The article says that voluntary areas designated for protest are a thing in Canada. But are mandatory protest cages like there are in the United States a violation of the Canadian charter or something else?
Are the Time, Place And Manner of speech protected in Canada unlike how they aren't in the United States?
I had an idea of how we can turn reddit into a more pro-free-speech area. It can start with small subs, and get bigger. So, what we do is set up a standard for what "free speech" means in terms of how a sub is moderating (no ideological moderation, no power-tripping moderators removing options they don't like, no rules against so-called "hate speech", etc).
Then we start approaching subs that might be amenable to free speech with an offer, we will "certify" your sub as supporting free speech if it follows the free speech principles outlines in our terms - then they can put in their header a badge something like "this sub supports free speech". As long as they follow it, they can keep using it.
For subs that are heavily biased / ideologically moderated and will never follow free speech guidelines (for example, r/politics), we should create a free speech mirror of that sub with FS at the end. Anyone who wants to discuss that sub's topic in a free speech environment can go to the free speech version of it - r/politics_fs . As redditors see that the _fs subs suck less than the censored versions, they will migrate over to the free speech version where they can post and say whatever they want. Over time, I think we can generate a large number of _fs or free speech certified subs, which will bring attention to the issue of censorship on reddit, and give the people on reddit who do support free speech and an uncensored discussion of a wide variety of topics a place to go.
"****** college has a free speech zone." When I heard my professor say this my immediate thought was, "Just a zone? My right to free speech is only protected in a specific area on campus?" Honestly I was taken aback and a little bit horrified.
Doesn't the thought of free speech being limited to only certain areas seem a little bit dystopian?
I recognize there is nuance to the situation. We have the second amendment AND gun free zones. I also wouldn't argue against a policy banning disruptive protests inside classrooms during class times.
The number one worst thing you can do is call them names, interact and try to "own" them. The only reason these people come is to get attention. You yelling back is the best thing that can possibly happen in their minds.
So some friends and I noticed we can checkout PA speakers, a projector and and projector screen from ISU. What would be the worst that could happen if we set up at like 4:30 and watched adult content in the free speech zone? Under the chains of oppression?
