A list of puns related to "Statistical Ensemble"
I am a second year university student, and my exam for this module is tomorrow, so I realise this is particularly short notice, but I'm looking for last minute help to try to understand a specific part of maths relating to the statistical ensembles.
In my statistical physics module this year, we study the classical microcanonical ensemble, and the canonical ensemble and grand canonical ensemble, both of those with classical and quantum applications.
In each of these ensembles, I have particular difficulty performing the integrals necessary to find the auxiliary functions, whether that be sigma or Z (subscript N) in the microcanonical and canonical cases, and the partition function Z in the grand canonical case.
I'm essentially just looking to see if anyone can recommend any online resources like websites or videos that explain performing these integrals and how to approach it, if those resources exist. I think my lack of understanding here comes from not being taught how to do the integrals as in depth as I possibly should have been.
Many thanks in advance.
Does anyone know how one can derive the microcanonical, canonical and grand canonical ensembles using gibbs entropy?
So in my thermo class, I learned about partition functions, first on the microscopic scale. Then the professor touched upon the canonical ensemble, but didn't really talk much about it, or really derived other concepts from it. So my question is:
What is the purpose of the canonical ensemble? What can it tell us, that the microscopic analysis cannot, and why?
Note: Haven't covered the "grand canonical ensemble" yet, so try not to talk about that, if that's possible? Thanks!
In a project I'm working on, we'd like to show that certain stereotyped brain areas (represented by shapes at certain locations) are reproducible enough in terms of shape and location to be "classified".
Currently, we apply the Mann-Whitney U test separately on the distances between areas and a landmark-based area metric to each pairwise comparison (with Bonferroni correction) between all identified areas. Independently, I constructed and cross-validated an ensemble classifier that applies k-Nearest Neighbors and a convolutional network trained on the shapes; I tested the trained classifier against one on shuffled labels (the null hypothesis) as a permutation test. Of course, the construction of the Ensemble classifier was informed by priors that would elicit good performance (that shape and location were important) but so was the statistical test.
Is there a compelling reason to use one or the other irrespective of p-value/classifier performance. Is there some resource that describes a theoretical framework of how and when a classifier can/should be used in equivalent or superior capacity to a more traditional statistical test? I was able to find almost no resources on this although this comes close.
Thanks in advance.
Edit 1: Reuploaded images since they weren't processing correctly.
This is a continuation of my previous post (which can be found here), which used a web scraper to analyze the metadata of all works under the Minecraft fandom of Archive of Our Own.
Here, I will be analyzing all fics involving Dream, GeorgeNotFound, Sapnap, and/or BadBoyHalo. I included BadBoyHalo primarily to see if the statistics would differ with a content creator who has firmer boundaries than Dream, George, or Sapnap, plus BadBoyHalo has interacted extensively with the "core" trio.
Once again, I am using the ao3-api by Armindo Flores and Python to scrape work metadata from Archive of Our Own.
This post is divided into two overarching sections: a rating and warning breakdown - which is identical to the rating breakdown from my last post - and a tag breakdown.
The rating breakdown is largely the same from last time, but in light of some of the comments pointing out correctly that taking a sample of the most viewed fics will results in sampling bias, I have reworked the tag breakdown.
Whereas the last time I only took a sample of the top 800 fics by views and analyzed the tags of those 800 fics due to rate limitations, my new scraper can run overnight to extract the tag metadata of all fics.
As for any concerns that this analysis will miss variants of the characters names, AO3's tagging system allows tags to be merged when filtering or searching for them. So while a fic involving Dream may tag 'dream' or 'clay', all fics with the character tag 'dream' will show up under searches for the overarching character tag ''Clay | Dream (Video Blogging RPF)."
However, tag, character, and relationship names extracted from the fic metadata won't be merged, so various permutations of relationships and the character names will be counted separately in the breakdown.
Rating distribution of each measured fandom in %
The chart above is the rating distribution (by percentage) of 8 categories: each member of the Dream Team and four other fandoms (Harry Potter as a 'standard' fictional fandom, BTS and Men's Hockey RPF as a reference to other fandoms bas
... keep reading on reddit ➡Inspired by u/ PopeDarthPaul's post, I decided a year ago to start reviewing the many films I watch. Bit by bit, writing these short reviews, became my main creative project for 2021.
The combination of being retired, and alone, plus Corona, enabled me to happily watch an average of nearly 3 films per day, and reverted me to the old days 40 years ago, when I studied Film at the University of Copenhagen under Peter Schepelern, and learned about semiotics, history & film theories.
I enjoyed this year tremendously, and intend to continue spending (“wasting”) my time exploring old and new films alike.
Below are some statistics and a short list of a few curious finds.
I called my project “1,000 films” but ended up seeing a total of 'only' 885. Out of these, 122 were documentaries, 41 Shorts and 10 were stand-ups.
I thought of myself as an an all-round cineast, versed in world cinema, interested to discover rare gems old and new. But sadly, after looking at my end-year summery, I realized that this was not the case and I am far from a completist: Only 302 were “foreign films” and at least 198 (22%, and usually of my best-rated films) were films I had seen before, sometimes more than 2-3 times.
Of the “foreign” films, 64 were French, 43 were from the UK, 40 from Denmark, 19 each were Japanese and Italian, 13 from Germany, 10 from Sweden, 9 each from Poland & Israel, 6 each from Iran, Mexico and Norway. Others were from Argentina, Armenia, Austria, Brazil, Catalonia, Chile, Holland, Hong Kong, Hungary, Iceland, India, Korea, Lebanon, Mongolia, Romania, Spain, Turkey, Uganda, USSR and Venezuela.
Initially I was hoping to take a sizable bite out of the many films I hadn't seen before. But the field is much too vast: There are too many masterpieces in Russian, Thai, Arabic, Flemish, Mandarin, Portuguese, Swiss and what-not that I may never be able to see.
In the process, I also fell prey to “NEWS”, the 'Never-Ending Watchlist Syndrome', and ended up with a saved list of over 400 more selections waiting to be consumed.
The year was, to my surprise, also heavily populated by newer films, with 98 from 2021, 73 from 2020, a total of 406 from the last 10 years, and only 61 from before 1960. So, not much of Film-History flair either.
Of the individual directors, I was mostly taken by Anders Thomas Jensen (10 films), Agnès Varda (6), Céline Sciamma (4), A

The sharklike Edixi woman felt her tail twist from side to side in contentment as she took in the aftermath of her regiment’s most recent victory. They’d caught the Imperials completely by surprise, and now the landscape was littered with the remains of their soldiers and machines.
Were it that I didn’t have to share my victory with others, she thought, grey skinned features twisting into a scowl as she watched a pair of Roach pirates scrambling over the still smoldering hulk of an Imperial IFV in search of possible salvage.
While she could well understand the reason for it, she still couldn’t quite accept the alien’s actions. The dead deserved respect. The enemy had fought and died with honor.
…Though as another unmistakable crackle of gunfire rang out from across the battlefield, she found she envied them that fact.
She envied them the simplicity of it. They had died with an enemy before them and their allies beside. A clear-cut division between the two.
Were that my own service were so simple, she thought.
“How is the mop up proceeding?” she asked, turning to her second.
The other woman, a fellow Edixi - the same as all her fellow soldiers that had joined her in this operation - stood crisply at attention.
“It proceeds at pace,” the Major responded. “Those units that escaped the initial engagement are quickly being run down by our exos or are expected to run into our other forces who have just reported seizing control of the other two landing sites with minimal losses.”
Antaria nodded. Just as planned. Still…
“I hear some hesitance in your voice, Major.”
The woman shuffled a bit in place, head tendrils twitching in place as she subtly shifted her weight from foot to foot - which was a signifier as great as any as to just how uncomfortable the other woman was.
Edixi did not shuffle. They stood straight. Proud. At all times.
“It’s the…” the woman paused as another crackle rang out, a frown twisting her features.
Not that Antaria blamed her for that. The lasers used by most species across the galaxy were all but silent when they fired. But the sound when they hit flesh? Well, the pop was rather unmistakable.
Still, they were soldiers and were more than accustomed to that particular nuance of warfare. If Antaria were to guess, it was the context more

First of all, dad jokes CAN be NSFW, it clearly says so in the sub rules. Secondly, it doesn't automatically make it a dad joke if it's from a conversation between you and your child. Most importantly, the jokes that your CHILDREN tell YOU are not dad jokes. The point of a dad joke is that it's so cheesy only a dad who's trying to be funny would make such a joke. That's it. They are stupid plays on words, lame puns and so on. There has to be a clever pun or wordplay for it to be considered a dad joke.

POTENTIAL HEADLINERS
Drive My Car is the sixth film to win these three awards circles. I wanted to look how the past films that won them did at the Oscars. First lets be clear, all the past 5 films were Best Picture Nominees, but all were also American films. The data is below but here is some simple statistics, these five films averaged 8.8 (round up to 9) nominations per film, with average of 3.8 (round up to 4) wins per film.
Some interesting tidbits, all but Goodfellas won screenplay (lost to Picture winner Dances With Wolves) and all five were nominated for Picture, Director, Screenplay, and Film Editing. Looking at other big societies with these five films: 3 of them were NBR Top film (all made top 10), 2 won their Golden Globe category (again all nominated), and 3 of them won BAFTA Best Film (all nominated again).
The last big thing to look at imo is the 4 big guilds (PGA, DGA, SAG Ensemble, and WGA). I've included these below with a * next to the film if it won the award. Note that PGA didn't give nominations for its first award in 1990 and SAG ensemble didn't start until 1995 (after Goodfellas and Schindler's List).
So what does this imply for Drive My Car? Ultimately not much in terms of wins except to watch out for it especially in Adapted Screenplay, I can't see it winning but I'd be shocked if it isn't nominated at this point. I think at this point watching what the guilds do is our next big thing. If it can get into WGA (if eligible) and one at least of PGA/DGA, its a lock for Picture imo. I personally have it in 10th spot for Picture over a third netflix film, Nightmare Alley, and blockbusters like No Way Home and No Time to Die. I think it may sneak into Director also over either Branagh (most likely) or PTA.
I will say that this is slightly misleading now that I am looking back. Only 26 colleges were applied to, but there were 30 decisions total. This was for class of 2025, but I didn't post in the past because even though it's been more than 6 months, I can't say I'm over these results. I'll add more in the note at the end. To those of you that recognize me, please ignore this and do not send this around. I still am not over my college decisions so I would rather this stay anonymous.

Our new article from the Canadian Housing Statistics Program shows that a larger proportion of properties built in Yukon between 1971 and 1990 are located in census subdivisions close to mining sites, compared with other construction periods. This was partially because of growth in the mining industry.

Do your worst!
I'm surprised it hasn't decade.
Yes, I know it's a provocative title (intentionally), but if you think this post is geared towards you, I want to assure you that it's likely not. Statistically, it's not.
This post is for the 10% and fewer (the vocal minority) who are review-bombing this thing into oblivion.
Now, if you have honest, genuine, and thoughtful complaints about the show, I get that. I truly do. In fact, I respect you. I have a few issues as well.
But if you're leaving the lowest review possible because it's too "woke" (it's not) or because it's "nothing" like the books (false), then you're clearly still in the anger stage of grief and I hope you quickly snap out of it.
I'm not going to go on about why we should review-bomb the show (even though we shouldn't) so we don't self-sabotage it, because there are plenty of other posts on that in this thread. However, I do want to emphasize that if the show gets canceled (and if it does, review-bombers will have played a role), you are truly delusional if you think we'll get another shot at a legitimate adaptation in our lifetime.
Here's a hot take that I'm going to thoroughly defend:
I think this is a brilliant adaptation. While I wouldn't call the show a masterpiece, I would call it a masterful adaptation. I'm going to give some specific examples below about the choices the show makes vs. what is printed in the books.
Before I start diving deep into the details as to why it's a masterful adaptation (and again, a brilliant one at that), I want you to truly think about how Amazon has treated not only the show, but US as a fandom.
Seriously. Have you seen the Twitter account? Not only do they engage with fans, they do so in a way that it's clear it's not some intern social media manager. Whoever is managing their social media is fans of the books. The way they use references... it's clear that these people have READ the books and have a thorough understanding. It would be impossible for a noob to use some of these references and inside jokes. And that's just the people doing the social media marketing.
That should tell you a lot about the passion and therefore intentions behind the creative decisions being made.
Another example is the soundtrack. We're getting five... FIVE... full albums from Lorne Balfe just for season 1. As a composer, I can tell you that this is virtually unheard of in the industry. We got the conceptual album, and we're getting 1 full album for every two episodes in season 1. **Let me

So here's the most popular 20 ships to write fanfiction about on both Pixiv and AO3:

Does anyone know how one can derive the microcanonical, canonical and grand canonical ensembles using gibbs entropy?
Edit 1: Reworded some sentences and phrases for clarity.
Edit 2: As a clarification, the tags, relationship, and character numbers are all out of the 800 most viewed fics (about the top 1% of fics) in the Minecraft Fandom, NOT the total amount of fics with those tags in the fandom. As a rough extrapolation, you can multiply the numbers by 100 (for just the Minecraft Fandom) or 200 (to encompass the Video Blogging RPF fandom) to get a general idea about the absolute number of fics with that tag/relationship in the fandom (or just search that tag).
I'm aware that sampling the 800 most popular fics, as opposed to random sampling, will result in bias, but that's a choice I made consciously to include the opinion of the readers (through views) in this analysis. People who write fanfiction do tend to be more passionate than readers, given that they put in the time to write about their favorite fandoms, so I think factoring the number of views a fic gets helps represent the broader MCYT fandom, as opposed to just the community of MCYT fanfiction writers.
Outside of this subreddit, I have seen multiple complaints that the fandom excessively sexualizes content creators and that MCYT has trouble reigning in their fanbase from creating pornographic content of them.
However, is that idea merely based on anecdotal evidence and a few problematic stans being extremely vocal, or is there a larger problem with the community?
Instead of working On my own time, I decided to scrape Archive of Our Own to see if the reputation MCYT fanfiction has for sexualizing content creators is warranted, and I've compiled my findings below.
I used the ao3-api by Armindo Flores and Python to scrape the Minecraft fandom on Archive of Our Own.
If you want to explore the results further, here's a link to the data I scraped from AO3: https://www.dropbox.com/sh/glp7i7hrdg5ncth/AACWkueaWw_Nvi8SdIjLK9ala?dl=0
The easiest indicator of sexualized and pornographic content is the rating and warnings the AO3 uses for fanfiction. For those who aren't aware, the rating system classifies works into 4 categories (plus an Unrated category) that indicates what audience is the work appropriate for. General and Teen tend to be family friendly and lack anything more explicit than hugging and kissing (or cut to black if sex is mentio
