what would be the best book on the gupta empire.

Detailing everything from the art and culture of the gupta era to the administrative structure and samudragupta's military conquests. the ones that i found on amazon were, The Gupta Empire by Radhakumud Mookerji, gupta empire by surya nandan prasad and Gupta empire by H.C Sharma Dharma Singh. Are any of these any good? I only have the time to read one book, would you recommend me one from the ones i mentioned above? Or some other book.

Any book suggestions about Classical India (Maurya and Gupta Empires)?

I’m slowly building myself a decent collection of history books and reading them in chronological order. I’ve been shopping on places like Amazon for Classical Indian history books but all they have are cheap >100 page summaries. Are there some good reads I can find?

Fall of Gupta Empire And The Reason behind it

After Skandagupta, his Vimata-son Purugupta ascended the throne in old age. Purugupta ruled from 467 AD to 473 AD. He introduced the archer type of gold coins. Dr. Raychaudhuri has considered Prakashaditya inscribed on the coins found from Bharsar as a secondary title of Purugupta or any of his immediate successors. Purugupta could not save the empire from disintegration. His uncle Govindagupta, who ruled in Malwa, became independent. Following him, other provinces also started trying to become independent. After that, there were many powerless kings who could not save the Gupta-kingdom from being destroyed. The last of the Gupta emperors were Kumaragupta (III) and Vishnugupta. Their last date is found around 570 AD. After this there is no mention of any king of the Gupta dynasty. Read full reason of fall

Reasons for the fall of the Gupta Empire

The Gupta emperors ruled from 275 AD to 550 AD with full power and energy. After that his decline started and around 570 AD his kingdom was completely destroyed. There were many reasons for the decline of the Guptas, some of the main reasons are as follows-

(1) Unqualified successor: The first reason for the decline of the Gupta Empire was that after the death of Skandagupta, the Gupta-emperors such as Purugupta, Narasimhagupta, Kumaragupta (II), Bhanugupta etc. were incompetent and powerless. They did not have the ability to keep the vast Gupta-kingdom safe. The security and strength of the centralized government depends on the competence of the emperor. Therefore, it was natural for the empire to disintegrate during the reign of incompetent rulers.

(2) Invasions of the Huns: The second reason for the decline of the Gupta Empire was the invasion of the Huns. Although Skandagupta successfully faced these attacks, the attacks of the Huns did not stop. These attacks increased further during the reign of the later weak Gupta-Emperors.
