AITA For Buying An Expensive Dressage Horse?

Here is the update.

Throwaway, because I think my step kids know my main:

Edit 4: Also I changed my husband's and my ages in the comments, because, yeah stepkids on Reddit. Those are the ballpark ie middle aged. Also, my parents are divorced as well. Both of parents husbands are like fathers to me. This is a v. different situation than the one I've known.

Edit 3

First let me be clear about a few things I didn't bring up in the original post because they didn't seem relevant: This child (let's call them Y) has been having problems since Husband and I got together. When we first got married and bought this house out in the country (we kept our city apartments as well, this was always meant as a "retreat"), Y had just dropped out of high school and I invited them to come stay here. We already had two horses on the property (mine from before I knew my husband), plus some chickens, goats, and ducks. Horses saved me when I was a teen. I thought they could help them. It last 2 weeks and ended in Y having to be removed from the house intoxicated by the Sheriff. And it has gone down hill from there. Y has struggled with addiction, chosen homelessness, and legal problems. And this has drained their parents and grandparents emotionally and financially. I even paid for the one in-patient rehab. Nothing worked. Maybe gender dysphoria is the cause of all this, but it is exhausting.

My husband and I have been married for 10 years. We have always kept our finances separate. Part of the reason we have chosen to do this is because he is 15 years older than me and had teenage children when we met. We agreed the kids were his and so were their expenses.

I have done quite well in my career and in the past five years have had quite a bit more disposable income than my husband, both because I make more money and I don't have the expense of children, university, etc. If there is a trip or something I want to go on that my husband can't afford, I happily pay his way. No questions asked.

One of the things I do spend a good deal of money on is horses. Horses have been a passion of mine since I was a child and I got back into riding around the time I got married. Recently, I have decided that I have progressed to the point to buy a pretty price Dutch Warmblood with an excellent pedigree. This was an expensive purchase (about $85,000 USD), but it is a life

Brown tack in the dressage ring... am I making a mistake?

Dressage riders and eventers... help me out please! I want to be able to do low level dressage and eventing. My trainer recommended buying an all purpose saddle so I'm selling my jumping saddle and looking for something new.

Is brown totally inappropriate for the dressage ring? Will it affect the way I score? I have my eye on a lovely stubben but it's brown. If it won't hold me and my horse back as baby eventers, is there a level at which where brown tack will start affecting our dressage placing?

I've also noticed most of the used all purpose saddles for sale are brown, does an all purpose saddle being brown affect its re-sale price/marketability?

Hello, I am currently wondering if anyone has any advice for me concerning dressage. I have been pondering about taking lessons but I am unsure where to start.

I do not own a horse and it is within my understanding that dressage requires a close bond between the rider and horse, which I fear that if I take lessons with one of the trainers horses that I will have to restart essentially training when I do get my own horse (if that makes any sense).

I am also unsure who to go to for lessons, I know someone who trains horses and with people, but I don’t know if she has experience in dressage (she likely does, but I haven’t asked yet and I also don’t know if she’d be willing to teach me). But if she doesn’t I don’t know where to look, I’m worried that I’ll find one of those trainers who are just incompetent and I won’t be able to tell because I’ve never taken dressage before.

Any advice will be helpful, I thank you in advance for your input and time you took to reply.

I bought a horse off the track to retrain, and I feel like he was even more of a gamble because of his back. He has no topline at all, and is a bit sway backed. I plan to have a vet out to give me an opinion on it, but do you think he would be sound for jumpers? Or are we dressage bound? reddit.com/gallery/nyy5jm

[DS] [Early 2000s] Horse game where you were at a riding school and did dressage and other stuff

So i've been trying to find this game ever since I went on a nostalgia trip for my childhood horse games after watching a youtube video. I've been googling trying to find this game and I can't to save my life. IDK if anyone here will be able to help but figured it would be worth a shot.

So what I remember of this game that was on the DS because I remember drawing stuff on the touchpad portion of it. So you were at this riding academy where you were learning about dressage and cross country and show jumping (I feel like it was in some desert climate but that may just be a random inkling). And during it you had to go to like the library and learn like the things to draw for the dressage moves and that's all I really remember of it other than it being good graphics (at least what my memories of childhood remember).

Any help is appreciated cause I would love to be able to play this again for my nostalgia trip!!!

Dressage Riders with Bad Hips

Hello all,

I’m looking for recommendations for a used dressage saddle, especially from those who have bad hips (don’t we all, ha!).

I am currently in an Albion Platinum Genesis with a removable tear drop thigh block, but it’s becoming increasingly uncomfortable because the flap feels a bit too far back, I think. I’m having surgery soon, but once I’m back riding again my saddle fitter will be coming out to help me find some better options, but I wanted to check in here so I have some ideas on where to start looking.

I LOVE my trainer’s Custom saddles, especially the mono flap ones, but I don’t know if I can stomach the cost (I will save if I can’t find anything else, though).

I -think- I’m looking for a narrower twist and a deeper seat, but with a more forward flap so my thigh isn’t forced back, which is what hurts me the most. I especially don’t want to feel like my leg is locked while I’m training my new OTTB, since he’s fresh and won’t be strong enough for any extended sitting work for a while.

My horse is moderately withered but a MW, and a larger shoulder. Ill probably be looking in the $1000 to $1500 range.

Any ideas? Thank you!

More (Realistic) Dressage Stuff Added...

I was always thinking and wanting a huge dressage update in the game. I feel like this wouldn't change much with the "dressage" clubs and actually have some stuff for more realistic dressage. It would be cool if there was a type of race in maybe the riding arena or the arena near Jorvik stables. This race could have different moves you and your horse would have to do within the time limit. Obviously every horse in SSO cannot do special moves but what if they came out with an updated Lipizzaner or any other horse that would have two special moves. This horse would be the only one allowed to do this race. The first move would be the piaffe, the Lusitano already has this but what if you could use it as long as possible (not as realistic but would be better for dressage) I'm thinking you would do the usual move for the special "walking animation style". I'm pretty sure that's holding down shift and pressing once on W. The second move would be a pirouette, the Jorvik Friesian horse does have this move but in my opinion it isn't fluent and needs to be spaced out a bit more. That animation would be the spacebar one. Now this could be a great thing for dressage clubs and for people who want a more realistic dressage horse. The dressage clubs obviously are nothing compared to actual dressage irl and I doubt they will ever be. However, I think this would be great for both sides and making rrp players and people who own and are in dressage clubs happy.

Another thing I would like to see is actual realistic updated dressage saddles and bridles, the saddles we currently have and are using for dressage aren't the greatest and most people just end up using the jumping saddles. I feel like if we had updated dressage tack it would add more realism to the game. Another thing I always thought of (not really related to dressage, just an idea) was what if we had fly or ear bonnets for our horses. I think this would be a great "head decoration" and we could style our horse even more. The different outfits that we could create with this update would be great. Now obviously that isn't a need but I think it would be a small thing that could make many people happy. Something I've always thought about was if we were able to stack different saddle pads the only ones being able to do that would be the half pads/shorter saddle pads. I know it could get glitchy and stuff but it would be an interesting thing to have.

That's basically all I was thinking today, lmk what you think about th

Dressage noob looking for saddle advice

I want to purchase a training dressage saddle for my Arabian gelding. Right now I'm mostly just trying to weed out the brands/makers that aren't worthwhile from the ones that are. I'd like to not spend an arm and a leg, and I really don't need anything fancy. Right now I'm mostly just looking for general opinions on brands and types, and what is/isn't a good deal.

I had my first dressage lesson!!

I’ve ridden for many many years now and consider myself a ranch rider. I currently board my western quarter horse in a dressage barn (fun circumstances) and I have been nothing but pleased. I was so worried the other riders would snub me, but everyone has been so wonderful.

Last week I got brave enough to ask the trainer if she would be willing to give me a lesson on my western horse! I completely believe in the benefits of cross training with different riding disciplines. MY LESSON WAS AMAZING!!! We worked on how to help my horse balance herself and different ways to use my legs and my core. The trainer was also pretty impressed with how my horse moved and how well she handled it all. I’ve set up a monthly lesson with her for the foreseeable future.

I tried to share my joy with my husband, he tried very hard to understand all the things we worked on but he just wasn’t getting it. I just had to share somewhere. ☺️

AITA For Buying An Expensive Dressage Horse? UPDATE

Update from this post

First, thank you all for your insight. Here is the original (I now understand bizarre) problem. I spoke with my husband & Y. Husband apologized and said he was just frustrated and lashed out. Y was not so apologetic. As per the suggestions here, I offered to pay 1/2 of the 1st surgery (I learned this is a multi-part deal) if the following conditions were met: For 12 continuous months, Y 1) keeps stable, independent housing; 2) work in paid employment at least 25 hours a week; 3) take random drug tests AT MY & HUSBAND'S request.; 4) attend weekly religious services of their choice; 5) weekly NA meetings.

Husband then told Y any future support from husband (including husband continuing to pay for HRT) would depend on these conditions being met/worked on. Y said that these terms were "impossible" and could not be met and that I didn't understand that this had to be done IMMEDIATELY. I told them the offer remains on the table, if they ever decide to take me up. Y is upset, but I think this is the most responsible thing we (Husband and I can do)

So, not an ideal ending, but Husband and I are at least back on the same page. And I am off for a much needed hack.

Dressage scores

Hey, I'm wondering, if you had any advice on Dressage. It completely ruins it for me, to be honest. I tend to get flawless scores in Cross Country and Showjumping, but mostly end up with > 10 penalties in Dressage, despite scoring around 9/10 in every movement. I have no idea what I'm doing wrong.

Do you have any tips?
