Hey, r/math. So I took a linear algebra course expecting to see this topics (having taken a proof based course on linear algebra up to diagonalisation) but sadly, reading the syllabus, I realised we'll only cover Cayley-Hamilton and canonical forms.

How do you construct the modular exponentiation unitary operation in Shor's algorithm?

I'm trying to follow the explanation of Shor's algorithm on Wikipedia. I'm stuck on this one step.

U_f |x, 0q > = |x,f(x)> where f(x) = ax mod N (for some classically determined a and N).

I understand that you initialise all your qubits in state |0>. Then perform a hadamard transform on all of them. This makes sense, now each qubit is equally likely to be measured |0> or |1> so you have encoded all values up to 2N -1 in an independent superposition. You then want to biject x->f(x), mapping all those values to your modular exponentiation function f(x).

How does one perform U_f? From the diagram on wikipedia, it looks like you perform a C(U) operation between the most significant (qu)bit and every other bit.

As a concrete question then:

C(U) = ((1,0,0,0), (0,1,0,0), (0,0,u00, u01), (0,0,u10, u11)). What are the values of each of u00, u01, u10, u11 for each qubit?

And then you perform a Quantum Fourier transform a measure each qubit and do something classical with the result, which isn't trivial but still just cog turning.

For some background, I finished my degree a few years ago and then left physics behind but still have an amateur interest. (I think this might help with pitching a response at the right level?)

Why (some) particles have mass and spin

There is a really cool application of representation theory to physics which philosophically explains where mass and spin come from (in a sense at least). Let me try to explain this from the ground up to maybe incentivize more people to learn about physics -- there's some really good math in there!

To begin, in special relativity one equips space-time R^4 with a different inner product than usual: g(v, w) = v^0 w^0 - v^1 w^1 - v^2 w^2 - v^3 w^3 (the upper indices refer to the components of the vectors, as is customary in physic). To briefly see why, consider that g(v, v) = 0 if and only if (v^0)^2 = (v^1)^2 + (v^2)^2 + (v^3)^2, which if you think of this as a velocity vector means you're dealing with something that 'moves as much in time as it does in space', i.e. light (using c = 1). It's possible to push this logic further to show that all observers agree on this inner product. That is to say that the allowable changes of coordinates in R^4 are those which preserve this metric. The ones fixing the origin are automatically linear and form the Lorentz group O(1, 3), whose connected component of the identity is SO+(1,3) (the Lorentz transformations that preserve both time and space orientations). If you also allow translations of spacetime you get the Poincarรฉ group (with connected component of the identity) R^4 |x SO+(1,3) (this is my shitty ASCII attempt at a semi-direct product sign).

Now let's bring quantum mechanics into the picture. In QM, the state of a system is described via a vector in a Hilbert space. So let's suppose we want a Hilbert space which describes the possible states of some type of elementary particle. If we want a relativistic theory, then different observers should agree on the state -- this doesn't mean they see the same state, but rather that given an element of the Poincarรฉ group, there should be a unitary transformation of this Hilbert space that maps the state one of them sees to the state the other sees. This means our Hilbert space needs to come with a unitary representation of the Poincarรฉ group! But actually, not quite -- in QM it makes no difference if you multiply your state vector by some unit complex number. What is your opinion on Unitary/ Federal/ Confederal States? Would you support your country turning into a federal state and do you think that is possible?

For the unaware, "Unitary/ Federal/ Confederal" are terms used to describe the relationship between a state and its regional subdivisions or member states.

The terms can be murky and there is plenty of grey area, but it is typically understood that what differentiates a unitary state from the other two is that in a unitary state the regional subdivisions lack independence.

In contrast, in a federation/ confederation regional subdivisions or member states are relatively independent. That means that they are able to levy their own taxes to fund some/ most of their operations, have certain legislative powers, have independent institutions( like a regional police for example), etc.

Now the difference between a federation and a confederation is that in the former the federal state has supreme authority while in the latter that is not the case for the confederal state. What this means is that member states in a confederation can leave with their own volition which cannot be done in a federation. Another thing is that in a confederation the member-states will typically send a fixed amount of delegates to the confederal state.

So in a confederation the democratic representatives of the government tend to represent the member-states individually which contrasts the common democratic unitary states where the democratic representatives of the government tend to represent the people directly.

Federal States, on the other hand, tend to do both. Germany for example, which is a federation, has two legislative houses. The Bundesrat where the regional subdivisions( known as Lรคnder) send their delegates AND the Bundestag which directly represents the people.

The most common form of government is the unitary state and all Balkan countries, except Bosnia and Herzegovina, are indeed unitary.

Examples of federations include Belgium, the US, Canada, Brazil, Russia, Switzerland(even though the official name has "confederation" in it, this because it used to be a confederation), Mexico, Argentina, Australia, and the already mentioned Germany, together with some other countries.

Confederations are the rarest of the bunch however you might already be quite familiar with one. Indeed, many people consider the EU to be a type of confederation. In this case, the Confederate government is compromised from the European council, the European Parliament, the Council of the EU, the European central banks( for the countries that are in the eurozone)...

Plaintiff and defendant are subject to the general laws of the State of Dixie. This Court has general jurisdiction over this action pursuant to the Court Rules II and III.

#Introduction

This action seeks declaratory judgment that certain provisions in the Dixie "Fair Work Ethic Act" ("FWEA"), recently passed by the Assembly and written by and signed by Governor u/Tripplyons18, are unconstitutional under multiple sections of the Dixie Constitution, both on their face and as applied.

For the first time in Southern history, the Assembly has empowered a politicized reliant agency to investigate workplaces and terminate employment contracts without an employer or employeeโ€™s assent, upon a mere allegation of workplace harassment or bullying. There is no right of appeal or of intervention. The board represents an undue and unauthorized state burden on the right to own and operate an enterprise unencumbered, and to execute employment contracts for benefit without unreasonable state interference. The manner in which the Assembly has granted investigative powers to the board also strongly implicates violations of the the Fourth Amendment and Dixie equivalent.

Though the Assembly recently adopted a new constitution that voluntarily eliminated the power of the Assembly to impose taxation, FWEA also creates a business tax to fund an expansion of paid spousal leave far beyond any other federal or state program. Mandated paid family leave is considered by the federal government and major accountancies as benefits subject to income tax treatment, to be reported by employees and employers and withheld by businesses as needed. For example, beneficiaries may withhold family leave taxes through the federal W4-V form.

You want your Auri-El/Akatosh heresy, step right over here!

This post is not for the old lorehands, you know all this stuff. This is for newbies who might not know and may be interested.

I've been noticing a lot of discussions on /r/teslore about the nature of Auri-El vs. Akatosh where posters show a dissatisfaction with the easy answer (Auri-El = Akatosh) and an interest in the recipe of what makes up the Dragon God of Time.

I've also noticed that a lot of the comments focus on the idea of Akatosh being what happens after the original, Auri-El, is changed by the Marukhati Selectives (either retroactively or from that point on). And like the responses on those threads inevitably say, there is not a lot of evidence for that and there is a whole lot of evidence against it.

But I've started to wonder, do a lot of those hungry new fans know the original Auri-El/Akatosh heresy? The heresy that people in-universe argue about largely isn't that Auri-El was split into Akatosh. It's that Auri-El the Aldmer warrior king broke/mantled the Time Dragon in the first place.

As Mannimarco puts it in Where were you when the Dragon broke, listing off those who could tell you where there were:

Memorizing word per word

0.How do you all memorize in situations that require word per word memorization for school?

For example things like, 1.Memorizing the Bill of Rights 2.Lines for a school play 3.I'm considering law school. Anyone else attorneys? How did you go through memorizing the law for your classes?

My plan for a Federal United Kingdom

This post started out as another "look at this map I made", but one thing led to another and I have somehow managed to write over 1000 words in an attempt to explain my thinking. I'll put some of the less-essential stuff in the comments to make it a bit more readable.

My proposed system of governance is split into four main layers. Below the Federation are Provinces and Autonomous Nations, under which are various types of local government, and finally local community assemblies.

Federation

>The United Kingdom is a voluntary union of four nations; England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland.

The Federal Government will operate in much the same way as at present, with the Prime Minister serving as its head and appointing the Cabinet.

A new body called the Federal Council will be established, which will serve as a forum to co-ordinate policy between the federal, national, and provincial governments. Its members will include the First and Second Ministers of each region, along with the PM, deputy PM (who will have a statutory role as minister for England), and the Secretaries of State for Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.

The Federal Parliament will continue to be bicameral, but will undergo fundamental changes in the way it operates.

  • The House of Commons will be reduced in size to 550 members, and will be elected by the Single Transferable Vote, with constituencies ranging in size from 3 to 5 members each.
  • The House of Lords will be abolished and replaced by the Senate.
    • Four-fifths of the Senate will be elected by open-list PR in each province and autonomous nation, with smaller regions being slightly over-represented (like in the German Bundesrat).
    • The remaining one-fifth will be appointed by an independent panel in order to represent various vocations and parts of society (such as sciences, arts, businesses and trades unions).
  • Senators will be elected/appointed by thirds, with 110 up at each House of Commons election.

Provinces and Autonomous Nations

>There will be 15 regional subdivisions. Three (Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland) will be known as Autonomous Nations, while the remaining 12 will be known as Provinces.

Unitary vector notation in QM?

This year I took my first course in quantum mechanics. In this course we learnt about operators and stuff. My problem is that I always noted vectors (spacial vectors, not wave vectors) as \vec{r} and unitary vectors as \hat{r}, and I really like that notation.

The problem is that we note operators as \hat{A} so it gets confusing. Any suggestions?

#Humble Beginnings, the Birth of a Movement

The Algerian Hirak Succeeds

The Hirak movement continued to intensify following the end of the Covid-19 Pandemic. The poor government response and increased repression by the Tebboune regime had brought renewed fuel that fanned the flames of Algerian popular desire for democracy. Corruption, nepotism, scandals, government repression, and further arrests led to general strikes across the country, the largest of which coming from the Kabylie region. To reassert order, the government deployed forces to the various cities and blocked major entryways to dissuade protestors from entering the city. Reminiscent of the French blockades of major Algerian cities during the war, this did little but aggravate the situation as more took to the streets demanding change.

Political activists and journalists such as Karim Tabou and Rachid Nekkaz resulted in even greater protests as the largely decentralized Hirak movement gathered outside of the prisons and demanded their release. The government, confident in their ability to outlast the protestors decided to refrain from acting and state media established a policy of ignoring the protestors and painting those arrested as โ€œdangerous terroristsโ€ and โ€œseparatistsโ€. However, this would prove to be a fatal mistake.

The protests grew to a level unseen since the original protests which ousted President Bouteflika in 2019, resulting in widespread panic among members of the Algerian Parliament with numerous token resignitions hoping to dissuade the protestors. The protestors, demanding nothing less than full political revolution were undeterred.

Chants of โ€œDawla Madaniya Mashi Askariaโ€ (We want a Civilian Government, No Military Government) were heard across the country and the Palestinian and Amazigh flags flew in defiance of the government. Fearing a revolution, the regime looked to the west for support. Unfortunately for them, the western power bloc was collapsing and few would allocate resources to save them. The United States had fractured, and France was preoccupied with reestablishing order within the European Union. The regime and the deep state that had been supported for decades had found itself alone, facing none other than the people that they had oppressed. To make matters worse, many within the very same system were seeking reform and sympathized with the protestors, recognizing the writing on the wall.

Overseer Skotit calmly walks out of the room, leaving Broont to monitor the state of the art antenna to read the ftl comms background noise and pick out the signal coming from somewhere called โ€œEarthโ€.

Broont, getting back to work, puts on the audio production device, and starts to listen closely to the filtered noise for the telltale sign of communication. The sound of erratic, yet known long and short tones interspersed with moments of silence. Listening closely, he hears the underlying hiss of the system, and tries to stay awake.

Hours later, he snaps awake as part of his mind picks up the chirps that have been ingrained in his mind since he was young, looking to the stars and the ships above. Quickly writing down what he is hearing, he then calls for the Overseer again.

Relationship between different discursive spheres in Greenblatt's "Towards a Poetics of Culture"

Hi everyone,

I'm currently taking a class on major literary theories and have been learning more about new historicism recently. I believe I have grasped the idea that there is a reciprocal relationship between history and discourse/literature and that literary texts can never be studied in isolation from their historical, political, and social contexts. However, I have some more specific questions about Greenblatt's "Towards a Poetics of Culture", in which he describes how both marxism (as represented by Jameson) and poststructuralism (as represented by Lyotard) cannot offer a full acount of capitalism and the historical relation between art and society or the relation between those discourses that are read as "artistic" and those that are read as "social/political".

>I propose that the general question addressed by Jameson and Lyotard - what is the historical relation between art and society or between one institutionally demarcated discursive practice and another? - does not lend itself to a single, theoretically satisfactory answer of the kind tha Jameson and Lyotard are trying to provide. [...] If capitalism is invoked not as a unitary demonic principle, but as a complex historical movement in a world without paradisal origins or chiliastic expectations, then an inquiry into the relation between art and society in capitalist cultures must address both the formation of the working distinction upon which Jameson remarks and the totalizing impulse upon which Lyotard remarks. For capitalism has characteristically generated neither regimes in which all discourses seem coordinated, nor regimes in which they seem radically isolated or discontinuous, but regimes in which the drive towards differentiation and the drive towards monological organization operate simultaneously, or at least oscillate so rapidly as to create the impression of simultaneity. Greenblatt, Stephen. โ€œTowards a Poetics of Culture.โ€ The Greenblatt Reader, Blackwell, 2005, pp. 18-29.

Greenblatt later talks about how "capitalism has produced a powerful and effective oscillation between the establishment of distinct discursive domains and the collapse of those domains into one another" (24). In other words, there is a constant oscillation or circulation between the separation of the political realm and the sphere of art and their subsequent conflation into one.

The revolution will not be adequately sourced- ๐Ÿดโ€โ˜ ๏ธSino fails in proving that China is a democracy.

Over on the draped halls at ๐Ÿดโ€โ˜ ๏ธSino lies this FAQ about Chinese democracy (link in the comments). At first glance, it seems convincing, but I realised that the FAQ uses poor and sources that contradict its thesis (to various degrees). Note that most of its information is outdated, so I will analyse both the sources they use and a comparison to more recent sources. So this is how they start off:

>It is a common perception that there is no democracy in China today and that it is only a republic in name. As China does not practise public elections for the National Peoples Congress and the office of the President. The general public has no direct say in who resides in the central government.

Yeah, so ๐Ÿดโ€โ˜ ๏ธSino concedes that since China does not elect its representatives. Now, the rest of the entire FAQ is mental gymnastics trying to reconcile with the facts.

Open Quantum Systems

Hello!

Does any one know when the birth of Open Quantum Systems came around? I assume it was around the time of Von Neumann (1927-1932) or something like this, but iโ€™m not entirely sure

also if anyone has any beginner texts/intuitive advice on Linblad Super Operators and non unitary time evolution (markovian vs non-markovian), that would be super helpful for a project iโ€™m currently working on.
