Before I start this story I have to add a bit of backstory. I am a 19yr old male and when I was younger (around 14) I used to do Taekwondo classes, I was a black belt at the time and I really enjoyed it. We had a few incidents where parents would take there aggressive kids into classes for a free trial but they where mostly delt with by the instructor, but nothing makes my blood boil like this incident.
I did Taekwondo on every Tuesday and Thursday for around an hour. While on Thursdays I was in an age requirement class which was 13+ so most kids had common sense and it was tougher than Tuesdayβs which had no age requirement and I was helping the instructor teach as I had done training for it which helped me with getting a job because I was planning on working in a place like that. So one Tuesday afternoon (10 minutes after the class had started) a EM runs up the stairs making a ruckus with her whining EK (who looked around 7). The instructor lets me know that Iβll take over for awhile as he goes and assists the EM and EK. While Iβm showing the class (who were mostly young kids around 7-9) how to do a certain punch, the EK bursts through the door and runs straight over to the punching bags. He proceeds to push me over (as I was crouching) and start punching the bag. I stand up immediately and say to the EK in a semi-unhappy tone βhey you canβt be doing that to othersβ He immediately stopped punching the bag and says I kid you not βF*** off you c**tβ I stare in shock at the kid who was younger than most people in the room that was using language that I wouldnβt even use on my worst day. The EK then skips away like nothing happened. While still in shock I continue the class as I would tell the instructor after he returned about the incident. I look over to the EK who was saying something to his EM (which I assume was about me) while she was purchasing a uniform. She stops and looks over to me in pure disgust then says something to the instructor who had a confused look. Thatβs when another kid grabbed my arm and asked for my help with a punch. I gladly go over and help him to get out of that situation.
About 10 minutes later the EK comes out of the toilets wearing a uniform with a wet stain on it already (which we can all agree on what it was) and he proceeds to start talking to the other kids about his Minecraft world. Luckily the instructor overheard this and went over to tell the EK to listen or sit out. In which he replies βFineeeeeeeβ The instruct

Hello all. I am looking to get back into Martial Arts and to get my young into it for the first time.
My son is 4 (about to be 5 in October) and is full of energy. I remember practicing Martial Arts and learning self control and discipline and I want the same thing for him.
I practiced a mix of JKD, BJJ, Muay Thai, and Wing Chun in the past. I would like to find an MMA school in the Glen Allen/Lakeside area that will teach real techniques (not just flashy kicks and pretty punches).
Anyone know of any good schools that have both adult and kids classes on the northern side of Richmond?
Does anyone have any experience with any self defense classes or anything associated with it, ex: mma, boxing, krav maga, brazilian jiu jitsu, etc? looking to get into it to learn everything about it (discipline, fitness, conditioning, etc) but also for the training aspect... not looking into competing just to better myself... Thanks
Iβve received a couple comments saying βcalling me outβ on my last post talking about things that seemed off, I agree with that I did cut the story short and a little has happened since then as well. So hereβs your update.
I was planning on going back to the place the next day after I was kicked out but when i received the email i decided to scratch that idea. The EM never sued us or anything which was what my dad was planning for and he said he would take it all up when she does something first (not sure why) And if it wasnβt obvious already I declined their offer to return saying that I already had a real job that I got payed for. A couple years later around when I was 16 I still had a friend (M) who went there despite all my criticism, and one day the old instructor quit. And they got a new one who wasnβt strict at all and he would let a lot go by- my friends words. One day the instructor went on the phone leaving the class with nothing to do after around 5 minutes heβs puts his phone away and goes back to the class. He seemed like a know nothing relief teacher. My friend got sick of it after that and left as well. Now back to real time, I got told to go back to the place asking for a refund which I thought a stupid but funny idea. So thatβs exactly what I did. I went to the place went up the stairs and sat outside. luckily it was open at the time. And surprising to me the old instructor was there I waited outside until he finished the class and went up to him. He looked at me and we walked over to a counter sort of thing and this is how the following conversation goes: βRemember me?β I say. βSorry I donβtβ he replies. I grab my phone out and show him the email about being unbanned.βIβve come to get a refund for the year of classes I missed out on. Then he takes another look at me and it looks like he just clicked. βI I-m sorry but your still banned hereβ βThatβs not what your official company email said.β (I show him my phone again and point to old messages confirming purchases from the place from years ago) βWell I wasnβt told anything about itβ he says. βYou know damn well, unbanning people who might have done something very wrong is a btch moveβ He continues to tell me how he had nothing to do with it. βAm i receiving my refund or not?β He turns around and goes into the back room with his phone. I decide Iβve had enough and I leave then and there. I drive off and I donβt plan on ever coming back to that sht load of a βTaekwondo dojoβ thatβs hopef

I want to find a gym that has squat racks, benches, power cages, and ideally classes like krav maga or boxing or capeoira that we can do together. Preferably offering a joint membership. Any suggestions?
Dear community, I will be moving to Medford MA very soon and am looking to join Martial Arts, especially Muay Thai classes. I have taken trial classes a couple of times and liked it and would love to join a gym that welcomes an older beginner to martial arts. I would love your recos and my price range is around $85 - $125/month. I am also okay with any other styles of Martial arts as long as there is sparring practice (only after mastering the fundamentals of course) that would fit within my budget.
Looking forward to MA and a very prosperous New Year to all of you
Iβm currently taking Muay Thai/striking classes, and the impact itβs had on my confidence has been profound. Iβm not advanced by any means; itβs humbling and difficult physically (and mentally) at times. But thatβs what matters. Pushing yourself outside of your comfort zone consistently is a sure fire way to maintain confidence. This is type of confidence will carry over into all other aspects of your life.
Taking some bullshit adult karate class where you advance every few months simply for participating wonβt help. You want to choose a discipline where you are drilling/sparring with others consistently, competing and exerting yourself physically. Boxing, Muay Thai, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, Judo, general MMA are some examples. The benefits are multifaceted:
Social: You are interacting and cooperating with others when you drill with someone. You have to communicate, and work together to go through each exercise successfully
Competition: When sparring or rolling with someone, you are competing with them on a very personal level, with direct contact. Having this sort of competitive interaction consistently is incredibly rewarding.
Facing challenges: Sparring or heavy contact drilling can be intimidating, especially if you are relatively new. Experiencing mild physical pain and the prospect of inflicting mild pain on someone else pushes your boundaries.
Physical fitness: Competing in these types of activities is physically demanding. Training involves both intense cardiovascular and strength exercises over an extended period.
Goal setting: There is an inherent element of advancement and improvement in marital arts, even with disciplines without a ranking system, you are striving towards some sort of goal, whether itβs personal or part of the system
Sometimes membership can expensive, and it is an investment of time. Both are well worth it. You will find that you are dually more confident, yet centered and humble at the same time.
