What is the emic view of shame-honor based cultures?

From what I understand of this concept, in guilt-innocence-based cultures (like the US), what prevents people from doing something wrong is an inherent sense of guilt. And in shame-honor-based cultures (like Japan), what prevents people from doing something wrong is how others, or society in general, will view them. And that people will commonly do things that are wrong as long as they are very sure they won't get caught. I would never cheat on a test, because I would feel very guilty...regardless if I get caught or not. But in a shame culture, people won't feel any guilt for cheating at all, as long as they're careful. Correct me if I'm wrong!

To my Western mind, it seems to me that guilt cultures are more sincere, more true, and that shame cultures are shallow, caring only about appearances. But this is probably cultural bias! So I'm wondering how do shame cultures feel about the fact they're shame cultures? Do they find the whole thing insincere and/or out-dated, or do they think it's better than guilt cultures?

Something I've been wondering about for a while. Thank you for the insight!

Sigil of SAINT ETIC

In 2006, an occultforums user named Qryztufre created a servitor he called SAINT ETIC--later acronymized to Servitor for Abecedarian Instruction and Neophyte Training in EveryThing Involved with Chaos (magic)--designed as a patient, helpful, and knowledgeable guide for new magicians.

His original sigil is, as of right now, is still the only one easily accessible online--SNTC + SQRL in the shape of a squirrel.

Qryztufre's SAINT ETIC sigil

His color is purple and Saturday is his day. He likes offerings of dried fruit and nuts. As my gift to SAINT ETIC, I spent some time earlier this week on a redesign of his sigil, and to the best of my ability I have remained faithful to the structure of the original--I have combined strokes, but the structure of the original is unchanged.

An offering to SAINT ETIC

Here, as a suggestion for anyone interested, is the stroke order that worked best for me by the time I was done developing the sigil and could write it easily.

Stroke order for the SAINT ETIC sigil. Pen angle is 45ยฐ with a flat nib.

Crescat eundo.

-ic vs -etic suffix

Iโ€™ve been pondering on this for a few days and my Google fu has failed me, so Iโ€™m turning to you lot for answers. A telepath is telepathic and they have telepathy, a psychopath is psychopathic and are experiencing psychopathy. But an empath with lots of empathy can be empathic or empathetic, while those stricken with apathy will be simply apathetic. Apathic gives me red squiggles so Iโ€™m trusting my iPhone in telling me that itโ€™s not a word, and similarly, is one stricken with apathy then an apath? This is all so confusing.

Whatโ€™s the reason for the extra syllable, and what rule or rules determine the structure of the word?

Level Analysis - Paper Mario's "darkest" level.

Catastrophe, extermination, attempted murder, selfishness, revenge, greed, and sacrifice.

A level that appears to be outwardly cheerful and happy, a beautiful landscape full of beautiful characters, would go on to be one of the series darkest levels (both figuratively and literally) in terms of the situation and the decisions of it's inhabitants and invaders.

Flower Fields, from 2000's Paper Mario on the Nintendo 64.

Let's start with some surface-level analysis. There is a machine that forms clouds that has been placed in Flower Fields, something so intense that 'the' Sun (or just Sun because it's a sentient being) can't even be in the sky. In the subsequent chaos, Huff N. Puff ordered the theft of the Water Stone which dries up a spring providing a vital source of water for the fields. In this individual level, Bowser's boss minion Huff N. Puff is systematically trying to eradicate the inhabitants of the region by cutting off both their food and water resources. This while he constantly watches the slow apocalypse descend on the fields with pleasure up in the clouds.

Almost all of the key inhabitants are practically helpless, the peaceful ones literally can't even move for the most part. There were no cries for help, no signs of what was going on here in the other parts of the kingdom. Even if they could call for help, the only way to get there is to collect and plant 4 Magic Seeds together around a particular arch. Seeds that are scattered around the Mushroom Kingdom in often very remote places. Everyone in Flower Fields was basically a sitting duck and Mario would just so happen to walk into the situation like that Donald Glover meme.

This is not something Huff N. Puff had to do for his own survival, this is not something he has to do at all. His job was to protect the captured star spirit and he was pretty safe in the clouds. Clearly he's unaware of the beanstalk, otherwise out of all the things to steal the Magical Bean would have been a primary target. Actually the chaos that ensues due to this artificial disaster allows Mario to forge relationships with the flower residences that subsequently provide him with the aid Mario would need to reach Huff N. Puff. With that, the flowers themselves are an interesting element.

In the order you typically meet them, there are Tolielip,

Christopher Wallis on the common ground of Shaiva Tantra and Vajrayana Buddhism

One more post today.

This is a fascinating, scholarly article by Christopher Wallis, a Sanskritist and scholar/practitioner in the Shaiva Tantra tradition. In it, he examines the shared ground of both Saiva and Buddhist tantra traditions.

I think understanding the "etic" (as opposed to "emic") histories of a tradition is really helpful. I think if anyone is looking at how to "do" vajrayana outside of, for instance, Tibetan cultural frameworks and the guru system as it exists now as an institution .... I think those people would do really well to look at the pre-Tibetan roots of vajrayana.

And looking there inescapably offers the opportunity to see how much influence tantric buddhism received from its neighbouring traditions (and influenced it in return). In my experience, coming into contact with this material and these understandings opened up a lot of things for me.

Just to speak from within my own experience, it was one catalyst and one influence (among a number of factors, including what my own body and head were telling me) that I didn't identify as a buddhist anymore.

But I'm not sharing this with the intent to change anyone's fundamental views or commitments. I'm interested in people's lives and spirituality flourishing in healthy ways that supports their functioning and a healthier human community. If that takes Buddhist forms for people, cool!

I do think that understanding vajrayana's roots can help loosen attachments to one particular tradition or lineage, and in the specific case of Mukpo and Trungpa and Shambhala, that might be a healthy thing.

Is it high time for an overhaul of the distinctive features set based on radically different principles?

Now that I've lured you in with the clickbait title, please let me convince you that this is a good idea, or feel free to convince me otherwise :) (Also, this totally isn't an attempt at venting my frustration at working with distinctive features, for those who are wondering.)

Quick background for those who weren't aware: Distinctive features in phonology were first introduced by Jakobson, Fant and Halle in Preliminaries to Speech Analysis, though the features used in the later Sound Patterns of English are the basis for the most common set of features used today. Most modern charts seem to be built by modifying the chart in Bruce Hayes' intro to phonology.

The major characteristics of the features would be, to my understanding:

  • These features are defined phonetically and, since SPE, have been almost exclusively defined with reference to articulation, not acoustics (or perception).
  • These features are binary (linguists have considered a return to introducing privative features at point, but this doesn't seem to be reflected in most standard feature charts).
  • These features purport to be universal.
  • These features aim at producing elegant descriptions of particular languages.
  • Combining the two points above this one, this means that the feature set tries to be the simplest possible set that can still capture all contrasts, phonotactic patterns and alternations that occur crosslinguistically.

These characteristics were thought to be features (no pun intended) rather than bugs when they were first introduced. However, from a modern perspective, this seems to have the disadvantage of confounding emic and etic analyses. The way the features are proposed, they are supposed to be applicable to the emic description of all languages in the sense that all phonological systems are intended to be described using a subset of these features. But at the same time, it is defined etically, and different feature sets used by different languages are thought to be commensurate.

The conceptual issue of confounding emic and etic levels does not come without practical consequences for both levels. At an emic level, it is not always clear that this feature set is good for describing all languages. For example, Shimoji (2007) has a class called 'resonant' that doesn't seem 100% equivalent to sonorants, as it's implied that one of the phonemes can be realised with some frication. So if one

Critical Thinking and Anthropology

So, I always enjoyed my courses in college with anthropology because our professor pointed out errors in our thinking about particular topics and challenged us to think in different ways about the topic. An example, etic and emic view points of the topic. I wonder if there are other skills or experiences that members or professional anthropologists learned in regards to critical thinking in anthropology?

The native peoples of the entire Mediterranean coast are a single race of people, as much as such a thing can be said to exist. TMBR

tl;dr = post title, pretty much.

I do not believe in race realism, and have no agenda for claiming any one group of people are inherently any better than any other. My use of race is conservative to the word's etymological origin, the Latin radices, which means literally "roots". By my definition of this word, a people can be said to be of a common race if they come from common ancestral roots. (And racism, by this definition, is judging someone based on their roots.) I like this definition because it captures well how this word is used in practice, and applies equally well whether race is a social construct or a biological reality, both, or neither. For the record, I think race is primarily a social construct, and its biophysical manifestations at the population and individual level almost all supervene upon that group's choice to see themselves as a single people with a common origin (emic), and/or being grouped thusly by outsiders (etic). This happens by a number of mechanisms, including chronic endogamy, and epigenetics due to tolerance of certain life stressors and intolerance of others due to cultural values and survival niches.

Race is a valid construct in my line of work (medicine), only insofar as it's epidemiologically useful. It's well established that certain maladies befall people with certain ancestries with greater or lesser frequency than others. Also, certain remedies have a greater or lesser likelihood of efficacy in certain ethnic groups. Therefore knowing someone's ancestral background can be diagnostically and therapeutically helpful.

A lot of my medical training happened in the urban coastal northeastern US, and so I saw patients from all around the world. I noticed, both in my studies and in clinical practice, that people whose ancestry traces back to nearly anywhere on the Mediterranean coast can be usefully thought of as one group for the prevalence of quite a number of diseases, much the same way as people of African origin and Native American origin can be thought of as distinct groups with distinct common epidemiology. I was also intrigued to learn that the peoples of this region tend to have similar profiles of common haplogroups, both Y-chromosome and mitochondrial, which definitely lends credence to the idea of a common origin. Since the peoples of the Mediterranean today span such a range of cultures and language families, and are all fairly old cultures, I would hazard a guess that the common origin lies deep in pr
