A list of puns related to "Pokemon Nickname"
I really enjoy when i think of a clever or fun name for pokemon when i name them. For example, i just recently thought of giving roserade the name 'Sapphia' because i can see it as an amalgam of stereotypes for lesbians. Or how i name torterra 'Juniper' because the tree on its back resembles a juniper bonsai. My favourite though is shinx which i always name 'Stormy'.
I like to nickname my Pokemon, and I try to come up with ones that are clever, funny, or fitting. For instance, I named a Pigeotto with Aerial Ace "Richtoffen" (after the Red Baron, Manfred Von Richtofen), and I named a Drowzee "Nyquil".
What funny or creative names have you all come up with? I'm sure you've had a few you're proud of.
With Legends Arceus coming out, I'd like to put forth my hottest take about the Pokemon series and the title pretty much says it all. I've always thought that its weird and unnatural that you're the only person in the entire region that bothers to name their Pokemon. That being said, I'm really excited to get into the new game and I'm going into it mostly blind.
Edit: Obviously I know that this will probably never happen because of brand recognition and marketing and stuff. This is less of a real call to action and just something that I wanted to put out there lol.
What are some nicknames you always give certain Pokemon, regardless of the game or mood? For instance, I always name my Vaporeons "Toaster" and my Garchomps "Sharkura". What are yours?
EDIT: Just for clarification, the game doesn't treat the Pokemon as an egg. It works just fine in battle and everything. It's just the text that refers to it as an egg.
I've been playing through BDSP with my partner and trying to complete the Pokedex. We've been trading Pokemon back and forth, nicknaming everything. I traded them a Chansey I had nicknamed "Egg" and noticed that the game's text seems to refer to it as an actual Pokemon egg. Instead of saying "Sending [nickname] to [trainer]" it'll say "Sending the Egg to [trainer]"
Here's an example of the game's text referring to it as "the Egg"
It's sorta funny sorta strange. If anyone tries replicating this themselves, let me know if you encounter the same issue
I have never been a person to give my pokemon nicknames. I could probably count the amount of nicknames I've given on 1 hand. I've given one nickname in my BD playthrough so far. I nicknamed my Piplup Penguu. Do you guys use nicknames? If so, what are some previous nicknames you are proud of or stick out to you.
I have noticed in gameplay footage that when you catch a pokemon, you simply get a little graphic in the top of the screen that tells you that you have caught it, there is no menu at all. I do not necessarily have a problem with this, as it does indeed fit the format that Legends has, but it would definitely dissapoint me if you could not nickname your pokemon. Even If this is in the early days of pokemon training just in general, it is kinda stupid to imply that nicklnaming your partner pokemon was first "invented later". This would greatly disappoint me as I have always been the type to nickname all my pokemon, so I hope it is not so
For me it was Dragonite, didnβt really like using it until Gen V but I named it Big Yin after Billy Connolly and started to use it more and more. Now I name every Dragonite Big Yin to the point that my mates associate Dragonite with me and question when I donβt use it/name it. Guess it reminds me of my Scottish roots.
Let me know if you did something similar which Pokemon it was, nickname and why in the comments :)
EDIT: Iβm loving all these stories :) thanks for sharing
I saw that the owner guy was giving a few teams extra nicknames (e.g. "Team Dirt aka meme lords") and I wanted to help. Also, to see what you guys would call other teams!
Team Shadow - Edgy The Gathering
Team Bio - VSCO Mons
Team Sky - Brain Birds
Team Anti-Clockwise - Bite Za Dusto
Team Astral - Mons in Black
For me, it's my Deciduye's name, Arsene. I'm a big fan of the Persona franchise, especially Persona 5, and Decidueye represents me in a lot of ways other then being my favorite Pokemon. Cool and level-headed but can panic sometimes when things don't go to plan. You could say he's my own persona LOL. Also, it was really cool how the flavor text would say Go! Arsene! similar to when Joker summons him in Persona 5.
What about you guys, what nicknames have you come up with that you love?
My favorite Pokemon of all time is Krookodile. I love them. Krookodile pulled through in the battle against Ghetsis back in B/W and ever since then they've been a member of my team.
I have 2 main Krookodile that I use in battle:
Quinn was named after Haryley Quinn (it was 2010, be nice) and Legend was named after a specific dragon from a short series that I like.
Now that brings us to today.
I just hatched a 6IV male Totodile; and I'm ready for him to become a world wrecker like Quinn and Legend. But I can't think of a name that fully captures how intimidating, powerful, noble, and blood thirsty that I envision Feraligatr to be be.
If you've got a powerful/refined nickname out there, I'd love to hear it.
What are some pretty clever, punny nicknames you have used during playthroughs? Here are some of my favorites I've had or come across:
My dad loves PokΓ©mon. About two years ago he actually got a smart phone, upgrading from his beloved flip phone, for the sole purpose of playing PokΓ©mon go with us.
He has a friend at work who travels internationally often for military so he is always trading with him getting regional exclusives, and more importantly to him distance for his distance trade medals.
So in order to keep everything organized when he catches a PokΓ©mon he wants to hold on to for a trade he will simply put a T in front of the name, and any eggs he hatches that are from international friends he will put the T plus the country so he has an estimate on distance.
Today we all went out to lunch(dad, step-mom, sister, brother and myself) and he was telling me that the game wouldn't let him rename a PokΓ©mon like he normally does and just couldn't figure out why
He was trying to put the T in front of bagon so he would remember it was for trading and not to transfer it. So he sits there showing me how he couldn't put "tbagon" as a nickname because it was 'offensive.' While I had to tell him that "tbag" is considered offensive and that was why he couldn't use it
Naturally, him being 53, he had no clue what tbagging was. So my brother, the youngest and biggest gamer of us took it upon himself to explain what it is. In the middle of the restraunt. In a very loud voice.
We are all dying laughing while my dad is trying to figure out what on earth tbagging is and why it could possibly be a thing.
Tl;Dr- game wouldn't let dad rename bagon to "Tbagon" and little brother explains what tbagging is very loudly in a restaurant.
Edit: autocorrect. Should really proofread before posting
I just started my Journey, and I nicknamed my Chimchar 'Chimichanga'. I'd love to hear everyones creative names that they've given their PokΓ©mon. Nicknaming pokemon has always been so much more immersive to me than leaving them with their original names, especially when its something that's clever & unique. If you chose not to name your starter, tell me the best nickname you've ever given one of your PokΓ©mon.
In case you were wondering how I got Raichu and Gengar: I used the UPrandomizer to enable impossible evolutions (such as evolving starter pikachu with a thunder stone, and evolving the 4 trade pokemon by reaching lvl 37).

Pretty proud of it, but I do notice that the movesets of the elite four pokemon are pretty crappy. Raichu took care of Lorelei, Gengar with psychic and Vaporeon took care of Bruno, Gengar and Sandslash with swords dance + earthquake destroyed Agatha, Raichu and Vaporeon blasted through Lance, and the entire team was able to contribute in the fight against the rival. Basically used Dodrio for a single fight in the elite four, but it's still a pretty fun pokemon to use in a playthrough I've noticed.
I got one with a normal name and one with a stupid nickname
Just curious if you ever give your Pokemon nicknames? I tend to name the ones I want to keep on my team. Usually I go with some kind of mythological and/or nerd names.
Has anyone else transfered pokemon from GO to any of the console games with a nickname? If so did anyone experience the nickname being changed to the actual name upon evolving? I had a shiny Gible that I caught in GO. I nicknamed it Grace as it was female. It kept the name all the way through from GO to Home to Sword, but when it evolved into Gabite it had the original pokemon name not the nickname it was given.
It's like they took a step forward with SWSH and then two steps back. You can make the argument that it wasn't in the originals so its not that big of a deal but there are a lot of things that weren't in the originals in these games. Such as the shiny charm and grand underground with pokemon hideaways.
For me? It'd have to be " Men'ari " for Alolan Marowak which comes from the skull in both Hearthstone and WoW which also has green flames spewing from it.
Another good name I like is " Juvia " from Fairy Tail to name my Kingdra's, this one may be much more common as it is based on a popular anime, but I still like it.
Over 20 years worth, in fact! Please allow me to share the cringe! π
Name a Pokemon and I'll tell you all about the name(s) that I've given to it.
Just don't ask me about my Liepard and my Purugly-- named after my irl cats.
Also, my Gogoat/Chevruum and Politoed/Quaxo are just their German names because I like them.
Pluckin balls outta the air, pluckin roster spots from veterans ahead of him, pluckin benjamins out of his jeans when he gets extended in a few years.
TM88 baby.
