Some Questions on Square and Triangular Divisions and Something I don't Have Terms for...

From Wikipedia:

> The men for the divisions created by Falkenhayn had come from reducing square divisions with four infantry regiments to triangular divisions with three regiments, rather than a net increase in the number of men in the army. Troops for the extra divisions of the expansion ordered by Hindenburg and Ludendorff could be found by combing out rear-area units but most would have to be drawn from the pool of replacements, which had been depleted by the losses of 1916 and although new classes of conscripts would top up the pool, casualty replacement would become much more difficult once the pool had to maintain a larger number of divisions. By calling up the 1898 class of recruits early in November 1916, the pool was increased to 763,000 men in February 1917 but the larger army would become a wasting asset. Ernst von Wrisberg, Abteilungschef of the kaiserlicher Oberst und LandsknechtsfΓΌhrer (head of the Prussian Ministry of War section responsible for raising new units), had grave doubts about the wisdom of the increase in the expansion of the army but was overruled by Ludendorff.[8]

I'm somewhat familar with the US army's movement from square to triangular and understand how in later more mobile periods the increased amount of comand power/manowar or the smaller size under a given commander increased flexibility, I don't understand how that was as much of an issue in a non-mobile conflict. It's also very possible that I don't understand this at all.

Perhaps this is related to the way units were cycled on the front, instead of a division holding a small part of a line a cycling regiments back and forth, were entire divisions cycled back and forth? Was there actually any difference then? I don't really understand what's going on here.

I don't understand why an increased standing army would cause the draft pool to shrink faster than otherwise. My first explanation: Instead of having a larger amount of trained soldiers to fill the same "basing" requirements on the fronts etc. giving the men less time in action before rotated to rear areas, they wou

US Army and US Marine divisions

If a quick glance of Wikipedia is any indication the Army and Marines organize their divisions in different ways.

The Army divisions are formed around two or three brigade combat teams with an aviation brigade while Marine divisions are orgnaized into various independent regiments and battalions (An independent amphibian assault battalion, reconnaissance battalion, etc).

Any idea as to why is this the case?

[Java] Euler 12 - Highly divisible triangular number - First number with over 500 divisors

Here is the link to Euler 12.

The problem reads:

The sequence of triangle numbers is generated by adding the natural numbers. So the 7th triangle number would be 1 + 2 + 3 + 4 + 5 + 6 + 7 = 28. The first ten terms would be:

1, 3, 6, 10, 15, 21, 28, 36, 45, 55, ...

Let us list the factors of the first seven triangle numbers:

  • 1: 1
  • 3: 1,3
  • 6: 1,2,3,6
  • 10: 1,2,5,10
  • 15: 1,3,5,15
  • 21: 1,3,7,21
  • 28: 1,2,4,7,14,28

We can see that 28 is the first triangle number to have over five divisors. What is the value of the first triangle number to have over five hundred divisors?

Here is my current java code (it starts at the number 3 and goes to 5 million, quite slowly)

public class Euler12 {
public static void main(String[] args){

    for (long i = 3, j = 0; i <= 5000000; i++){
        j = j + i;
        long divNumber = 0;
        for (long k = 1; k <= j; k++){
            if(j % k == 0){
                divNumber++;
            }
        }

        if (divNumber > 50){
            System.out.println(j + " has " + divNumber + " divisors.");

        }
    }
}
}

I've been searching around and hearing a lot of using a sieve of Atkin algorithm, but am having a hard time understanding how to implement it. I definitely don't want a copy paste solution from someone, I just need some help understanding a sieve of Atkin and it's conversion in to code.

The Weeknd’s STARBOY Turns Five - A Retrospect on The Era.

It’s been five years since The Weeknd released Starboy! This was the first album of The Weeknd’s where he embraced the genre of Pop to another level. Merging genres and blending into various sounds, Starboy was a well executed exploration of music that helped The Weeknd enhance his image and alter any sort of stereotypes that surrounded him. The album helped Abel garner a new fanbase, one that was here for the pop sound he had to offer; all while he stayed true to his well-known image.

In this post I’ll be focusing on the era, and a little bit on the album. I believe Starboy was the one era that perfectly encapsulated who The Weeknd is, simply because of the contrast between the themes of the songs, the videos, and delivery of it all. All things considered, the era shows off different aspects of The Weeknd. And for clarity, when I say era, I mean songs, videos, and of course, the album. Of course performances, interviews, magazines shoots, etc. come into the category of an era, but with this post I hope to highlight the singles/videos for this era. Mainly because they displayed a strong contrast between each other, ultimately conveying The Weeknd’s versatility as an artist.

Various dates will be emphasized to focus on highlights from the era, again, mainly the releases of singles/videos. I will discuss the album at the end though, specifically attempting to pinpoint why such a successful era’s album is seen as a weak point in The Weeknd’s discography. I don’t want to come off as if I’m too critical of the album. It’s no secret that the album isn’t Abel’s strongest piece of work, but that doesn’t mean that it wasn’t massively successful or enjoyable. And I want to assure that I’m not against the album. It was the first album Abel released after I joined the XO fandom and back then I was like β€œthis is the best album ever!! Why are the other fans wildin??” Overtime, I understood the criticism, but as time has past many fans of The Weeknd have came around on Starboy and now appreciate the album. But again, I will discuss why it doesn’t stand out. And if this is your favourite album of his, I sincerely hope that I don’t come off as if I’m trying to put you in the worst mood, ah.

The era went from September 2016 to June 2017. I won’t highlight performances, but I do have a small section for them. And I won’t mention Marvel’s Starboy comic book, even th

SERIOUS: This subreddit needs to understand what a "dad joke" really means.

I don't want to step on anybody's toes here, but the amount of non-dad jokes here in this subreddit really annoys me. First of all, dad jokes CAN be NSFW, it clearly says so in the sub rules. Secondly, it doesn't automatically make it a dad joke if it's from a conversation between you and your child. Most importantly, the jokes that your CHILDREN tell YOU are not dad jokes. The point of a dad joke is that it's so cheesy only a dad who's trying to be funny would make such a joke. That's it. They are stupid plays on words, lame puns and so on. There has to be a clever pun or wordplay for it to be considered a dad joke.

Again, to all the fellow dads, I apologise if I'm sounding too harsh. But I just needed to get it off my chest.

What is a triangle and square organisation?

I've been reading Battletech fanfiction lately and something that comes up when talking about certain nation armed forces is how they're organised as squares or triangles.

Is this a real thing and what does it entail? Is one better than the other?

Also are there examples of it existing in modern militaries? Discussion on this sub seems to show a modern military organisations that are more ad-hoc, being able to switch in and out platoons/units with other units.

"When I was born, FTL travel was a pipe dream. WE were what were scientific triumphs. Now FTL is commonplace, our friends are gone, and our return is a scientific triumph.

"The more things change, you know?" - CPL Telli Brubaker-3BGL8YL27, canis lupus nobilis.

Vuxten's intercom beeped.

"Go ahead," Vuxten said, tapping the button.

"Three to see you, sir," PFC Yelretit said from his desk in the Orderly Room. "They're from 193rd Special Troops."

"Send them in," Vuxten said, saving and closing the file he was working on. Before the three spaced knocks rattled the door he had his desk looking good.

"Enter," Vuxten called out.

The door opened and Vuxten stared at the three that entered.

Two were tall, black and brown patterning on their muzzles, heads, and necks. Those two had upright triangular ears and long muzzles. The other one was shorter, with whitish-yellow and dark gray fur, with longer floppy ears. They had long arms, digitigrade legs, and looked more related to Telkans than anything Vuxten had seen.

One of the taller ones stepped in front of the other two and they stopped three paces from the desk.

"Sir, Second Lieutenant Rex Fullstrike, 193rd Special Troops, with Gunnery Sergeant Spot Rightsmart and Sergeant Lucky Desperado, reporting, sir," the being said.

Vuxten returned the salute the stood up, extending his hand. "Good to meet you, gentlemen," he said. After all three of them shook his hand he waved at the seats on the side. "Take a seat."

"Thank you, sir," the Lieutenant said. All of them moved 'smartly', to use a Corps phrase. Vuxten noticed they were all carrying their hats in their left hands, sat with their backs rigid, their knees at a 90 degree angle, and put their hands on their knees, turning their heads to look at him.

"So what can I do for you?" Vuxten asked.

The Lieutenant gave a frown. "You weren't informed, sir?"

"No, Lieutenant, I was not. Can you elaborate?" Vuxten said.

That Time I Screwed Up a Night Exercise Out of Boredom

This was back in 1977 or so when I was an E-3 in our company's weapons platoon at Ft. Lewis, WA, 9th Infantry Division. It was during the summer, and our infantry company was holding a night training exercise out in the bushes of Ft. Lewis. This only involved the line platoons, and the weapons platoon was not involved, but for some reason the First Sergeant tapped my platoon sergeant to help keep him from getting lonely at the company TOC. And because I was the platoon leader's driver, my platoon sergeant tapped me to drive him out there. Great. Just what I wanted to do. And just to keep it real, he made me sign out my weapon with BFA and a magazine of blanks. So I would have to clean the darned thing when I got back, apparently. I wasn't involved in the exercise, and I have no idea why he couldn't have driven the jeep himself.

There was a radio to monitor the platoons, but the Old Man's RTO manned that, so once the TOC tent was set up, my job was to sit there and be bored. We had gotten there towards evening while it was still light, with the night attacks to kick off around 2 am or so. The three line platoons were set up in a triangle, about 500 meters from each other. 1st platoon was to attack 2nd platoon, 2nd platoon was to attack 3rd platoon, and 3rd platoon was to attack 1st platoon. Two squads from each platoon would attack and one squad of each was to defend. The point of the exercise was to practice night attack techniques. It was overcast, so no moonlight. Pitch dark.

So the First Sergeant and my platoon sergeant just sat there in the light of the Coleman lamp and shot the breeze. For hours. I was rather ticked off about the injustice of it all, but then it occurred to me that I could have a little fun. After announcing my intention to get some sleep, as 2 am approached, I headed off towards where I knew one of the platoons were sitting. As I approached a particular road junction a couple hundred meters from the TOC, I saw (or rather heard) that they were actually using the road as an assembly area. So I went down the road a little bit towards them, and still only hearing them, I let off a burst of blanks at full auto. Immediately I ran back towards the junction, which had a raised triangular patch of grass and brush about fifteen feet in diameter, and a couple of feet higher than the road, around which the road ran, and plonked myself in the middle of it.

Pandemonium ensued, and they apparently thought their attacking platoon had jumped the g

Whatever horror stalks thy dream, and shattered vision clouds thy day, reach not into the well of darkness for solace. Rage against the dying light, seek the hand of hope. Do not go quietly into that final night.

The Creed of the Silent Warrior ~ Pre-Glassing, Author Unknown

"It was a small thing, that the Mad Lemurs of Terra passed to each of us who met them. A small spark, a fluttering fragile thing. It was a tiny thing that quickly grew into a conflagration with the smallest tinder. That grew into a raging inferno that consumed whole species and filled the mind and ignited the dormant vestigial soul of my people.

"A scream of 'We will not yield!' shrieked in the face of a malevolent universe.

"The universe, it seemed, just smiled as it set about forging its weapon in the forges of wrath, on the anvils of hate, with the hammers of rage." - Former Grand Most High Sma'akamo'o, from I Have Ridden the Hasslehoff

Vuxten sat nervously on the couch. His hand itched strangely and he kept reaching down to touch a pistol that wasn't at his belt, reaching across his lap to touch the hilt of a chainsword that was locked in the armory, opening his mouth to try to crack a joke to 471 before remembering that the little greenie was surfing on the coast.

He'd gotten a picture of a dozen russet mantids in a pyramid, the bottom five of them on water-skis, the rest of the shoulders of the ones below. Another picture of the mantids roasting a turkey over a fire pit in the sand.

Part of Vuxten wished he'd gone along with the mantids.

Or rented a big pink car.

Or rented a Chrysler ground car the size of a whale.

Or gone with Casey and Peel to go rock climbing.

Or... anything else.

Vuxten rubbed his hands on his pants, seeing the sweat glimmer for a moment. His pawpads made a rasping sound and one of his nails scraped slightly, but it was still better than the feel of thick sweat between the pads.

Synthal'la leaned over and put her head on his shoulder. "is all right"

"I know," Vuxten said, rubbing the side of his head against hers. "Just nervous."

Part II - CHAPTER 18 - The Devilfish

FOR SOME DAYS the Nautilus kept veering away from the American coast. It obviously didn’t want to frequent the waves of the Gulf of Mexico or the Caribbean Sea. Yet there was no shortage of water under its keel, since the average depth of these seas is 1,800 meters; but these waterways, strewn with islands and plowed by steamers, probably didn’t agree with Captain Nemo.

On April 16 we raised Martinique and Guadalupe from a distance of about thirty miles. For one instant I could see their lofty peaks.

The Canadian was quite disheartened, having counted on putting his plans into execution in the gulf, either by reaching shore or by pulling alongside one of the many boats plying a coastal trade from one island to another. An escape attempt would have been quite feasible, assuming Ned Land managed to seize the skiff without the captain’s knowledge. But in midocean it was unthinkable.

The Canadian, Conseil, and I had a pretty long conversation on this subject. For six months we had been prisoners aboard the Nautilus. We had fared 17,000 leagues, and as Ned Land put it, there was no end in sight. So he made me a proposition I hadn’t anticipated. We were to ask Captain Nemo this question straight out: did the captain mean to keep us on board his vessel permanently?

This measure was distasteful to me. To my mind it would lead nowhere. We could hope for nothing from the Nautilus’s commander but could depend only on ourselves. Besides, for some time now the man had been gloomier, more withdrawn, less sociable. He seemed to be avoiding me. I encountered him only at rare intervals. He used to take pleasure in explaining the underwater wonders to me; now he left me to my research and no longer entered the lounge.

What changes had come over him? From what cause? I had no reason to blame myself. Was our presence on board perhaps a burden to him? Even so, I cherished no hopes that the man would set us free.

So I begged Ned to let me think about it before taking action. If this measure proved fruitless, it could arouse the captain’s suspicions, make our circumstances even more arduous, and jeopardize the Canadian’s plans. I might add that I could hardly use our state of health as an argument. Except for that grueling ordeal under the Ice Bank at the South Pole, we had never felt better, neither Ned, Conseil, nor I. The nutritious food, life-giving air, regular routine, and uniform temperature kept illness at bay; and for a man who didn’t miss his past existence on la

An Attempt To Translate Case Files, Part 1 of Chapter 1, Book 6

Spoilers for the earlier Case Files books, obviously

Hi! This is a fan-translated chapter 1 of the Contract of Atlas (Upper) from the light novel series The Case Files of Lord El-Melloi II. All the important stuff has been said in my last post (where I translated the prologue). I don’t own any of the rights to this work, this is just a translation. The translation quality isn’t great, but I hope you enjoy!

  • (We left off last time on Gray asking Reines to tell her about how she and Lord El-Melloi II met. Also Reines POV yayyyyy. I might change some of Reines’ speech styles? Because I recently re-read the storyline of the FGO Case Files event, and she doesn’t sound at all that proper.

  • And also, I write in American English, but this book is set in and narrated by British people. Apologies if that’s weird.

  • There’s a lecture in this one… help… but this one’s actually okay I guess

  • And Reines, you are really just like Melvin in the sense that you’re a pretty decent younger sister, and a pretty horrible one at the same time.)

Chapter 1, Part 1:

This photo does not become relevant until Part 2. But it's the chapter header so I added it anyway. Expect to see it again. Also, I have not looked at this photo properly before. Now that I have, I realized how terrifying it looks.

It was early summer. Though I said that, London was actually pretty cool in the summer.

After all, the highest temperature hardly ever went above twenty-five degrees (77Β°F).
