Edda's Poem, Grímnismál and possible Valkyries Symbology

THEORY

There are few fans who know, but the author based the 13 Valkyries of the manga on Edda's poem, Grímnismál, so I made a detailed study of the poem and these Valkyries. Below is the poem:

Hrist and Mist the horn shall bear me Skeggöld and Skögul, Hlökk and Herfjötur, Hildi and Thrudi, Göll and Geirölul, Randgrid and Radgrid, and Reginleif, these bear beer to the Einherjar.

(For theory to work, I took Hilde out of the poem and put Brunhilde in her place)

For those unfamiliar with Norse mythology, the Einherjar, also known as “The Warriors of Odin”, are the dead warriors collected by the Valkyries to go to the palace of Valhalla, where they will feast until the last day of Ragnarok.

So, if you base the names of these Valkyries in the poem with the warriors brought to fight, you can see the pattern of choices (the Valkyries with (?) are Valkyries that have not yet appeared, or that do not have a representative:

(?) First Valkyrie, Brynhildr, "Battle Armor".

Second Valkyrie, Hrist, From the Old Norse Hrist (‘’balance”). – Sasaki Kojiro's Volünd.

Third Valkyrie, Þrúðr, “power”. – Raiden Tammemon's Volünd.

Fourth Valkyrie, Randgríðr, possibly “shield destroyer”. – Lu Bu's Volünd.

(?) Fifth Valkyrie, Skeggöld, refers to axe.

(?) Sixth Valkyrie, Skögul, "shaker" or possibly "high-towering".

Seventh Valkyrie, Reginleif, “Power-trace” or “Daughter of the Gods”. – Adam's Volünd.

(?) Eighth Valkyrie, Mist "Cloud" or "Fog".

(?) Ninth Valkyrie, Herfjötur, “host-fetter” or “fetter of the army”.

(?) Tenth Valkyrie, Ráðgríðr “Council-truce" or possibly "the bossy".

Eleventh Valkyrie, Hlökk “Noise, Battle”. – Jack's Volund.

(?) Twelfth, Geirölul, possibly meaning "one who advances with the spear".

(?) Thirteenth Valkyrie, Göll, "Tumult".

Based on this, we can “predict” the order, powers and Volünd of the remaining participants (Not necessarily the meaning of Valkyrie will be literal).

Sakata Kintoki - Will use Skeggöld as a Volünd, her name meaning "Axe" would fit perfectly with his character, who we know is the only one of the representatives to use an axe.

Nikola Tesla - Will use Skögul as Volünd, having his name meaning "high-towering" would be the only one with something related to electricity, which we know is Nikola's key word.

Simo Häyhä - Will use Mist as Volünd, having his name meaning "cloud" or "mist", would also fit with his camouflage used in life in war.

The 13th valkyries that appear in the series are apparently the same that appear in the poem "Grímnismál"(except for Brynhildr), so I made a list of the valkyries that are left to fight with the meaning of their names. I would like to know any theories you might have based on this. reddit.com/gallery/kpciv0

Grímnismál: 29-35

Hail all you sons of Heimdallr, raiders and rune masters, sages and shitposters, Valhalla-bros and Vegvisir-enthusiasts! In the last user survey, many of you expressed interest in a reading club. Well guess what. It's here! I sought counsel, I threw the lots, I might even have slaughtered a stallion or two, and the choice fell on Grímnismál.

The idea is that everybody can participate; all comments, contributions and questions are welcome.

29
Dike and Delta
and the two Bathtubs
these must Þórr wade through,
every day,
when he goes to give judgements,
at Yggdrasill's ash,
for the bridge of the Æsir,
blazes with flames,
the holy waters boil.

30
Glad and Golden,
Glowing and Gallop-Surging,
Silverlocks and Sinews,
Radiant and Hidden Hoof,
Goldlocks and Light Foot,
the Æsir ride these horses
every day,
when they go to give judgement,
at Yggdrasill's ash.

31
Three roots,
stretches in three directions,
under Yggdrasill's ash:
Hel dwells under one,
frost-giants under the second,
the men of mankind under the third.

32
Ratatǫskr is called the squirrel
who has to run
along Yggdrasill's ash:
the eagle's words
he must bring from above
and say to Niðhǫggr beneath.

33
There are also four stags,
they gnaw the highest branches
with thrown-back necks;
Dead One and Sleeping One,
Downy Beach and Door Stubborn.

34
More serpents
lie under Yggdrasill's ash,
than any dumb dolt can imagine:
Land-animal and Moor-animal,
they are Grave-Wolf's sons,
Grey-back and Grave-Digger,
Twister and Sleep Inducer,
I think must forever
erode the tree's branches.

35
Yggdrasill's ash
endures more suffering,
than men know:
a stag bites it above,
and its side is rotting,
Niðhǫggr pierces it below.

Trembler and Mist
I wish would bring me a horn,
Axe-Age and Demon,
War and Strength,
Clash and War-Fetter,
Clangour and Spear-Battle,
Shield-Destroyer and Counsel-Destroyer,
and Ruler's Heir,
they bring the einherjar ale.

37
Early-Awake and All-Swift,
they shall drag from here,
slim steeds, the sun;
under their shoulders,
the gentle gods have concealed,
Æsir, Cooling-Iron.

38
Cool he is called,
who stands before the Sun,
a shield for the shining god,
Mountain and sea,
I know will burn,
if he falls away.

39
Mockery is called the wolf,
who follows the bright-faced god
to the protecting woods;
another is called Hater,
he is the son of Fame-Wolf,
he shall run before the bright bride of heaven.

40
From Ymir's flesh
the Earth was formed,
and from his blood the sea,
mountains from his bones,
trees from his hair,
and the sky from his skull.

41
And from his brows
the gentle gods made
Midgard for the sons of men;
and from his brain
the hard-minded
clouds were all created.

42
He has Ullr's favour
and that of all the gods,
who first seizes the flames;
for worlds are opened
to the sons of the gods,
when they lift off the kettles.

43
The sons of Ívaldi
went in early days
to shape Skíðblaðnir,
the best of ships,
for shining Freyr,
Njǫrðr's benificient son.

Yggdrasil's ash

Skíðblaðnir of ships,
Óðinn of gods,
Sleipnir of horses,

Bragi of skalds,
Hábrók of hawks,
and Garmr of hounds.

45
My face I have now raised
before the sons of the victory-gods,
by this desired saving wakens,
for all the gods
who in shall come,
on Ægir's benches,
at Ægir's feast.

46
I was called Mask,
I was called Way-Weary,
Martial and Helmet-Bearer,
Clever and Third,
Lean and Beloved,
Hel-Blind and High;

47
True and Changeable,
and Truth-Guesser,
Army-Glad and Thruster,
Failing-Eye, Blazing-Eye,
Evil-Doer, Concealer,
Mask and Masked One,
Experienced Seducer and Much-Wise.

48
Drooping-Hat, Drooping-Beard,
Victory-Father, Thruster,
All-Father, Slain-Father,
Attacking Rider and God of Burdens:
by one name,
I was never known,
ever since I travelled among people.

49
They called me Masked One at Geirrødr's,
and Gelding at Ásmundr's,
and then Keeler,
when I dragged the sledge,
Thriver at the assembly,
Killer in battle,
Desired and Boomer,
Just As High and Shield-Shaker,
Staff-Wielder and Grey-Beard among the gods.

50
Spear-Wielder and Spear-Carrier,
I was called at Søkkmímir's,
and I deceived the ancient giant,
when I became
the killer
of Miðvitnir's famed son.

51
You are drunk, Geirrøðr!
You've drunk too much;
Much are you bereft of,
when you lose my support,
and that of the einherjar,
and Óðinn's favour.

52
Much I told you,
but little you remember:
friends have deceived you;
I see my friend's
sword lying
all drenched in blood.

53
The edge-weary slain
The Terrible One will take now,
I know your life is ended;
the dísir are hostile,
now you can see Óðinn;
get close to me if you can!

54
Óðinn I am called now,
The Terrible One I was called before,
they called me Sweller before that,
Watchful and Mountain-Dweller,
Hanger and Tumult-God,
Götalander and Gelding among the gods,
Twister and Sleep-Inducer,
I think all of these,
comes from me alone.

King Geirrøðr sat with a half drawn sword across his knees. But when he heard, that it was Óðinn who had come

The sixth is called Þrymheimr,
where Þjazi lived,
the gruesome giant;
but now Skaði inhabits,
the god's shining bride,
her father's ancient homestead.

12
Breiðablik is the seventh
where Baldr
has raised a hall around him.
In that land,
I know lie,
the fewest fearsome staves.

13
Himinbjǫrg is the eight
where Heimdall,
they say, rules the sanctuaries;
there the sentry of the gods,
drinks in a serene house,
glad, the good mead.

14
Fólkvangr is the ninth,
and there Freyja arranges
the choice of seats in the hall;
half of the slain
she chooses every day,
and half Óðinn owns.

15
Glitnir is the tenth,
with gold it is buttressed
and in the same way silver-thatched;
and there Forseti
is found most of the days
and quiets all quarrels.

16
Nóatún is the eleventh,
and there Njǫrðr,
has raised a hall around him.
The lord of men,
lacking all fault,
rules the high timbered halidoms.

17
Thicket grows
and tall grass,
and wood, in Víðars land;
and there the boy proclaims
from the mare's back,
bold, that he will avenge his father.

18
Andhrímnir
lets in Eldhrímnir
Sæhrímnir stew
the best of bacon,
though few men know,
with what the einherjar are fed.

19
Geri and Freki
are fed by the battle-seasoned
famed Father of Hosts;
but on wine alone,
the weapon-magnificient
Óðinn always lives.

20
Huginn and Muninn
fly every day
over the wide world;
For Huginn I fear
that he will not come back,
but I worry more about Muninn.

My Match-up Prediction based on the Names of the Thirteen Valkyries listed in Grímnismál

Spoiler Alert for one of the Valkyries, I guess.

Brunhilde – “battle armor”

To clarify, Brunhilde herself is not mentioned in Grímnismál, but it is understandable for the author to have her take Hilde's place due to her own potential plot device. The Brun part means Armor, while the Hilde part means Battle. Brunhilde is the only valkyrie with a story of her own, and it ain't pretty. Additionally, it seems in a rendition of the story, her name is just Hild, but called Brunhilde. We can say that Brunhilde herself holds a grudge against the gods because of what had happened in the story, though we will have to wait and see what kind of rendition the author will bring to the table. It might be tragic love, or something else. But what we are interested right now is her partner, and as a suit of armor, I think she will be paired with Raiden Tameemon. He'd be sumo wrestling wearing armor! Like Armor King from Tekken! That's the only connection I can think of, especially since I don't think there are carried weapons in sumo. As for the opponent God, I'm thinking of Odin right now. It's kinda fitting for Brunhilde to fight Odin, and not to mention Tameemon himself being a giant of a wrestler, which will make him an equivalent to a jotun even!

Geirahodr – “spear-fighter,” “spear of battle”

While there are several Valkyries with Geir in their names out there, Geirahodr is the only Geir in Grímnismál. So there we have it, Geir and Had, Spear and Battle. Her Volund is clearly going to be the king of weapons, the weapon used by a myriad soldiers in the past, the humble spear. And it is obvious who's going to carry her. It will definitely be King Leonidas. And as the youngest (and possibly last) Valkyrie, it is fitting, not as much as Lu Bu (it's a halberd, but still), but fitting nonetheless. But for Spartans, it's not just the spear. Leonidas must also have a shield, and there is a shield – Svalinn, a cold shield that stands before the Sun, protecting our world from burning. In a way, it is comparatively our ozone layer. And if Leonidas must hold the shield against the Sun, then his opponent must be Apollo. Hell, maybe it'll end up like 300 and he throws Geir at Apollo or something.

Randgridr – “shield destroyer”

We all know her. She destroyed Thor's Járngreipr. While Rand means shield, I have no clue about gridr. There is a Randgrith which means “shield bearer,” and Randgríðr which means “shield of peace.” I s

Well guess what. It's here! I have sought counsel, I have thrown the lots, I might even have slaughtered a stallion or two, and the choice has fallen on Grímnismál.

#The idea is that everybody can participate; no comment or question is too small. If you want to see more original in-depth content on r/Norse, then get in here.

So what is Grímnismál? I'll let wikipedia give a tl;dr:

> Grímnismál (Sayings of Grímnir) is one of the mythological poems of the Poetic Edda. It is preserved in the Codex Regius manuscript and the AM 748 I 4to fragment. It is spoken through the voice of Grímnir, one of the many guises of the god Odin. The very name suggests guise, or mask or hood. Through an error, King Geirröth tortured Odin-as-Grímnir, a fatal mistake, since Odin caused him to fall upon his own sword. The poem is written mostly in the ljóðaháttr metre, typical for wisdom verse.

(source).

To avoid any weird copyright issues, the translation will be my own. My Old Norse is admittedly a bit rusty and pales in comparison to that of many frequent r/Norse users; some of them even get paid to translate and publish Old Norse texts! I welcome any gentle corrections and vicious personal attacks.

Text edition:

Gustav Neckel's, found right here.

Translation:

Of king Hrauðung's sons.

King Hrauðungr had two sons: one was named Agnarr, the other Geirrøðr. Agnarr was ten winters old and Geirrøðr eight winters old. The two of them rowed out in a boat with their fishing lines to catch small fish. The wind drove them out to sea. In the dark of night they wrecked at the shore, came ashore and met a cotter. They stayed there through the winter. The wife took care of Agnarr, and the husband took care of Geirrøðr and gave him counsel.

In the spring the man gave them a ship. When the wife led them to the beach, the man spoke in private with Geirrøðr. They had favourable winds and came to their fathers landing-place. Geirrøðr stood at the bow of the ship. He leaped up on land, pushed the boat out and said: "Go you now where evil may take you

Odin: A Study

Revised 01/17/22

Future additions and revisions to the postings in thread will be made as they are discovered. The kennings section in particular is woefully lacking due to the immense effort involved in verifying and sourcing the innumerable bynames of Odin. Many lists of these exist, mostly unsourced - and mostly inaccurate. Wikipedia is, as per usual, the most egregious offender. If you're a fellow kenning collector and you know where they came from, please contribute!

The opening post will consist of Etymology and Theonyms below. Scroll through the thread for Toponyms, (Some) Associations, Sources, (Some) Kennings and Bynames, Excerpts (I, II, III), and Related Concepts. Reddit's character limit required that this study be broken up into several posts.

SERIOUS: This subreddit needs to understand what a "dad joke" really means.

I don't want to step on anybody's toes here, but the amount of non-dad jokes here in this subreddit really annoys me. First of all, dad jokes CAN be NSFW, it clearly says so in the sub rules. Secondly, it doesn't automatically make it a dad joke if it's from a conversation between you and your child. Most importantly, the jokes that your CHILDREN tell YOU are not dad jokes. The point of a dad joke is that it's so cheesy only a dad who's trying to be funny would make such a joke. That's it. They are stupid plays on words, lame puns and so on. There has to be a clever pun or wordplay for it to be considered a dad joke.

Again, to all the fellow dads, I apologise if I'm sounding too harsh. But I just needed to get it off my chest.

If it needs a NSFW tag it's not a dad joke. There should just be a NSFW puns subreddit for that.

When I got home, they were still there.

I dislike karma whores who make posts that imply it's their cake day, simply for upvotes.

I won't be doing that today!

I did it, I finally did it. After 4 years and 92 days I went from being a father, to a dad.

This morning, my 4 year old daughter.

Daughter: I'm hungry

Me: nerves building, smile widening

Me: Hi hungry, I'm dad.

She had no idea what was going on but I finally did it.

Thank you all for listening.

Grímnismál: 25-28

Hail all you sons of Heimdallr, raiders and rune masters, sages and shitposters, Valhalla-bros and Vegvisir-enthusiasts! In the last user survey, many of you expressed interest in a reading club. Well guess what. It's here! I sought counsel, I threw the lots, I might even have slaughtered a stallion or two, and the choice fell on Grímnismál.

The idea is that everybody can participate; all comments, contributions and questions are welcome.

26
Eikþyrnir is called the stag,
who stands on Host-Father's hall
and bites off Lærað's branches:
drops from his antlers
drip into Hvergelmir;
from there all rivers run.

27
Long and Wide, Aggressive and Savage,
Cool and Battle-keen,
Rushing and Mighty-Speaker.
Rhine and Running,
Gabbler and Gaper,
Old Lady and Spear-tumbling,
they flow around the god's hoard,
Roarer and Dwindler,
Swelling and Sloping,
Greed and Battle-bold.

28
One is called Dvina,
a second Way-swift,
a third People-Taker,
Useful and Wet,
Bold and Billow,
Fearful and Storm,
Swallower and She-Wolf,
Wide and Hope,
Bad and Shore,
Clangour and Lightning,
they flow close to men,
and flow from here to Hel.

21
Þund roars
The Folk-wolf's fish
frolics in the river;
The river-stream
seems too strong
to cross for the rejoicing slain

22
Slain's Gate it's called,
that stands on the plain
holy, before the hallowed doors;
Ancient is that gate,
though few men know,
how it's latched and locked.

23
Five hundred doors
and fourty
I think there are in Valhǫll;
Eight hundred einherjar
walk through each door
when they go to fight the wolf.

24
Five hundred floors
and fourty
I think Bilskírnir has in all;
Of the residences,
I know are roofed,
My kinsman's, I know, is the mightiest.

25
Heiðrun is called the goat
who stands on Host-Father's hall
and bites off Lærað's branches:
She will fill a cask
of the clear mead,
that drink can not run dry.

You are hot, fire,
and too large by far:
get away from me, flames!
My cloak is singed,
though I carry it aloft,
my coat catches fire before me.

Eight nights,
I sat here between the fires,
no man offered me food,
but Agnarr,
who alone shall rule,
son of Geirrøðr, the land of Goths.

Blessed shall you be, Agnarr
since Veratýr bids you
blessed be:
for a single drink
you shall never
receive better reward.

Holy is the land,
that I see lying
near æsir and elves.
In Þrúðheimr
Þórr shall be,
until the ruling gods are ripped away.

Ýdalir is called
the place where Ullr
has raised a hall around him.
Álfheimr Freyr
in ancient times
was given by the gods as tooth-gift.

There is a third homestead
a hall thatched with silver
by the gentle gods;
Válaskjálf it is called,
skillfully crafted for himself
by the deity in ancient days.

The fourth is called Søkkvabekkr,
and there can cool waves
crash overhead.
Óðinn and Sága drink
there every day,
gladly from golden cups.

Glaðsheimr is the fifth:
there the gold-bright
Valhǫll widely stretches;
and there Hroptr
chooses every day
weapon-dead warriors.

Much is obvious
for those who come to Óðinn
to see his hall:
with spear-shafts the house is rafted,
with shields the hall is roofed,
mail-coats are strewn on the seats.

Much is obvious
for those who come to Óðinn
to see his hall:
A warg hangs
west of the door,
and an eagle droops down above it.
