#PROLOGUE

So, for the last 3 months I've been living in northern Italy (for the curious, I've documented some of that in story highlights). Being Maltese, winters back home are usually quite mild (around 10c and windy), so this was my first "proper" cold winter where I couldn't get away with just tee + jacket/coat on top as I usually do. Also this being Italy meant that on the whole, most people seemed to dress decently enough (you will never reach the suave of the Italian grandpas though - now those guys really know how to dress).

This meant that I had to adapt to the (actually) cold weather, whilst also not having the full potential of my entire wardrobe. Meaning that I had to pick and choose very carefully which pieces I was going to bring with me.

This is what I learned from this experience.

PS. My personal style leans on the "lazy luxury" side of things - think Haider Ackermann and Umit Benan. So it's a more casual, but still elevated take (an "undone elegance" of sorts) on classic menswear, with some modern streetwear elements thrown in.

PPS. Context: I'm in my mid 20s and work in a creative field (architect). Your mileage may vary.

#BUILDING A CAPSULE WARDROBE

The first step was to decide what to actually bring. Since I was constrained by luggage/weight, this meant that pieces had to be versatile, to allow for many different variations of fits. Pieces that only worked in very specific fits (or needed another specific piece to work) had to be left behind.

To make things easier, I keep track of my entire wardrobe in a spreadsheet (extremely nerdy). I don't think this is absolutely necessary, but when your wardrobe is as big as mine, one does need a way to somehow catalogue and keep track of what's being added/sold.

Here's what my capsule wardrobe ended up consisting of.

Definitely PU and the studs are a light-weight plastic than the studs on my auth Rockstud flats, but this isn’t at all noticeable when they’re worn. I'd consider these passable for auth on a night out. I assume these will start looking less passable after more use as the upper will wear differently to leather, but I haven’t reached this point yet with mine.

Backstory: I am newer to this group and I have indeed gotten repfluenced several times. When I saw the Teddy coat reviews from others I was enamored with how amazing the coat looked on everyone who bought it. One thing in common most ladies had were they were taller than me and the coat looked long on them. I was so concerned the coat would look oversized to the point where it looked like a toddler was trying on mom's coat lol. I contacted Max to ask for pricing, availability etc. He recommended based on my weight and height I get the M. I wanted to try the auth in stores so off to Max Mara I went! I tried on the M and it was absolutely swimming on me. Not only that but it was way too long. I tried on the S and again swimming. Finally the SA pulled the XS and it fit. However, it did not look the way I pictured, but I was confident with some chunky boots I would look great.

Full disclosure I am 5ft 2in and 160 pounds. My sis in law also tried it at she is 5ft and it looks great on her too!

I contacted Max again to relay which size worked best for me and he informed me the size was not 1 for 1. The sizes correlate to auth below. I also asked him to measure the jacket.

XS- 105cm coat length/ 50 sleeve length/137cm chest circumference/59cm shoulder width

S- 106cm coat length/ 51 sleeve length/139cm chest circumference/ 60cm shoulder width

M- 107cm coat length/ 52 sleeve length/141cm chest circumference/ 61cm shoulder width

I researched the sizing to try an see which one matched best with XS. I found the sizing for S and M but not XS. The sizing for S and M are here. Please be advised, I believe Max measured differently than the site did. I continued to search for the measurements and I could not find them. I decided to call a Max Mara store and asked if they could provide the measurements for the XS and they did! The measurements they provided aligned with the S better so I ordered that from Max. The coat came pretty fast and to date it is the best thing I own! I love it and I find excuses just to wear it. My fiancé and I now call the coat "the bear" in conversation.

I don't want to step on anybody's toes here, but the amount of non-dad jokes here in this subreddit really annoys me. First of all, dad jokes CAN be NSFW, it clearly says so in the sub rules. Secondly, it doesn't automatically make it a dad joke if it's from a conversation between you and your child. Most importantly, the jokes that your CHILDREN tell YOU are not dad jokes. The point of a dad joke is that it's so cheesy only a dad who's trying to be funny would make such a joke. That's it. They are stupid plays on words, lame puns and so on.
