Is there a Metallica song that you don’t enjoy the studio recording version of but absolutely love the live version? For me it’s The Memory Remains. The studio version of that song sounds so commercial, but whenever the band performs it, it’s absolutely mesmerizing. Cant get enough

My band loves to book shows. I do not. I prefer jamming in-studio, writing, recording. Anyone else in a similar position?

I joined my current project to make new friends after a move to a new city. And that I've done. Getting together weekly with these dudes is a major highlight. I love jamming, recording, arranging. We have a great creative culture, and now they are my closest friends in town.

Lately, some of the members have been pushing gigs. Hard. Booking us for any random thing, anywhere in town, desperate to get in front of a crowd. They love the limelight.

After doing a few shows, I'm coming to a perhaps unexpected realization as a musician - I do not enjoy playing shows. I think I may actually hate it. It doesn't feel good to take my favorite creative activity and turn it in to a spectacle for others. Music for me is social and intimate, I don't want an 'audience' or 'fans'.

Then there's the hassle. I play a big organ/keys rig, so every time we get a booking, it involves tearing apart the whole rig and wiring, shoving it all in the car, driving to a show, setting it all up again, sacrificing a whole evening, usually a Friday/Saturday, and doing it all over again to get the rig home. It sends my stress through the roof.

I know the answer is simple; participate in projects that align with your goals. But I love these friends, and I love playing music with them. I just don't want to play shows. Curious if anyone else in the community has had a similar experience, and had any insights to share?

Home Studio Recording Set Up Recommendations vs. Construction Sounds?

I have an issue with construction noise (low pitch motors and high pitch clangs/beeps) near my recording room which shares a wall and window with the outdoors. I have some 2" foam ridge panels that I will set up soon but I feel this will almost definitely not be enough. Do you have any recommendations for good budget bass traps / isolation shields / diffusers? I have a foam cover on my microphone and also a little pop shield in front also, but maybe there's something I can put very close to the microphone as well? I am looking to record vocals with this mic.

TLDR: bass trap / isolation shield / diffuser / mic cover budget options for recording vocals vs. construction noises outside home studio?

Which is more important to you: studio recordings or live performances? Why?

It’s important for an artist to be good at both. But if you had to pick, which one?

I’d go with studio recordings. Part of this is because I’ve gotten used to it as a Mariah Carey fan. She’s a self-proclaimed studio rat. Since her debut album she’s been making songs that are difficult for her to sing live.

That aside, I’ve always been more interested in studio recordings. I can get lost in the intricacies of a song with its instrumentation or background vocals easier when it’s a recording rather than live. I’ve also just always been of the impression that an artists songs will outlive their performances, so I focus most my energy there.
