I am in the process of building a small retort and am wondering where I would need to place a pyrometer to determine process temperature. Is it inside the canister that holds the fuel or will placing it is the exhaust flue work? It seems like the later would be adequate. My design makes getting internal temperature of the fuel cannister difficult. Thoughts?
I've got a hole in the front of my stove that has always been empty, which is clearly for a thermometer/pyrometer. It is unthreaded. I'm looking for any recommendations that people have for a reasonably accurate unit that would mount in the hole, giving me a temperature rating of the gasses inside the fire chamber for that location and not just the temperature of the steel door.
ID is 7.41mm (.292") which I'm guessing is a very loose fit for a 1/4" probe and thickness of door is 6.35mm (.25")
I'm a senior at my high school and the art department asked me to try and build them a new pyrometer/thermocouple as they thought I was up to the task. I was wondering what a good place to look for sensors would be as all that I've found hasn't gone high enough. All I have found is sensors that go to around 700ΒΊC. I need to be at a minimum of 1200ΒΊC.
I have ~10 IMPAC 140 IS PB/DP pyrometers that are set up for Profibus, but have no plc. They are basically just wired into furnaces to read and control furnace temp.
I need to update some internal settings on the pyrometers - primarily adjusting for emissivity. They only way to do this is through the profibus connection/control.
I have some Siemens equipment removed from some decommissioned machines.
Can anyone point me to some basic layout information that would help me determine the configuration I might need?

Then separately on one ~18 inch x ~6 inch bar (not sure what it's called in Siemens speak)

I have an analog pyrometer and I was wondering if a digital one would be more accurate?
Also, are there options for having the truck automatically shut off when the EGT is under 300Β°? Something where I could lock it up take the keys out and leave the truck with it still idling until my EGT is under 300Β°?
If so, could someone point me in the right direction? And how reliable are these theoretical systems? I don't want my truck to idle all 8 hours I'm at work...
I have a coffee can forge, and I plan on using a thermocouple or pyrometer to adjust the gas flow and in turn, the heat. I've been told that you can control the temperature with an accuracy of about 5Β°.
I'm looking at this device for my budget, but the only one I've been recommended is from Auburn Instruments and costs around $50. Any reason why I shouldn't go with the cheaper of the two? Thanks for the input.
Edit: Update for anyone reading this thread:
Went up to VT to the shop where my sister's learning glass blowing. The owner told me that if I put in a couple days helping to set up his blacksmith shop he'll hook me up with a thermocouple, firebricks and a burner. He'll even throw in some leather on top! Things are looking up and I'm going to grind the rest of my O1 so it's ready for HT by the time I've got the new forge.

I am also interested in information on what to look for in a simi-decent pyrometer.
Has anyone had the need to install an Add-On Profile into an Allen-Bradley PLC for an infrared pyrometer? We've been using Ametek/Land but they only give a single 4-20 mA temperature output. We need to have data access to other settings (such as emissivity) for Management-Of-Change for the process. I'm open to changing brands, but so far I haven't been able to find anything that fits our needs.
I am starting to work on plans for a gas kiln. I'm looking around for pyrometer and I figured I'd ask around for suggestions from anyone who has one.
I want at least a dual-read pyrometer, don't really see the point in getting a pyrometer if I can only have a single probe in during firing. I'd also like one that will give me readings above 1999ΒΊf. Other than that I'm open to most anything.
Oh, and I can't afford a Fluke, so that's the other limitation.
