Did George Seurat do any background "washes" on his canvas before he did his "pointillism paintings"?
I understand that if he wanted to paint a particular object green he would paint dots of blue and yellow to create the illusion of green. And that if he wanted to paint a dark part on this object he could use a complimentary colour such as red for the shadow. So basically the entire object would consist of blue and yellow dots and the dark part of the object would consists of blue, yellow and red dots.
I'm just wondering did he block out the objects in his paintings with solid colours or maybe a wash before applying the dots? Or did he begin with the dots straight away?

Georges Seurat's 1886 painting "A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte" depicts a French aristocrat standing above what looks like a pet monkey. Did wealthy French people of that time have regular access to monkeys? Was this common practise?
