On my most recent run, I went from Byzantium to the Roman Empire and mare nostrum provinces. I have been trying to do this forever, and I just wanted to share some strategies Iβve learned from multiple failed games (early and late game).

I donβt see a lot of late game Byzantium tips, so I wanted to share mine that Iβve learned. Iβll start a caveat that I had already achieved mare nostrum on an easier nation during a different game (France), so the Mare nostrum achievement does not show up here, but the provinces are there.

I also have the Purple Phoenix DLC for added Byzantium flavor. My approach did not include any PUs, so this achievement is doable without them (although I did have my eyes peeled for them. If this guide helps others, then great!
A few extra gems from my game included:
A) Vassalizing a released Romania for double the Romans. I feel like this should be a separate achievement as the Roman Empire.

B) Attempted (failed) at getting the HRE princes to convert to orthodox. Itβs only holy roman if itβs orthodox. In retrospect, this is a fun strategy because it boosts your Defender of the Faith bonuses.
C) Allied Timurids, who turned into a scary Mughal recreation of the southern Mongol empire.

D) United States sprouted up from an independent Dutch colony. They rivaled Britainβs thirteen colonies and subsequently became a Great Power just stronger than Britain.

E) The Cillians went on vacation in their true home (never go against a Si-cillian when death is on the line.

F) An AI organic uncommonwealth. Lithuania formed the commonwealth after Poland lost the PU.
