A list of puns related to "Wahhabism"
Are they common, uncommon or non existent in your countries? Here in Bosnia we call them Vehabije and they didnβt exist here before the 90s war.
In the discourse about the antecedents of Islamic extremism, mention of the Kadizadelis is surprisingly rare. The movement was the brainchild of the eponymous Kadizade Mehmed (1582-1635) and was staunchly opposed to Sufism and the veneration of shrines, both of which are core aspects of modern Wahhabism and other movements (such as Deobandism) inspired by it. Kadizadeli influence over the Ottoman court lasted until around 1680. The Wahhabi movement emerged in Arabia in 1744. Was there any link between the two? Or were they unrelated developments?
I know what it is, but everyone seems to have a slight different opinion of it.
The actual definition of Wahhabism is someone who follows the beliefs of Muhammad Ibn Abdul Wahab and his rebellion against the Ottoman state in 1747 when he established the Emirate of Dirriya
This is the actual definition, and we are talking about the 1747 establishment of his Emirate, not the WW1 (1917) Saudi rebellion against the Ottomans. Muhammad ibn Abdul Wahab had been dead for over 150 years by then...
So Iβve read many reports of the talibanβs apparently illogical decisions with regards to women. Such as banning being able to work or banning of public hamams for women.
Also things like in saudi women not being allowed to drive are a lessor example but also seem illogical.
I get that all theologies have extreme interpretations for example in Christianity you have puritans or extreme anti abortion stances based on biblical teachings. Or orthodox Judaism taking not working to an extreme on a Sunday
Can someone explain why these practices against womenβs autonomy have a justification in isalam?
Assalamu alaykum,
I've always asked myself, like whenever I see a convert story on YouTube or anywhere like that (that type of media), it's usually the converts story that involve people that I might suspect getting drawn towards Salafist/Wahhabist ideas, for instance, converts all of a sudden starting to grow massive bears with no mustache, wearing short pants, having their spouses/girlfriends wear 'abayah' and stuff like that?
Happens pretty often. To me it seems like instead of focusing on the very virtues and beauty of Islam, worshipping God and loving God's creation, the egalitarianism, the justice for all, respect for all; it seems that for those people, some sort of 'visual' or 'symbolic' cult is more appealing?
Those people change their live altogether almost instantly, and a lot of those changes are very superficial in nature.
Not so long ago, I heard from my wife's grandma (my wife is a Catholic), but her family knows I'm Muslim, and her grandma goes 'Oh, my nephews son has recently become a muslim, like a month ago, and we visited them, and his wife is wearing 'abayah' (type of gown that they wear in the Gulf countries such as Saudi as far as I know) and they removed all pictures from the house etc etc'. I'm like 'hmmmm where did that guy get those ideas from even?'. I mean I know where he got them from, but why? And those people are Americans of Mexican descent, who have nothing to do with 'abayahs' and stuff like that. I mean, it's crazy. It has absolutely nothing to do with Islam. Converted a month ago, and trying to live like they do in Saudi Arabia, that is utter nonsense.
Now a questions, what can we do to sort of sway the converts out of that Islam and towards proper ideas of Islam? Maybe should we create 'dawah corners' for introducing people to ideas of Progressive Islam? What can be done?
I'm sorry, I'm ranting here, I might not have expressed myself very clearly, but I think you know what I'm talking about.
How the rule is worded:
Their affiliates include, but aren't limited to, Al-Qaeda, ISIS, Boko Haram, Taliban, Al-Shabab,Tabligh Jamaat, Muslim Brotherhood, Hizb-ut-Tahrir, Jamaat-e-Islami, Jamiat ulema-e-Islam, jamiat ulema-e-hind, Hamas, Hezbollah, Lakshar-e-Taiba, tehreek-e-labbaik, and Jaish-e-Mohammad.
Discussion:
We are, at heart and as the name suggests, a community of progressively-minded Muslims. With that in mind, any attempt to advance the philosophies of these extremist theological movements would be completely at odds with the values our progressive community would want to promote.
It is pretty well established that the Saudi government has been spreading Wahhabi Islam and sponsoring Islamist groups on the global stage for decades. When exactly and for what reason did they decide to pursue that costly and controversial policy? To what extent are they responsible for the upsurge in Islamic extremism recorded since the '80s and for the very existence of jihadist organizations such as the Taliban, al-Qaeda or ISIS?
Hello! Iβm currently in the process of writing a history research paper on Muhammad bin Abd al Wahhab and the origins of what is now popularly known as Wahhabism. Im a non Muslim and was hoping to find some insight on this sub. My goal is to be as un-opinionated as possible and focus on the history. I would really appreciate any suggestions of possible scholars from the early modern period that could be helpful resources on the topic. I understand that this particular branch is rather controversial and not representative of most Muslims, but any and all insight would be greatly appreciated.
As-salamu alaykum
EDIT: Iβm really enjoying reading all of your comments. Itβs helping me get a frame of mind on how and what I should approach in my paper. Please keep the discussion and arguments going haha!
Have u guys also noticed how incel types on the internet are drawn to highly conservative forms of islam, such as Salafism. The emphasis on gender roles, female submission, as well as many other factors draws them in. They donβt have any normal means to be misogynistic so they use Islam as a means to do so
In Pakistan, Hindu teen got brutally raped and murdered by Muslims. Pak army declared no rape and burnt the body at midnight. They didnβt even allow the family to see their daughter for the last time. Now, the Army isolated the victimβs house. Media is barred to talked to the family. Media is anyway sold out. Some high ranked govt officials came to threaten the family. Latest visual is showing the family of Muslim rapists are sitting in front of her house with Pak Army and threatening them. It is possible that theyβd soon do another round on the family. Should not such country be nuked?
I know Wahhabism is the national ideology of Saudi Arabia, and it is an evangelical ideology with influence all over the world. It is a revivalist school of reactionary Islam, and yet it is somehow fundamentally opposed to the revivalist school of reactionary Islam called "Islamism."
I know both of them are minorities within the overall community who influence everyone else and kinda drown out the majority. I would just like more info about them and all their bs. Thanks in advance! Keep your masks on.
