Shoulder width reduction actually reducing?

Hello I’ve been looking recently at shoulder width reduction surgery videos, though the difference I see in the patients are minimal but quite enough to be considered feminine, I was just wondering if anyone has any more knowledge on this? From what the surgeon said, apparently the surgery just rolls the shoulders forward rather than actually shortening them, unless I misunderstood? Can anyone give me some information?

shoulder reduction surgery

I saw a recent comment recommending against shoulder reduction surgery on the grounds that a). healing is tough and b). there is a subsequent loss in shoulder mobility.

I was wondering if anyone had any information about this as it is contrary to the testimonies I've seen which have usually been very positive. My understand is that the procedure is based on techniques developed to help healing in patients with fractures to their collar bone and as such is well established as viable. Of course all operations involve healing and famously with shoulder reduction surgery you can't lift your elbows away from your torso for a period of time, but my impression is that the recovery is not nearly as intense as say SRS or FFS.

I am particularly concerned about b). I hadn't heard anything about this before, but it is obviously a concern with this type of surgery. Does anyone have advice/information?

Clavicle/Shoulder Reduction Surgery. Anyone willing to post or DM results?

I've spent the last nearly 5 months researching into HRT, surgeries, and socially living life as trans as much as I can without throwing my life completely out of whack. I'll cut to the chase

One thing I want done though is clavicle shortening, eventually, which would be paid out of pocket. It looks safe and recovery from it looks fine enough. I only can find 3 before and after shots with this surgery. 2 of those only show shoulders and cover the rest of their body.

Is anyone willing to post or DM me results? I'm slightly more interested in how the back side looks, honestly, more than anything. I have above average shoulders even for a guy at 6ft tall and results from this surgery mean a lot to me. I know it doesn't have to be, but for $15,000, it would probably provide more day-to-day comfort than $15,000 towards my house... as weird as that may sound. House money will get there eventually.

Would it make more sense to have a breast reduction before or after shoulder surgery?

I do plan on asking my doctors but wanted to ask people who have had reductions for advice! I likely need shoulder surgery to fix a minor bicep tear but my physical therapist and primary care doc think my breast size (36F) is contributing to my continuing shoulder pain. I have consults scheduled to look into a breast reduction. From a recovery stand point would it make more sense to have the reduction before or after the shoulder surgery? My concern is if I do the shoulder procedure first that my large chest would put a strain on the muscles. Any thoughts are appreciated!

Number of people who have undergone shoulder reduction?

I've been investigating shoulder reduction lately, especially since it seems to have become a little less fringe. One problem, in part due to the lack of online discussion - to say nothing of published research - on the subject, is assessing risk. There has been one case of a major complication posted on this subreddit, but it's hard to figure out the context - is that one out of ten? a hundred? several hundred?

For those of you who have consulted with one of the surgeons doing this (Rogers, Eppley, Moser, Kimura... am I missing anyone else?), did they tell you how many procedures they've done and how many complications they've seen? (If you do have this data, please include roughly when they told this to you - I imagine the number has gone up quite a bit in the last two years).

Also, have any of these people done any procedures with intramedullary screws rather than plates? A post on this subreddit mentioned Rogers includes it as an option, but that same post mentioned that he had never done it before... the implication that you'll be a guinea pig for him if you get it done is strong....

Thanks!

How do I fix my painful shoulders after reduction?

Hi all,

TL;DR: what exercises or practices do y'all use to build muscle strength/relieve shoulder tension/correct posture after surgery?

I got surgery 2.5 months ago, going from an H cup to a DD (I would have gone lower, but regrettably my surgeon didn't ask how much I wanted reduced and I didn't think to advocate for myself!)

I definitely feel a massive reduction in shoulder pain and a greatly improved ability to have good posture, but my shoulders are as hard as a rock! I still feel like I have years of tension and asymetrical muscles that are pulling my shoulders forward into a slumped posture.

My question to you all - what exercise routines or daily practices did you do to relieve shoulder tension, build up muscle strengths, and loosen up shoulders after a reduction surgery?

I personally enjoy the shoulder opening routine by Yogatic (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ppToA1N0CgE) but it's not doing enough for me.

Thanks to all who respond! :)

Shoulder Width Reduction Surgeons

Hey everyone! I’m very interested in moving ahead with shoulder width reduction surgery. There’s not a great deal of information out there since it’s not very common, but it seems to be a relatively straightforward and low risk surgery, albeit with a challenging recovery period.

The two principal surgeons who seem to offer it are Barry Eppley in Indiana and Leif Rogers in California. Does anyone have any experience with either of them, or any indication that one is more experienced at the surgery than the other? Or are there any other options? I’d be especially interested in any European surgeons. Any views or opinions either way would be very welcome!

My consult with Dr. Eppley regarding shoulder reduction/rib removal

Hi all, you may remember my post here from the other day, to which this is a follow-up-

https://www.reddit.com/r/Transgender_Surgeries/comments/lh3cxn/can_you_all_help_me_find_what_more_body_surgeries

-where I asked about what more body surgeries I should talk to Dr. Barry Eppley about. A few commenters said "share your experience when you hear from him!"

Well, I had my consultation and got a quote, so I'm here to report back!

He's a really friendly guy, as my other surgeons I've met with have been, and we talked about shoulder reduction, rib removal, temple implants, breast augmentation, and he briefly mentioned hip implants though I'm more interested in the first few things I mentioned.

He said basically nothing that isn't already available info on the wiki about shoulder reduction, which was fine, I think surgeons have to talk over the procedure.

We then discussed rib removal, which he assured me as to the safety of, the way most people attest that it's a safe procedure, and he talked about how he could at the same time do liposuction on the region as well as remove some of the musculature that holds together the removed ribs (the intercostal muscles, I believe)- a bunch more than I bargained for and I'm really excited about!

This would provide me with the smallest waist I can get on my frame, which I desperately need because as numerous people have pointed out, my body is craaazy boxy and I need work done on it. He noted that lipo alone wouldn't be a good option, given that I'm fairly lean (where he got this idea, I don't know, quarantine has not been kind to my waistline!), though I'd definitely like to pursue lipo in the future on places like my arms and back that need work, if I can't manage to lose more weight there.

I also stated that I wanted to do breast augmentation, on the recommendation of some of the people here (thanks for you input, y'all!) which he said adds a day or two of recovery time in tandem with another procedure and would be easy to do. This is also true of temple implants, which offer the advantage of being long-term solutions the way fat grafting isn't.

However, he stated that after-care being a big concern, he's reluctant to both rib removal and shoulder reduction at the same time the way he would be willing to do both BA and either procedure because of how incapacitating both are. After making it clear to him that I would have the help of my family afterwards, though, in contrast to most of his patients who go t

Will a breast reduction help my neck and shoulder pain?

I am a 32H and I’m considering breast reduction surgery as a last resort for severe neck/shoulder pain and terrible posture. I already had a consultation with a plastic surgeon and was approved by my insurance. I am hesitating though because I’m so scared that I’ll have the surgery and my pain won’t go away. I usually start off with just a little pain in the morning but it always gets worse throughout the day, even if I don’t do much. If I do lift things, reach above my head a lot or hang my head forward, it gets really bad. I’ve been to an orthopedist who said that nothing was wrong with my spine and that it was just muscle strain. I’ve also tried physical therapy and a chiropractor with no relief. If anyone has had a breast reduction for similar reasons and is now fully recovered, could you please let me know if it helped? Thank you!

Any NYC doctor suggestions that could help build case for necessary reduction due to shoulder, neck, and upper back pain?

I just had my consult with a new ortho from NY Presbyterian and I'm so discouraged because he didn't order xray and MRI for my thoracic and cervical spine. He also didn't recommend PT for those areas even when I mentioned i had pain there aside from my lower back. I know I have worse lower back pains than upper back/neck/shoulder because of my herniated discs but it seems like he just completely disregarded my request to help with my upper back pain as well. So discouraged cos I was hopeful about this consult.

Should i just get an ortho/physio/osteo who will deliberately help me document my pain from my breast and help me with getting approved by insurance? And do I have to just stop mentioning I have worse lower back pains to a different doctor? I know this lower back pain is just getting worse because of my big boobs and I really just want to get rid of them. THEY ARE SO HEAVY.

Please please please give me Ortho and PT recommendations for NYC. Would really help this whole process go faster :(

I had shoulder width reduction with Dr Eppley a couple of weeks ago.

I had shoulder width reduction with Dr Eppley in Indiana on Oct 31. There's not much info out there about this procedure, so I thought I'd share.

The surgery involves shortening the length of the clavicles by removing a segment of bone on each side. The results are instantaneous and there's really no swelling and little pain to speak of. It takes about 8 weeks for the bones to fully heal though, so you can't really use your arms much during that period. All in all, the cost was a little over 17000 USD.

Dr Eppley has some more info on his blog.

I'm really happy with the result. My shoulder width (bideltoid) has gone from 49.5 cm down to 45 cm. I'm 182 cm tall, so according to this site I've gone from average width for men my height, to the average width for women my height. Just what I wanted.

I travelled all the way from Sweden to Indiana by myself to have it done. It's doable, but I wouldn't recommend going alone unless you really have to. You won't be able to use your arms much for the first few weeks. Even the simplest things like getting dressed or going to the bathroom are a hassle. And I couldn't do my hair at all. I'm just now allowed to flare my elbows a bit, >2 weeks post-op.

The recovery itself is really boring though. I spent one night at the hospital, and then 9 more at the hotel before going back home. Most of that time was just spent sitting around watching TV and occasionally taking a short walk around the hotel.

Anyways, here are some pictures:

Before and after taken by the clinic.

4 days pre-op -> 2.5 weeks post-op

Feel free to ask questions in case you have any!

Consultation with Orthopedic Surgeon - Shoulder Reduction Surgery

I had my consultation with an orthopedic surgeon for clavicle reduction. Overall, he was very sympathetic. He’s not yet convinced either way if he would do it. Ultimately, he would want me to go through a similar process that they would do at the university for bottom surgery, basically determining if it’s medical/surgically necessary. I wish I had more to report back, but I can share what I did learn.

His biggest concern was with the muscles. Messing with the tension of the muscles is where most of the issues happen. I can’t speak much more in depth than that.

He said a reduction if 2cm each side would be the textbook answer, but that it would be completely individual for what’s possible. He also said he would cut the bone at an angle to increase the surface area. He mentioned something about planes I think, but more interestingly that there is a twist to the bone that would have to be taken into account when rejoining.

I asked about location, where he would take out the bone, and he wasn’t super certain. Towards the sternum would be good to increase surface area which is better for healing, but you couldn’t go too close because you need to fit screws in. Not to mention all the undulations and curves, basically just makes it hard to say.

I asked about plate and screw fixation vs intramedullary needle and he would likely do plate and screw. Didn’t seem like he thought it would make much a difference, even remarking that the needle technique was just marketing.

He would want to do scans first, to figure out more of the specifics. Next steps are to basically meet with the trans team at the university and determine if it’s worth pursuing.

That’s basically all I can remember, I’m sorry that it’s nothing revolutionary, but I think it’s somewhat helpful.

[Information] Shoulder width reduction surgery does exist. (Clavicle shortening | shoulder narrowing)

As a heads-up for those of you who might consider attending a clavicle shortening process:

##What?

This procedure consists of full anaesthesia, scars, bone breaking/cutting/taking a piece out of both sides (maximum of 2cm on each side) and titanium plates to keep everything in place afterwards. You could think about it like an sports injury, but instead of the already broken clavicles your surgeon would break them for you.

##Is that something common?

Actually, kinda yes. People often break their clavicles because of several reasons really. It's just a bit uncommon for your surgeon to break them for you.

##Where?

You would want to consult an emergency surgeon as they most often get in contact with people who happen to have broken clavicles. Either that or surgeons who list that procedure as one of their dailies.

##At what cost?

Depending on what surgeon you have consulted and what country you are living in, you are going to pay from about starting at 10k€+.

##Aftercare?

.. consists of not being able to do anything for yourself for roughly three weeks and lying in bed where you must rest your arms and shoulders - meaning that you are not allowed to lay either sideways or on your belly.

####How or why do I (a trans masc individual) know?

I underwent it just about a month ago. This is nothing which I would consider a gender related thing and though my shoulders weren't huge they have been really bothering me anyways. Thus, I am quite happy about them now.
