I'm no math genius, But I know that the math on drawing from a 39 card deck and a 40 card deck is a huge difference witch is what Upstart basically does, so why is it not used all the time?
I only have one share I bought at roughly $43. It’s definitely been fun watching this stock rise over the last year or so and I was sure tempted to sell around its peak but I’ve had a long view on the company since hearing about it.
Since it’s settled down lately, (roughly $109 as of today) would this seem like a good window to add to a position?
I’m not looking for someone to tell me what to do, more just looking for general discussion because I feel like most resources I find feel artificial and have their own motive. I just want to know what other investors like myself think. As I’ve said I’m bullish but I’ve also only been investing for about 2 years so I’m sure there’s a lot I don’t know when I’m coming to that conclusion.
EDIT: I’m just about as new to Reddit as I am to investing and the bot scared me about my post being low effort to not having enough DD. Like some have already said I do think it’s priced higher than other companies in that sector which I believe is in part to the retail investing trend and UPST using AI which I think anything tech related excites people, especially those type of investors. Potentially those peaks just being due to hope for some insane breakout and realistically falling somewhere in the middle of where it was and where it is now. Even though it’s priced higher I do think potentially disrupting the loan industry could be positive for the masses and deserve a higher valuation than existing business models in that sector. Amazon, Netflix, Tesla, Microsoft all have made moves to try and disrupt their industries and they have seemingly paid off. I’m not trying to say Upstart will blow up to that magnitude but it could be a push in a better direction. I’ll just end this by saying if I didn’t include enough stats in this my bad, I’ve buried my nose in numbers and articles about this and just came here for a more laid back, human discussion about the topic.

Does anybody else get bad vibes that the gang does Upstart ads? I know they don't choose their own sponsors personally and that it comes from above, but personal loan companies, as opposed to getting a personal loan from a bank, are generally pretty predatory, and for a channel (and network of channels if we're talking RT) whose majority demographic age I imagine skews mid/late 20s and younger, to be advertising this sort of thing feels irresponsible from a group that otherwise I would say I trust and are good faith human beings.
I know other big content creators have had drama among their fanbases not approving them pushing Upstart, so this isn't necessarily a new conversation online, but it still feels gross. Like even if everything is perfectly legal, how does a personal loan with an average APR of ~19% and a maximum APR of ~36% not seem inherently predatory? Also, they advertise themselves as bad credit loaners but generally seem to only offer rates to people with a ~600 FICO or above, hardly the worst score in the world. However, a score like this from somebody they advertise as their target audience will likely get you an APR of ~25%, much higher than their advertised average. While I'm not claiming they're lying about their averages, it is misleading when that will likely not be the APR for the bad credit borrowers they advertise themselves as targeting. Additionally, while they advertise a soft inquiry into your credit history in the pre-approval process which will not affect your credit, the actual final approval requires a hard inquiry and likely can differ in result than you pre-approval (according to multiple Better Business Bureau complaints)
Additionally, while it's easy to say "just don't fall for it," it's never that simple. A service like this is targeted towards people who likely have little financial literacy, whether that be to education or age, as well as people who may already have a history of poor spending and simply do not have the judgement to look into something like this. Businesses like Upstart rely on these people defaulting, being kept in cyclical debt. Again, the existence of Upstart (or similar businesses) isn't an issue inherently, but the way in which they advertise themselves and who they market themselves to is what is concerning.

The decline in the price has been truly spectactular. Down 65% in just a few weeks time! While every growth stock is taking a huge beating right now, Upstart has been in a league of its own, and I have to think this is driven in large part by massive insider dumping. An Upstart board member from Third Point stepped down a couple weeks ago (don't know the reason)....who knows if there was a disagreement and Third Point is liquidating its entire gigantic position as a result. Very unfortunate for shareholders who bought a few weeks ago. I'm one of them. Hope you all are hanging in there.
