Corpus Luteum Cyst & Progesterone

Hello,

I had my 7 week ultrasound yesterday and the tech discovered a cyst. My doctor asked if I had any pain and I said no and she said good they usually go away on their own or are reabsorbed into the body during the second trimester. She said it’s there to help the baby by providing the hormones it needs - progesterone and estrogen. She also said they would monitor it during my next scan which is to be at 18 weeks, but she wasn’t worried at all and everything with the baby was fine.

This was a lot to take in, but I did have a question pop up after I left my appointment. My Dr. had me start on progesterone supplements (pills) to be started on the day of ovulation when we were TTC and it was to be continued until the first 12 weeks of pregnancy if I got pregnant. This was because my progesterone levels were so low at the beginning of my last pregnancy. She thought the progesterone would would help us in our TTC journey and it did since we had success right away.

I have been taking the pills as directed, but now I’m thinking is the cyst a result of too much progesterone? I called the nurse line and even the nurse wasn’t sure and she has left a message with the Dr. so I’m awaiting a response. I don’t want to continue taking it if it may contribute to making the cyst larger.

I just wanted to know if anyone has any experience or knowledge in this.

Thanks

Corpus luteum cyst vs ectopic symptoms?

I’m not sure if I may be experiencing an ectopic or cyst.. I am currently around 4/5 weeks pregnant. I am getting achey sort of cramps on my left side, near my ovary. They come and go but are not unbearable that I’m not unable to do things. I still get cramps all round my abdomen but I have noticed that I have been getting some on my left side. My hCG and progesterone levels are fine so far. My progesterone was actually 29.5 at only 4 weeks pregnant which is quite high. Also, as well as cramping on the left side it goes round to my hip and lower back (the same side) which radiates down my left leg which is weird. I’ve also been quite bloated, more on that side than my right side, but I thought that may be because I’m also constipated. I’m not sure. I’m getting a scan next week when they should be able to see something in my uterus. I’m just hoping they can as its freaking me out! I haven’t had any bleeding, only the tiniest bit of blood but that didn’t come back and it was barely noticeable. Can anyone tell me their symptoms of a corpus luteum cyst or who have had similar symptoms to me and the pregnancy was fine? I’m just hoping its that and not an ectopic pregnancy.

Chances of twins? Two corpus luteums

Hi everyone!!!

I just had my first ultrasound at 6 weeks 5 days. It was transvaginal. They found one baby measuring exactly what we estimated and with a strong heart beat. She said I must have ovulated an egg from each ovary because both ovaries have a corpus luteum.

Do you think there are any chances of it being twins and they missed the second baby?

Thank you all!! :)

Transvaginal Ultrasound conducted due to abnormal uterine bleeding. Only finding of note was "Corpus luteum: hemorrhagic" but doctor says I'm fine and normal.

Now, color me skeptical, but isn't anything hemorrhagic not exactly "Fine and normal".

Should I seek a second opinion on this? What should I do, I honestly am not really that sure?

No Corpus Luteum

Hi everyone. I'm a day short of 8 weeks. I've been on progesterone pills since 4w2D twice a day until last week when I went down to 1/day. Now my breast pain is gone and I feel like I've made a big mistake. On my 5w ultrasound they couldn't see a corpus luteum and downplayed it like it was no big deal, but now I'm reading that not seeing one is super rare. Has anyone gone through anything similar?

I want to get another ultrasound but this would be my 3rd already (had one at 6w after significant cramping that lasted 24hr, I thought I was miscarrying). Thanks for any advice. I have possible adenomyosis, past uterine trauma, and a few losses.

I've had a corpus luteum cyst since December and had zero pain symptoms in my day to day life until the ultrasound tech SHOVED her equipment into my abdomen

My title might sound misleading I'm sorry I was trying to be brief.

I've had a corpus luteum cyst since December and I've never had any symptoms in my day to day life, except for when I have sex in certain positions that go deep.

I finally went to the doctor last week because the pain was gradually getting worse and worse since December. This is why I estimate I've had the cyst since December, despite just going last week.

When I went to the gyno last Wednesday morning, she shoved the ultrasound equipment so deep and hard into my abdomen. At this point in my life, my cyst was unnoticeable except during sex in certain positions, so what she was doing was only uncomfortable, it didn't hurt. So that's why I didn't tell her to stop, I was only in discomfort, not pain.

But I'm so upset that as the days pass since my appointment, I'm getting more and more pain in the area she pressed so hard down in, just in my day to day life. I haven't really had any sex this week, just in my daily life I'm now having pain in that area, it feels like a dull pain in the general area, but sharp right in the center of it.

I also feel so angry that I kept being too scared to go to the doctor and get mistreated, and now I finally went, and I am so unhappy with the pain I'm experiencing after the appointment. Is it normal to jam the ultrasound equipment so fucking hard into my abdomen?

Thought I was pregnant.. turns out it's a corpus luteum cyst

Man! My period is 5 days late, since CD14 I've had full on bloating (literally look 7 months pregnant), severe nausea (not wanting to eat until the afternoon and only carbs). I was SO sure I was pregnant (would be around 5 weeks) but a transvaginal ultrasound today confirmed that I just have a CL cyst on one of my ovaries. The tech also told me there is 'no sign at all of pregnancy'

After the disappointment of this today I just don't know how I can start up with TTC all over again. My loss was in March and now I feel so depressed about it and just back to square one.

Has anyone else here had a corpus luteum cyst before?

Update - day 38 and still no period. Testing daily and getting stark negatives. I think the cyst is making my period late

Corpus luteum cyst or ectopic pregnancy?

Hopefully this is an alright place to post this. Yesterday I had a breakdown because I'm feeling so scared, upset, and, honestly, alone

I'm 28 years old and this is my first pregnancy. I'm in a foreign country visiting my husband, but I really wish I was home because I don't trust doctors here at all.

I had strong uterine cramping on the 15th, 16th, and 17th of February. Very similar to period cramps. My period was expected on the 18th and I never cramp that early before my period, so due to the cramping, extremely sore and tender boobs, and some random breakouts, I took a pregnancy test and got a BFP. I just had a feeling.

On the 25th, my husband and I were intimate and I started spotting the next day. Obviously, I was very concerned and made an appointment for the 1st of March (yesterday).

During the appointment, I explained what had been happening and we did a transvaginal scan. My doctor saw something in my uterus, but wasn't sure if it was a gestational sac or bleeding of some sort. I'm still very early (5+4).

Right ovary looked fine, but when she got to my left ovary, she said she thought I might have an ectopic pregnancy. After that, she sent me to another doctor to get a second opinion.

The second doctor did an external pelvic ultrasound and confidently diagnosed the mysterious ovary mass as a cyst (most likely corpus luteum) and measured it at 1.8 cm x 1.52 cm. I brought the results back to my original doctor and she just said, "I hope I'm wrong".

I had my blood drawn to measure my HCG levels and will go back tomorrow to get them drawn again and compare.

I was visibly stressed and she told me I shouldn't stress about it and that they'll figure it out.

I'm just so confused. Are cysts and gestational sacs that difficult to tell apart? I'm not liking that my doctor isn't trying harder to confirm her suspicions and that she is dismissing how I am feeling about it. Ectopic pregnancies are super serious and terrifying I'm having a hard time not freaking out about this...

I guess I'll find out more tomorrow, but in the meantime, I'm trying really hard to relax. To make matters worse, my spotting has turned into bleeding...

Has anyone been through something similar?

Edit: It seems I have had a miscarriage. The bleeding increased after my appointment on Monday and continued on Tuesday. At my appointment on Wednesday, the bleeding had significantly decreased, and I haven't bled at all today. Once she did the scan, she saw that my uterine lining

Corpus luteum cyst pain

Hello all, I’m seeking some experience and if possible guidance. I am roughly 4w3d so EARLY DAYS. On Tuesday afternoon I experienced horrific cramping (I mean agonizing) and ended up in emergency. Had an ultrasound and they couldn’t rule out ectopic this early on but thought there were signs of cells in the uterus and identified a corpus luteum cyst but were unsurprised. Then again on Friday exccccruuciating pain and went to the early pregnancy assessment unit. Another ultrasound, more evidence of pregnancy in uterus and yes, hello cyst. No evidence of it twisting the ovary as there is blood flow to the ovary. My hormones are doing all the right things but holy hell. If it is just the cyst, I keep reading that it usually resolves by the second trimester but this pain is unpredictable and horrific. I can’t go into the office like this because I’ll just end up crying on the floor in pain. Does anyone have any words of comfort? I will try to update so that if anyone else finds themselves in this position they have some idea of how it might go.

PUL and Hemorrhagic Corpus Luteum Cyst - almost 6 weeks

Went to ER Tuesday with right side pelvic/abdominal and back pain, I was 5w4d. HCG was 2385 (up from 1895 the previous day, doctor said it was a good ride) and U/S did not see any gestational sac. Was diagnosed with a hemorrhagic corpus luteum cyst and had a small amount of blood in my abdomen. The pain seemed to peak then go away so they think it had burst. The prior ultrasound I had at 5w exactly showed the cyst to be 2.5cm and had grown by Tuesday but they didn’t tell me how much. I was diagnosed with a Pregnancy of Unknown Location (PUL) but they said it was good there was no signs of it in the tubes.

I am scheduled for another beta today and another ultrasound tomorrow at exactly 6 weeks. I had a relatively pain free day Wednesday. This morning I am having similar pains as Tuesday in my side and back, almost feels like a pulled muscle. I’m also having a bit of pink spotting. I am scared that this is ectopic, but there was no sign of that on Tuesday. I don’t know if I should be going back in or not. They said come back if things get worse, but it’s not technically worse right now I guess, it’s just returned...they did say that the cyst could cause me some ongoing pain, but never mentioned the spotting. My brain says hold out until the ultrasound tomorrow, but it’s a scary situation to be in.

Anyone have a CL cyst that bled during pregnancy?

They think the hormones from my pregnancy are effecting it but I’m also on 400mg vaginal progesterone and I’m gonna talk to my doctor about maybe going back to 200mg/day...

I have not had any bleeding. I am a little nervous about an ectopic but have read online that corpus luteum cysts are common on the ovary you ovulated from and provide progesterone to the baby. Has anyone else had a similar experience? Your reassurance would be very helpful, I am so nervous that something will go wrong!

Corpus Luteum Cyst Pain

I am currently about 5 and a half weeks and was feeling some intense cramping on one side. I called my doctor and they had me come in for an ultrasound to rule out a possible ectopic pregnancy. Everything looked good on that front - not too much to see this early on but they saw a yolk sac in my uterus. I also had a 4cm corpus luteum cyst on my left ovary (the side that hurts) and they said it was a common thing and I’m likely experiencing pain because it is on the larger side but should resolve itself by my second trimester.

My question is, has anyone else felt very strong pain from this cyst? Everything I’m reading says it should feel like a period cramp or light twinges. I have been having to lay down with intense pain (sweating, can’t think, can’t talk, yelling out in pain) multiple times a day and this just doesn’t feel normal. I used to have intense period pain before birth control so I don’t know if this is just how my body reacts. This is just not what I was expecting the first trimester to feel like.

Corpus luteum cyst pain or possible ectopic? I wish I didn’t have to worry about this!

I am 4 weeks, 1 day currently, so it’s very early. I had an ectopic pregnancy in September of 2019 (treated with methotrexate) and a chemical pregnancy in March of 2020. So far, things are looking a lot better than the last 2 times. I haven’t gotten betas drawn yet, I go for my first blood test on Monday, but my pregnancy tests are progressing appropriately and I have not had any spotting or bleeding so far (knock on wood). Hoping my betas show that I’m doubling as I should.

The thing that is concerning me, especially with my past, is that I’m having some right sided aching that comes and goes, which is something I had on the left side with my ectopic pregnancy. The difference is last time I had bleeding and not great progression. I do know that sometimes a corpus luteum cyst can cause some pain, so I’m praying that it’s just that. Can anyone describe what kind of pain a corpus luteum cyst causes? The pain I’m having is not unbearable, but kind of uncomfortable and nagging. More of an aching than sharp pain.

I mainly needed to vent about my worries, but if anyone has any insight that would be fabulous. Happy new year!

Corpus luteum cyst causing hcg level?!

Hey ladies! I am so impatient, the waiting game is killing me, so I thought I would get yalls input !

Im 28 and have only been pregnant one time, 7 years ago. I lost the pregnancy very early....my progesterone wouldn't rise. Thats when they diagnosed me with PCOS. I was put on BC but I quit taking it probably about 5 years ago (I was never consistent with it anyway). I also quit taking metformin. I started taking myo + d-chiro inositol a few months ago because we wanted to think about having a baby soon and I read good reviews on it.

So flash forward to the second week in August and I started to cramp and get super sore boobs. Didn't think much of it....until it lasted 3 weeks and my boobs have only felt like this one other time....7 years ago. Took a pregnancy test last monday and BAM pregnant! Which I found so odd because I hadn't had my period aimce june! So how the hell did i ovulate lol

Took my blood test Wednesday and my levels were 203. Then on Thursday I came in because the pain in my side was so bad and very alarming. They did an emergency ultra sound and couldn't see a sac yet, but I did have a corpus luteum cyst. She told me not to worry im still super early and there's not much we can tell until my zecond blood test comes in on Monday. And how the cyst can be from the pregnancy!

I CANNOT WAIT TILL THEN! its only one day but in freaking out. I work at 3 am so ill be up waiting for 5 hours tomorrow before they call me lmao

After googling corpus luteum cysts I saw that they can cause positive pregnsncy tests because they release progesterone!

So my question is...could it have cause my 203 hcg level? I know pregnancy tests pick up anything over 5, but the blood test is what I'm curious about?

Praying so hard for my numbers to double tomorrow! With me having PCOS and my man went thru chemo when he was 18...this baby would be our miracle rainbow baby! We have never practiced safe sex so we didn't think we could even get pregnant w out help! (Last pregnancy was with an ex)

Thank you guys so much! Xoxo

I posted here last week, stressed out about my corpus luteum cyst. Well I got my second blood test results back and they werent very promising.

I went from 203 to 258 in 48 hours. In between those two days is when I had the US that found the CL cyst but no sac.

Doc is having me come in labor day to see what my levels are. I'm trying so hard not to stress. The only pain I have is like strong pms cramps mainly on my left side. Not all the time. No blood, cramps aren't too severe.

Shouldn't the CL cyst help with getting the pregnancy to a healthy start?! Im praying so hard that my levels doubled by Monday!! Im hoping im just super early & thats why things aren't progressing like normal.

hemorrhagic corpus luteum with a side of "women's pain isn't taken seriously"

So last Thursday I had sudden onset of sharp, suprapubic pain. I was visibly sweating and could not stand upright so I was sent home from work early. I went to see my GP who organised pelvic and abdominal imaging and pain relief.

I made the imaging appointment and they only do one scan per day per issue per patient for some bizaar reason. So if I needed a pelvic and a shoulder scan. Fine. If I need a pelvic and abdominal scan, I have to go on separate calendar days. Whatever.

The pelvic scan shows a 290mm follicle on my left ovary. Fine. I went home and continued to take pain relief (naproxen and tramadol) until the pain worsened and I began vomiting from the pain.

I present to ED where I throw up in triage and am quickly sent back to be seen by a Dr and given an anti emetic.

The ED doc come around and palpated my abdomen. Takes some bloods and a urine sample and gets my history.

Without results or further examination he proclaims that the follicle is a cyst and that it can take several weeks to go away on its own. My options are to go home with pain relief and wait it out. I've been through this before so I start pulling all of my pain meds out of my bag. Naproxen, tramadol, oxycodone. I say it's not working, that's why I'm here. He says it can't be that bad or if be "writhing in pain and vomiting". I actually laugh at this and tell him that that is precisely why I've come in. The nurse game me an anti emetic shot before he saw me. I refuse to leave until they treat me like they would a man with unexplained abdominal pain.

The Dr leaves and sends a nurse to tell me that the gynae team will see me when they can. He doesn't come back at all in the three hours it takes for the gynae team to get to me.

They tell me the same thing. It will go away on its own in SEVERAL WEEKS. Cysts are a normal part of the cycle. If I was it that much pain I'd be writhing and vomiting. I'm literally crying in pain at thus stage and the only reason I'm not throwing up is that they keep giving me drugs to stop that very thing!

Again I refuse to leave until they bother to actually treat me. So the agree to keep me over night and have the specialist see me.

The specialist was great, he arranged appropriate pain medication, had the nurse make sure I knew I could have extra if I needed it and booked me in for a more specialised pelvic imaging.

In the imaging rooms they discover that I don't just have a cyst, it's ruptured and bleeding in on its self. They do some palpati

Is it possible to have a Corpus Luteum & not have ovulated?

I had a transvaginal ultrasound scan on CD16 to exclude an ectopic (after getting positives in the middle of the cycle following a chemical pregnancy). The scan showed a Corpus Luteum on my left ovary. I am now on CD 30 (cycle usually 28 days) and have had light spotting since CD 25, which has not really ramped up to a full period. Is it possible I didn't ovulate, which would explain the light bleeding, or that I have some kind of progesterone deficiency that meant the lining didn't build up?

Re-occurring hemorrhagic/corpus luteum cysts?

I have a history of getting occasional hemorrhagic/corpus luteum cysts (usually once a year). During this year, 4 months ago, I had a 3.8cm cyst on my left ovary that my GYN suggested was either hemorrhagic or an endometrioma. I had a follow-up scan 2 months ago, which showed my cyst was "supposedly" gone (I'm thinking it ruptured a few days before my ultrasound, but I'm not 100% sure), and my ovaries shrunk back to typical sizes again, leading to the assumption it was another hemorrhagic cyst. Last week (a few days after I ovulated, as my pain during ovulation was very minimal to none), I started to feel intermittent pelvic pain again, and have felt it throughout the week. I went back to my GYN today, where they discovered my left ovary is enlarged again with a 2.8 cm cyst that is either hemorrhagic or an endometrioma (no free fluid was noted either, despite my pain); however, my GYN also mentioned that the follow-up ultrasound from 2 months ago may have been "inaccurate" in that my original 3.8cm cyst may have never really gone away since I have a cyst on the same ovary again, even though I had felt no pain for the last 7 weeks since my last cyst ruptured until last week again, and my ovaries were clear and cyst free at that time. My GYN told me to return after 2 cycles (I'm due for my cycle any day now) for a follow-up ultrasound to see if the cyst has changed size, and I am feeling super confused because I have never experienced having multiple, painful ovarian cysts within a short timeframe, as I typically have only one a year. My GYN mentioned using a low dose of birth control, which I'm hesitant about, as he also said birth control doesn't prevent cysts from forming. I am feeling super frustrated dealing with so much ovarian cyst pain over the last few months :( . Has anyone else been in a similar situation with these types of cysts? Other than these "occasional" ovarian cysts, I don't typically have heavy or super painful periods or ovulation, so my GYN doesn't think it's endo; although, he did state the only way to confirm endo would be via laproscopy, which he hasn't recommended me for since I don't display many endo symptoms.

Hi all- Let me say this community has been a life saver. And I can't believe some of the things you all have been through, much respect and admiration and love for you. Anyways I'm a brass facts type of guy so here are the details of what's going on:

35F at 5+ weeks pregnant 1st pregnancy Slight spotting started yesterday with increased bleeding (not enough to change out pass regularly or anything, but more than just spotting) Severe cramping occured over night/today- many of her periods are accompanied by severe cramping however (medically no previous conditions found). Pain not located to one side- mostly medial.

We go to the OB today- she's still cramping severely. U/S performed and nothing found in uterus. Can't see anything really in the ovaries/tubes bc old machine. Sends us down stairs to imaging and performs another U/S With fancy new machine. Can't find anything in uterus, tube, ovaries. However lots of fluid around. Nothing confirmed however one ovary seems "different."

Here is the thing... After the first transvaginal ultrasound cramping was gone. After the second TV ultrasound a medium sized clot like substance came out as she was getting dressed again. All cramping/ pain eliminated at this point. Very little bleeding anymore.

She took blood work today and will be going back on Thursday for more and to evaluate.

She's currently just laying down again no pain anymote- just tired.

Doc says she's unsure but that with bloodwork and follow up we can reassess. Too early call to want to Rx medication for ectopic or send to surgery.

Just curious if anyone had anything similar situation in terms of symptoms dissipating after an ultrasound or clot passing and if so what was the diagnosis or outcome?

Thanks - also let me know if I'm I'm the wrong sub! I didn't know if it was too early to start narrowing in on r/miscarriage or r/ectopic pregnancy.

Corpus luteum cyst stomping on my dreams.

I had an ovarian cyst a few months ago diagnosed by ultrasound and I feel like the same thing is happening again. 18DPO with no period and all BFNs. I have back pain like my period wants to come but it hasn’t showed. The last time I had a cyst I had some progesterone symptoms - sore nipples, mild nausea, and an achy left ovary. It delayed my period by two weeks and when I finally got it, it was so terrible. Worst cramps ever. This time I have the exact same symptoms. I don’t want to go through that again and I also hate that it’s delaying cycle 7, thus delaying our next chance to TTC. Why do our bodies betray us so much?! 😭

Corpus Luteum Cyst?

Had an ultrasound last week because my cycles haven't returned post birth control. That day they said it looked like I had just ovulated (yay!) so the doctor said to wait for two more weeks to see if I get my period before doing Provera. She also had bloodwork done (TSH, FSH, Prolactin). I haven't heard anything from the doctor yet but my test results were posted in the online portal and the ultrasound notes say "Corpus Luteum Cyst." They didn't mention that it looked like a cyst in the office, just the corpus luteum which indicated ovulation. Anybody know anything about this? All of the articles I've found are about corpus luteum cysts during pregnancy but I'm not sure how that affects your cycle if you're not pregnant! (BFN this morning fyi)

Corpus luteum cyst?

Do any of you who are at 5-6+ weeks have confirmed a Corpus Luteum Cyst? I am 5+4 and yesterday I’ve started to feel some throbbing/pinch pain on where my ovary could be when I sit scrunched up/bent over a bit. It’s not constant but it’s been happening maybe 15+ times a day. I’m hoping it’s just a corpus luteum cyst... does everyone get one? Do you get similar pain now?

Back story, I have pcos and I had two follicles the cycle I conceived so I’m not sure if that increases the cyst likelihood.

Corpus Luteum Pain?

At my ultrasound yesterday, the tech saw a fairly large corpus luteum on my right ovary (either 2 cm or 2 inches...she actually said both, so I don't know which one she meant). I mentioned that I had been having intermittent mild twingy pains on the right side of my pelvis, and asked if that could be the cause. She said she didn't know, but maybe.

Since then, the pains have become more frequent and I can feel it almost all the time. It isn't severe, but it is uncomfortable. I did some googling, and it appears that this is normal, but I'm still worried. Has anyone else experienced this? I am around 5 weeks if that makes a difference.

Corpus luteum cyst during/after miscarriage?

My story is that I was diagnosed with a blighted ovum last week at my ultrasound at 6d5w. I waited a week and had another ultrasound yesterday at 7w5d just to be sure, and there was still just an empty sac measuring a little over 5 weeks. I had not had any miscarriage symptoms whatsoever (no spotting, cramps, etc), and that is probably because I had a good-sized corpus luteum cyst producing progesterone and maintaining the pregnancy. I took vaginal cytotec yesterday morning after the ultrasound, and finally started having some bleeding last night around 6pm. The cramps yesterday were bad, but the bleeding was relatively light compared to what I was expecting. I am going to have another ultrasound this week to make sure I passed it all. One thing I am worried about now is how fast this corpus luteum cyst will regress and if it will keep me from ovulating and having a real period. I know corpus luteum cysts are common and are a good thing typically in normal early pregnancies, but it seemed like the ultrasound tech made a big deal about how big mine was and how that was what was preventing me from miscarrying on my own. Anyone have any similar experiences with corpus luteum cysts or have any idea what I can expect as far as my cycles getting back to normal?

Round ligament pain vs corpus luteum cyst?

With my first pregnancy I had a large cyst on my right ovary that would let me know it existed whenever I sneezed with a sharp stabbing pain. Before I even had a positive test this time I was getting those stabby pains on both sides, though more often on the left.

I don't have my first scan for 2.5 more weeks so naturally I've been driving myself crazy looking up rlp pain in early pregnancy vs cyst pain, particularly on both sides. I've got myself half convinced it's twins, especially as I had no ms with my first pregnancy and I've been getting queasy already with this one.

Anyone else experiencing really early rlp or differeciate between rlp and cyst pain?
