How easy is it to get around on the Mentawai Islands and Nias Island? Going to do geologic fieldwork.
Hey r/Indonesia,
I am planning a geologic fieldwork expedition on Sumatra and some of its western islands. I want to do research on the coasts north and south of Padang and also on Nias Island, Siberut Island, Sipora Island and the Pagai Islands. On the sumatran mainland and on Nias Island it seems like there is a well developed network of roads and access to the coast is good.
BUT: Siberut, Sipora and the Pagai Islands seem to be more difficult as the entire western half of the islands don't have any villages, roads or piers.
Is it possible to get around with boats? Do I have to buy a boat and sell it again after I leave, or is it best to hire a boat (with/without a captain)?
Any advice is welcome!
