SERIOUS: This subreddit needs to understand what a "dad joke" really means.

I don't want to step on anybody's toes here, but the amount of non-dad jokes here in this subreddit really annoys me. First of all, dad jokes CAN be NSFW, it clearly says so in the sub rules. Secondly, it doesn't automatically make it a dad joke if it's from a conversation between you and your child. Most importantly, the jokes that your CHILDREN tell YOU are not dad jokes. The point of a dad joke is that it's so cheesy only a dad who's trying to be funny would make such a joke. That's it. They are stupid plays on words, lame puns and so on. There has to be a clever pun or wordplay for it to be considered a dad joke.

Again, to all the fellow dads, I apologise if I'm sounding too harsh. But I just needed to get it off my chest.

Columbia 3L AMA

Hey LSA, hope some acceptance waves are incoming for y'all. This sub basically carried me through my own admission cycle, so I'm happy to try to answer any questions you might have about admissions, law school, careers, or anything.

I am wrapping up my last semester at CLS. I'll try to be pretty open. I'm a first-gen, public interest student headed into my dream job in public international law after graduation. I went to a very low rank public school for undergrad. During law school, I did moot court, journal, clinic, worked for a judge, published a lot, and did a ton of criminal defense and human rights work. I ended up with really solid grades. I'm currently interviewing for clerkship for a couple years down the line and have plans to shift to academia.

Overall, I loved my time in law school but there are real issues with CLS too. Some top-level thoughts:

  • Columbia is packed with brilliant students and professors. Because the law school is large, you'll need to intentionally build relationships with professors for them to really get to know you. Pre-pandemic there was a lot of social events to build community. That is only starting to come back this year, which I know has led to some 1/2Ls feeling isolated.
  • Morningside Heights is a fantastic neighborhood to live in. It feels more residential than the rest of the city, but the energy of Harlem and midtown are just a hop away. My best hint: the Foodtown by campus won't tell you but you can use both the loyalty card and the Columbia student discounts. Oh, and live in grad housing not law school housing.
  • Public Interest at CLS is a mixed bag of fantastic things and huge shortcomings. The PI community is really solid, there are a lot of official and student resources floating around, small PI numbers mean a lot of individual support, the in-house post-grad fellowships are top notch, CLS' LRAP is second only to Yale's. But the admin is far more interested in keeping a clear assembly line to BigLaw than encouraging PI, the PI career office can be really unorganized and straight up not notice some PI students, the pressure to go to BigLaw is powerful.
  • While I never came near BigLaw firms, almost all my friends went that route. From my observations, you'd basically need to lack a pulse to not end up at a top firm if you want it.

Happy to answer anything and everything.
