November 18, 1963 Bell Telephone introduced dual-tone multi-frequency (DTMF ) dialing replacing traditional pulse dialing with Touch-Tone. The first push-button telephone went into service that day. Phreaking at 2600 hertz followed shortly. Pictured here is a Cap'n Crunch Bosun Whistle. Dig It!

Are red telephone booths still everywhere in the UK? Do they still have phones in them? Is there a push to remove them from service and/or convert them to something else?
The iconic red telephone booths, are they still around and what will their fate be ultimately? Do people generally want them to remain in place, given how iconic they are, or remove them from streets given they are basically useless today?
Or an option C, convert them to something else? In NY, they converted many payphones into public Wi-Fi hotspots, perhaps the same can be done with some of the red booths in the UK, without ruining the look of course. And maybe on the inside there can be maps and other information for tourists, maybe even a standing desk so someone could actually do work there if they wanted.
