A list of puns related to "Strop"
So I have a leather strop I bought cheap but its virgin (smooth textured) and no compound. For some reason where I live I cant find strop leather compound. Any idea on how to use the strop without the compound or any replacement?
PSA: You should really try a straight razor if you haven't, they're more intuitive than you think and easier on the skin than any brand of blades. Amazon has a crazy price (10 bucks!) on a perfectly serviceable strop right now: https://www.amazon.ca/Fromm-Razor-Strop-2.../dp/B001DYK6Y2
Never thought it would make such a difference to give back that razor edge to an already sharp knife. Itβs easy and cost almost nothing. I now give it a few swipe every time I switch blade in the morning.

I want to get my brother a strop for his birthday, for his favourite knife.
Right now when he sharpens it he uses a King 1000/6000 whetstone (and can get it quite sharp).
Any suggestions on what type/brand of Strop to get?
Based in Australia if that helps.
I tried to research this online but I'm getting very confused with the different types. From what I can see, a green one is best?
I just picked up several Wusthof Epicure knives and now I am learning about proper knife care. I picked up a strop with Micron diamond spray 1 & .5. I have been using it between each knife use ( I just do home cooking). I start with the 1 micron and then finish with the .5 micron.
From everything I've read this should be sufficient for keeping the blade up between sharpenings. Not sure if I need to bother getting a honing rod or not.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated thanks!
So basically my(28m) fiancΓ©e(25f) has just stormed away from the kitchen table and went into our room upstairs.
Why? Because her dinner portion was too small. For context she is on a diet as she is very depressed about her weight. I had planned a small date night with activities for us to do together and made her favourite curry from scratch, however this time instead of making the ridiculous portion size I usually do I made it for 2 people as it really should be.
I'm not really sure if I'm looking for advice here or just wanting to vent. If someone spots something I've done wrong which I can rectify then that would be appreciated. Can provide more context if necessary.
At the moment I don't feel like I've done anything wrong but I know I'll end up apologising, it's usually how these things go for me.
I'm a regular over on the shaving community and sell on shave_bazaar. I make strops for straight razors and had a *lot* of scrap left over and figured I'd give this a shot. Pretty straightforward latigo leather on pine backing, measures out to 8x3.5 (and 3/4 for the wood).
Looking to sell 'em for $20 shipped in the US -- PayPal.

Also have strops that are double sided as well, one with the smooth and other with the rough side - same dimensions as the one above - These are $26 shipped.

This coin is up 15x in a month or so, even if the arse fell out and it plummed to 0.0010 it would still be at 10x higher than a month or so ago.
This coin will not go to $1 that's just ridiculous, but 0.1c is possible, the whole Tron market is on its arse. Next few days/weeks we will be rocketing and all the posts will be about lambos and cocaine.
Stop stressing!
Put your phone down, go finger your missus and wait for this to blow over. ππ
Anyone have any experience with cheap strops from ebay etc? Are they any good?
This is for one 15"x3" large paddle strop (have two available), two sided & both sides are suede/fuzzy side up and you can select any two colors of compound you like (black/white/green/red). These are a little more than the others since they're larger overall and I also branded each side fine/coarse and inlaid a piece of copper tubing for the handle/lanyard.
Asking $45 shipped
This is for one 15"x2.5" paddle strop (have five available), two sided & both sides are suede/fuzzy side up and you can select any two colors of compound you like (black/white/green/red).
Asking $38 shipped

These are handmade from scratch in my shop. The wood is leveled, cut to size/shape and the area leather is attached to is leveled on float glass with 3m abrasive. Two coats of ebony stain are added and then three coats of clear are sprayed on (shellac). Leather is European veg tan that I split down a little thinner and then it's brushed/worked to free/soften the fibers and lastly trimmed to length after attached to wood. Splitting, working and trimming is around a 20-30 minute process for each strop, time consuming however I think this process produces much better leather for stropping with bar compounds.

Hello everyone, first post on here so I hope I'm not breaking any rules. Didn't see a stickied question thread.
I recently got a wicked edge that came with ceramic stones (1.4/0.6micron) and strops with 2 different compounds (1/0.5 micron).
Should you only stick to one honing method, or can you go: 1.4 ceramic>1.0 strop>0.6ceramic,>0.5 strop.
Would that mess up the edge or progress from the previous honing method?
Sorry for the noobie question, really trying to get this right.
Thanks!
I know this topic seams beaten to death, but more I read, the more conflicting information I see. For my old western knives I used a cheap Sharp Pebble 1000/6000 and honed before each meal prep (home cook). This was good enough for me and the knives I had.
Carbon steel is another beast all together. After extensive research I'm closer to knowing what to buy, but still not 100% certain.
1) Sharpening stone: I have read the getting started guide, knowledge base and wiki. Yes I saw the post: "The comprehensive beginner's stone buying guide" and that everything points to the Shapton Pro 1000. I thought I was going to settle on that, but then I decided on the Naniwa Pro 1000. Then again after further reading, I think I'm going for the Gesshin 2000. Thoughts?
2) High grit/finishing stone: I was considering something like the Suehiro Rika 5000 or Gesshin 6000. Should I be looking at an 8000 instead? Do I even need this stone or should I just sharpen then strop as needed?
3) Stropping: I have come to the conclusion this is a good thing. Most people here talk about leather strops, but they use a stone in the JKI video. I'm still thinking leather is the way to go, but what setup do I go for? Should I just glue some scrap leather I can get locally on to a strip of 2x4?
Thanks again in advance for your input.
(EDIT for typo)
I've been looking at straight razors as a noob, and so far I've narrowed it down to a Dovo 5/8 on TSS and a Ralf Aust 6/8 on Maggard. I know that Maggard does well with their honing, but does TSS do too, or will I need it honed too? I'm looking for something pre-honed that I can strop and start learning with. I'll be getting a honing and flattening stone for long-term use since I'm really interested in this being a long-term thing, but I don't want to set a bevel on anything.
Many times Iβve read the interweb hack that says you can extend the useful life of a replaceable 5 blade razor by stroking it on a piece of denim. Iβm a total novice when it comes to the art of sharpening, so I thought Iβd post here and get more learned insights. Thoughts?
Hello Folks, my one and only strop currently is a 2x12 paddle strop with Jende 1micron diamond film on it. Seems to work great for me. I did see however that you can get magnetic backed strips and had the though of getting a few and trying out maybe a 3 micron, 0.5 micron and 0.1 micron as well as a bare strop. I'm currently only working with non-super steels but I'd like to venture towards that soon. I already have a block of 1018 3/4"x 3" x 12 (steel) to use as a base.
Was wondering if anyone has opinions on magnetic backed strops?
I'm mulling over bass wood and such as well and would likely employ magnets on the back of the blocks.
Any comments on stropping in general are also welcome. I'm a bit over a month into this and I've sharpened maybe 40 knives to a solid level of sharpness. I'm now cutting thin magazine paper with very little to no hitching and got myself a cheap USB microscope as per one of the users suggestions.
I don't have a problem....you have a problem XD
Thanks in advance.
Today I grabbed some new calf leather and wanted to make a new leather strop.
The one I was using till now was made with lamb leather iirc, which is pretty soft.
When I layed flat the new leather and stropped my knife a bit, it felt way harder, especially the suede side. It's normal right? Maybe my strop so far wasn't doing as much work as I thought it did lol.
Also, I thinking of making a double sided strop and load the one side with green compound.
One side gonna be with smooth leather facing up, but what about the one which I am gonna load with compound?
Which side of the leather is better to load with compound?
