Glutamine or caprylic acid first?

I recently began making changes to improve my gut health, as I’ve been diagnosed with candida. I stopped drinking coffee first thing in the morning and instead eat a small breakfast. I know one of the next step is to use caprylic acid to kill off candida, but should I start with glutamine to rebuild cell walls first or maybe stack the two together?

Thoughts on the dangers/ risks associated with glutamine supplementation?

I have been reading about the benefits of l-glutamine for gut health and muscle recovery but have also come across some interesting articles which point to its potential for neurotoxicity and association with psychiatric symptoms, schizophrenia, and encephalopathy. Can anyone help to break down what the true risk for this is with supplementation?

Note: Very clearly not a biochemist so a lot of it is over my head… just a nurse trying to make sense of some articles πŸ˜…

L-Glutamine supplementation has significantly improved my symptoms

I’ll keep this short, but holy cow taking 800mg before every meal has almost neutralized my heart burn. I’m in awe, I haven’t felt this good in years. I randomly came across it being mentioned on the web, thought β€œwhat the hell a bottle is $9, worth a shot”. I’m not kidding, I don’t have the pain, the food intolerance, night time choking, cough etc. My issues have disappeared overnight, I’m almost in tears writing this because I’ve been in pain for so long. I’m not saying it’s a cure all but it has worked for me. My stools are regular and healthy, I can eat MORE of low irritant foods (I workout religiously, this is important).

L-Glutamine has seemingly decreased my supplement sensitivty

I'm the kind of person who takes 200mg of magnesium and get's extremely tired, takes some b12 and gets wired, drinks a sip of coffee and bounces off the walls, just extremely sensitive to supplements and subtances.

I began supplementing L-glutamine 2 weeks ago as I've been on a gut health kick and I've been testing out some old supplements and whatnot and have noticed that I am no longer extremely sensitive to things... I can take 2mg of b12 and feel nothing, a cup of coffee is just an average experience now...

I know the literature is strong showing L-glutamine is essential in repairing intestinal lining, I wonder if I have been suffering from poor intestinal health for quite some time leading to sensitivity?

I am not sure of the MOA, but its very interesting. Going to have to re-analyze my ridiculous collection of supplements and try a couple things again.

Anyone tried L glutamine to help heal their gut, which in turn can possibly cure their GERD?

I’m about to try L glutamine powder from the Vitamin Shoppe. I’ve heard so many good things about it. My only problem is because it crosses the brain barrier it supposed to have a potential to mess with your mood. Trigger things like anxiety for some and so forth. I’m very prone to anxiety but I’m hoping once I stick to a lower dose it won’t bother me.

Glutamine intolerance

Does anybody else suffer with glutamine intolerance? I take b6 for GAD65 and 67, shilajit, kava, (l theanine soon as I've just cut out matcha and caffiene) to boost GABA. I don't tolerate probiotics so I just get SBO's from shilajit and consume prebiotics.

I can't eat nutritional yeast without flaring up with over stimulation, headaches, restlessness, fatigue, gut issues. It could be that it's the yeast as well but I get the same issue with nori.

This could be a direct result of brain trauma as I had an NDE a few years ago and glutumate storm is pretty nasty and I didn't have calcium channel signalling vitamins which would have prevented calcium destroying loads of cells after glutamate pushes it out during the excitoxicity phase of the brain trauma response either before or in tandem with the cytokine storm and calcium rushes back into the cell causing necrosis. I am fortunate to be alive but my suffering is still extreme.

Just wondering if anybody has the same issue as it seems clinically relevant that those on the spectrum and those medicated as a child on ritalin and concerta to have depleted gaba too.

Are L-glutamine and collagen enough?

Currently on 5K mg of L-glutamine and 10g of Collagen per day.

I can’t tolerate anything elseβ€”like bone broth and fermented foods make me extremely ill (the latter more so).

Above all, I suspect SIBO due to low stomach acid that got worse after the COVID vaccine. So anything you can recommend for SIBO if these two supplements aren’t enough will help a ton.

My stomach is so so sensitive after years of medications and NSAIDs that I’m terrified to take strong acid-inducing supplements. Maybe digestive enzymes?

Also, L-glutamine doesn’t seem like a forever supplement. How long did you take it before you got results? I’m guessing 3+ months …

Thanks!

L-Glutamine and Ammonia?

I apologize if this is the wrong place to post this.

I've been supplementing with 5 g of l-glutamine per day on an empty stomach for about 3 to 4 days to heal my gut due to colitis (general diagnosis I got from my ER visit). A couple of months ago, I started having dull abdominal pain in the RUQ that's now become more sharp. The dull and occasional sharp pains also appear in the LUQ and LLQ during and after meals. Sometimes, I get a mild burning sensation around these abdominal quadrants as well. I suspect that my colitis might've arose from antibiotics that I took for the apparent UTIs that I had (Cephalexin and Nitrofurantoin).

For the first 2 days since supplementing with l-glutamine, my colitis symptoms seemed to have improved, although in the last couple of days, I started getting a mild headache. This morning, my headache got a little stronger, more so after breakfast. Maybe I had a bit too much salt, or not enough. I'm also a little more anxious.

Could what I am experiencing be caused by raised ammonia levels due to l-glutamine supplementation, at 5 g per day? On another note, I've been going through severe insomnia (over 4 months) and a lot of physical and mental stress and anxiety, so I'm wondering if my headache and anxiousness could be due to these instead.

Any suggestions on how to heal my gut from here if I should stop l-glutamine? I'm also taking a probiotic and eating a modified diet. If it's possible that my ammonia levels are raised, how can I reduce it?

Serum glutamate and glutamine-to-glutamate ratio are associated with coronary angiography defined coronary artery disease. (Pub Date: 2021-09-29)

https://doi.org/10.1016/j.numecd.2021.09.021

https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/34906414

Abstract

BACKGROUND AND AIMS

Serum concentrations of glutamate (Glu), Glutamine (Gln) and Gln/Glu ratio have consistently been reported to be associated with metabolic disorders and diabetes. The aim of this study was to examine the relationship between these metabolites with the presence of coronary artery disease (CAD) and CAD severity in Chinese patients.

METHODS AND RESULTS

2970 Chinese patients undergoing coronary angiography (CAG) in Beijing Hospital were enrolled. Baseline demographics and medical history data was recorded by questionnaires. Serum Glu and Gln concentrations were analyzed by isotope dilution liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS). Statistical analysis showed that CAD patients had significantly higher levels of Glu and lower Gln/Glu ratios compared with non-CAD control group. Glu was significantly positively associated with body mass index (BMI), fasting blood glucose (FBG), triglycerides (TG), creatinine (Crea), and uric acid (UA), and negatively associated with high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C), while inverse associations between Gln/Glu ratio and these risk factors were observed. Glu levels increased and Gln/Glu decreased with the increase of CAD severity as represented by either the number of stenosed vessels or the Gensini scores. Logistic regression analysis demonstrated that, after adjusting for smoking status, obesity or overweight, hypertension, dyslipidemia, diabetes, stroke and family history of premature CAD, high Glu level and low Gln/Glu ratio were positively associated with CAG defined CAD as well as CAD severity expressed by Gensini score.

CONCLUSIONS

We identified Glu and Gln/Glu ratio independently associated with CAG defined CAD as well as CAD severity in Chinese patients undergoing CAG.

L-Glutamine found in BCAA workout powder makes me hate alcohol.

I was on a break at work and had a conversation about how big this guys muscles was, the guy suggested taking BCAA powder, which is a bunch of amino acids that aid muscle growth and some other stuff. I bought some straight after work and as I got home I lifted some weights and yes it helped me lift for a bit longer. But I also noticed a strange thing happen to me 2 or 3 days after taking it daily. I completly forgot about alcohol and I was offerd a night out drinking and I replied ehh no thanks and thought all of a sudden, what? why did I say that? I then started thinking why that is? I started googleing BCAA and alcohol and as it turns out L-Glutamine reduces cravings. The powder I currently have has14706mg inside of it. Research it for yourselves, it feels so weird to not care about having a drink. Its like magic. Hopefuly it helps someone else out 🀞
