Today's the feast of St. Methodius I, 84th Patriarch of Constantinople. Originally a monk he was exiled for his iconophilic beliefs but after the death of the emperor a coup in the Byzantine royalty occurred in which the iconoclasts were deposed, and Methodius appointed patriarch.

St. Methodius said that an Ecumenical council can only exist with the authority of the pope. What would be the EO response?

So how do Orthodox Christians argue against this and suggest the pope isn't necessary?

TIL that Cyrillic (the alphabet used to write Russian) wasn't created by Greek monks Cyrill and Methodius. They created the Glagolitic script. A disciple of theirs created Cyrillic with a few Glagolitic letters.

The 1979 BCP commemorates SS. Cyril and Methodius today and not St. Valentine.
I'm not sure why that is. According to a cursory look at Wikipedia, this is not the case for most of the Anglican Communion.
I do kind of appreciate it, mostly because I find Cyril and Methodius to have a more interesting story, but also because I'm a curmudgeon.
