from me. But I knew how important it was to call your mom on mother's day at the very least. I haven't wanted to speak with her directly since.
Within 4 months of living out here, I learned how to drive. I actually got my dream car and my license on the same day. I was so excited. I wanted to share, I wanted to call you. I wanted to hear the words from either of you, "I'm proud of you." for the first time in my life. Instead I got, "Why did you do that for? You're just going to kill someone.". I'm not sure why I called when I knew in my gut, you weren't going to be nice. I guess, it's my innocence and hope that you will change.
Right after Christmas I took M to the vet. My newest baby boy. I was told he was going septic, he hadn't eaten at 2 days at that point. And he had lost a lot of weight. Once upon a time he weighed almost 12 lbs, he is now down to 7lbs. He is struggling to hold onto life. I am doing everything I can. I wanted to call you, to tell you, your grandpup may not make it to the New Year. But I knew in my heart, you w
... keep reading on reddit β‘Hell, troll here. My best friend is getting married next year and I am her maid of honor. Her Bachelorette party is going to be at the end of September 2022. (Long time from now, I know.) Regardless, Iβm looking for some ideas. She lives in Pelkie so we will likely go to Houghton or Marquette for her party and stay in a hotel or airbnb. Any suggestions on a nice bar? Or a hotel with a bar? Any other random ideas are welcome as well.
Hey guys!
Just wondering if anyone knows of anyone local looking to take on art commissions. Iβm looking for someone to help with illustrations for my upcoming book.
Thanks for the help!
Edit: basically, what Iβm looking for is for the illustrations to look like a Pink Floyd music video lol Edit 2, Electric Boogaloo: the book, which is more of a short story is based off a trippy dream I had a while ago. I donβt know what to categorize it as but itβs not a childrenβs book
Let's look back at some memorable moments and interesting insights from last year.
Your top 10 posts:
Any other central time yoopers wish they were on eastern time? The thought of those 4pm sunsets in December are already wearing on me. The worst last year was 4:09pm (for Kingsford). I sure wish we could just make that 5:09pm.
Planning a trip to the upper peninsula for four days. Would love to do some day hikes and see some old industrial history (and forts too if theyβre nearby). Iβm from the east coast so I barely know Michigan let alone the UP. Weβre gonna go to mackinac island and then go up over the bridge.
I definitely want to make it to Pictured Rocks; I would also like see one of Sault Ste Marie or Marquette (or both, potentially) for some industrial history. I also donβt wanna spend half the vacation driving, though, so I probably wonβt make it further west than Marquette. Any recommendations on things to see, hidden gems, things to skip (is Sault Ste Marie a nice town?)
Thanks!
Just got the shipping notification. I had been part of the mid to late 2021 crowd. Signed up in Feb.
