Hamilton Food Bank Shut Down due to Being Non-essential

Note: Please see update at the bottom as this is now resolved.

Hello, first time poster in this sub, and I apologize if this post goes against the rules. I'm posting this to assist one of my relatives who volunteers to operate a small food bank.

It's a tenant run food bank at a City Housing Hamilton (community housing) building that has been shut down due to COVID restrictions imposed by the Emergency Operations Committee.

The specific regulation is regarding communal spaces in the building. Which would generally apply to non-essential communal spaces. E.g. party rooms. As this tenant run food bank is not city run it has been deemed non-essential.

The food bank has been operating for many years and also throughout all previous COVID restrictions. The food bank is restricted access to only tenants of the building. And protocols are in place to limit contact, and only volunteers are inside handing food to residents outside of the room.

Presently donated food is now locked away inaccessible to many food insecure residents. The building management is advising residents seek food at far away food banks and/or grocery stores. Both of which would increase potential COVID risk and is not feasible for many residents who are food insecure.

This policy being enforced did not take into consideration this situation and will result in a poorer outcomes against the spirit of the intention of rule.

Food Bank: Golden Hearts Food Cupboard Building: 226 Rebecca Hamilton

If you would like to help please reach out to Ward 2 Councillor, Jason Farr Jason.Farr@hamilton.ca

Update: Jason Farr has reached out to us. It sounds promising and we are hoping for a solution soon. Thank you so much every one. Please keep reaching out to him to keep this moving.

Final Update: The management at City Housing Hamilton has now verified that the food bank can reopen. Some details are still being worked out. But it's looking like a success! Thank you everyone who helped by reaching out! And thank you to Jason Farr for helping rectify this.

Short story about an astronaut, alien planet, lakes of food and starving alien creatures (King? Bradbury? Hamilton maybe?)

As title, the astronaut finds a planet with lakes of food and creatures starving and fighting to reach the food sources. Turns out the planet was an abandoned farm planet by an advanced civilisation who seeded it with creatures then didn't return. Was in a collection of shorts and possibly by Stephen King / Ray Bradbury / Peter F Hamilton (or I may have the author wrong). Cannot find it for the life of me. Anyone recognise this? (asking for another book request thread so I can reccomend it to a redditor)

Best soup or food for a cold that I could order delivery for near Hamilton Park?

I'm very sick with a cold, not covid, and I can't move so I'd love some good soup or other remedy type food I could get handed to me at the bottom of my walkup. Thanks. Back to sleep I go.

Which Stores & Restaurants in Hamilton Take Food Super, Super Seriously?

I'm watching Searching for Italy with Stanley Tucci right now (amazing!), and I'm totally inspired to up my cooking game. I love the care that the people on this show are putting into their food, in their homes or in a restaurant kitchen.

I mean like obsessive attention to detail and quality and ingredients, uncompromising, wanting to give you something nice and taking food seriously.

So two questions:

1) Which stores stock the most special of special ingredients? Like, if you want a really special lemon, where do you go? Top-quality sausage? Incredible mozzarella or feta? The best top-quality tofu? Great pasta? Really unique mushrooms? Like, I bought the most incredible feta I've ever had at the Aristos Greek market on King, for example, even though it was like $30/kg or something. And so on....

2) Which restaurants do this? I mean like obsessive attention to detail and quality and care with their food, where every plate is something made with care and craft and seriousness. It doesn't have to be crazy expensive - Maria's Tortas Jalisco is a great example, or Culantro (or Zum Linzer that was there before, which was so great), or 50 Pesos in Burlington, or Cafe Baffico, or Tomah, or The Pigeon (RIP!), or the bread from De La Terre (incredible!!). I might even put the Electric Diner or Synonym or maybe even Brux House in this category, too.

The opposite of this would a place like The French or Aberdeen Tavern or some of the places on King William, places that serve expensive food that seems like it would be this, but are actually kind of boring, and inconsistent, and seem more about signaling class status than providing daring, exciting food?

But I digress....any recommendations? Markets/stores/restaurants that take food super seriously?

Save Hamilton Community Food Cupboard

Hi everyone, I help out with Food Not Bombs in Newcastle and was hoping to spread awareness about the current situation we are facing right now. About a week ago, the local council wanted to talk to us about permits and all that for our presence and were wanting to talk to someone in charge. Within a week, we started brainstorming idea on how to go about all this, such as writing an open letter to the council or something like that. However, in a massive escalation of events, last night, 7-8 cops, a council representative, and 2 people from the transit authority were at the park waiting for us to show up and once we got there, they basically just started putting green stickers over the free shop saying they are going to take them away if we don’t within 14 days and we also worry about the future plans they will then have for FnB and all that it is we do.

Someone else from Newcastle has made a video explaining the situation and we also setup a petition. Would be amazing if you could sign it and share around the message, especially if you know anyone in Newcastle. We are not sure how to go forward from here but the petition is a start for now.
