E4 Computer Engineering announced Monte Cimone, a RISC-V computing cluster for co-designing HPC applications and libraries, located in Italy

It contains 12 mini-ITX motherboards and each board has a SiFive Freedom U740 SoC. I think this means they simply use SiFive Unmatched for the base system. It is fine, as their purpose is not winning TOP500 or such.

”Monte Cimone is the first RISC-V ISA cluster specifically designed, built, and validated for co-design activities targeted to enable its use in the HPC ecosystem and having an operational environment as the primary target.”

It is exactly what a development board is designed for, isn't it?

Cineca, the largest supercomputing center in Italy, have already ported several HPC applications and libraries for verification, and will continue the effort with Monte Cimone. According to the article, for instance, an InfiniBand software stack is being ported on the system thanks to the boards' PCIe slots.

This cluster will help future RISC-V supercomputers in EU as well as other countries. Bravo!

Chromebook Recommendation Needed: Computing on University Cluster with VPN

As mentioned in the title, I need a recommendation for a Chromebook that would allow me to compute on my university's computing cluster. Not sure if it's a hitch, but I need to be concurrently connected via VPN to the University network to access the cluster. I don't need touch/tablet flexibility. Besides accessing the cluster via linux/bash, I'll also need to access RStudio.

I'd like to keep the costs below $500 but will entertain suggestions at any price level. If performance in virtual computing is the same, then lower prices are a tiebreaker for preference.

Is this the expected performance from a computing cluster?

Hi all, not sure if this is the right place to post this but let me know if it isn't.

I just got access to a local computing cluster and one of the first things I did was to try running this numpy benchmark (not my code) to see how it performs.

Without going into too much detail, the cluster consists of multiple nodes, each node with a dual socket E5-2690v3 (12C/24T at 3.5GHz).

I requested a node of 12 cores for a few minutes. Here are the results:

Dotted two 4096x4096 matrices in 4.06 s. 
Dotted two vectors of length 524288 in 0.62 ms.
SVD of a 2048x1024 matrix in 4.47 s.
Cholesky decomposition of a 2048x2048 matrix in 0.42 s.
Eigendecomposition of a 2048x2048 matrix in 59.85 s.

libraries = ['mkl_lapack95_lp64', 'mkl_intel_lp64', 'mkl_intel_thread', 'mkl_core', 'iomp5', 'pthread']

10900k:

Dotted two 4096x4096 matrices in 0.39 s.
Dotted two vectors of length 524288 in 0.03 ms.
SVD of a 2048x1024 matrix in 0.18 s.

How folding@home and other over the Internet cluster computing platforms check that the results a client sends are right?

I was wondering how such platforms keep security in check, initially i thought about sending the same thing to multiple computers but i immediately though that if you really want to exploit it you could just fire up a bunch of virtual machines and assign to them different ips with some trickery to exploit the system again

So there is really any why those platforms reliably checked if what was sent back to them was something sent by a computer owned by a very not kind person?

The system precedently described works almost always if and only if there is a huge amount of different computers owned by different people connected to the server to do stuff

Trying to learn parallel computing. I have access to a cluster to try some projects but I don’t know enough to do anything.

Very little learned so far in these two weeks. Luckily I’ve been given logins to an hpc cluster for β€˜research’ and I’m being supervised by an hpc researcher. The researcher has asked me to do things that sound really simple but I’m clueless. I’m also embarrassed to ask him how to. Things like checking the C/C++ compilers that the cluster has, which APIs the GPUs have etc. I feel I’m not googling the right things too. Any help?

I've been recently seeing a lot of videos about raspberry pi clusters and have been wondering what they're actually good for. After a bit of research, the best answer I can find is a very generic:

Cluster Computing?

I plan on doing bulk optical character recognition (and a few other types of CPU tasks) using 3-5 machines, but would like to cluster them to make them more efficient.

I have no idea how to do this or what I should even be looking at. I saw "ricci" and beowulf clusters and a few tutorials that looked ancient on the net, but I think I need a bit more information before committing to them.

I have a few questions though:

  1. I typically run Manjaro Linux on all of my boxes (can I keep this)?
  2. One server has (basically) all the large storage and is running TrueNAS (it has a decent CPU, but I would like it to run TrueNAS) Can this server be used in the cluster?
  3. One node has all the SSD temporary space used for the OCR process. Would I be able to set that as the target for all reades/writes to the disk, even from other machines?
  4. What software should I run to achieve my goal?

Disclaimer: I know essentially nothing about how to actually start mining ETH/BTC, but is there anything stopping me from claiming time on my university's computing cluster and learning whatever I need to in order to actually run it? Python ETL approaches that work with cluster computing?

Most of my ETL work is done in pandas, with files stored in daily h5 files "description/yyyymmdd.h5". I usually have a lot of boilerplate to backfill the days etc from the command line. I sometimes use a computing cluster at our firm that can execute several jobs from a DAG described in a yaml. This doesn't play well with a tool like luigi because the cluster doesn't have luigi installed, and luigi can't do parallelization well natively.

Any recommendations ? It is important for me to be able to generate / regenerate the data historically as I iterate over models I'm trying. I usually end up just deleting the h5 files and resubmitting cluster jobs.

How do network switches play a role in cluster computing for the forerunner of one extremely power computer? How is latency kept low for the operations?

The part I get is that Ethernet is the most common and most versatile cable used in cluster computing. All cluster computers (from improvised Raspberry Pi clusters to Top 500 supercomputers) use network switches.

With the switch, how do operations (calculations, storage, RAM usage) involving the worker nodes interact with other nodes and the master node? If the master node delegates the operations to the worker nodes, how is it done in a way that ensures a continuous equivalent of one extremely powerful computer? What steps are taken to keep latency low? This is to ensure more efficient calculations and other operations. What's the typical and lowest possible latency for cluster computing involving Ethernet?

Parallel computing using HPC Clusters

Hi,

I have requested my school/research center to install EGSnrc/v2020 for parallel computing. They said they have installed the module (egsnrc/v2020) for me. Then, I have transferred the required files (EGS_HOME) over the HPC clusters and tried to run a sample input file (Beam_simulation). But I got an error (attached snapshot). I dont know why the error occurred and how to fix it (possibly). It would be great help if you have any comments/suggestions. Thanks in advance!

How to perform Grid computing/pc cluster?

Today the office threw away four identical desktop workstations, I asked if I could take them home instead of throwing them away, and now have this four workstations at home.

My first idea was to cannibalise them to build a better one out of them (they are ok for simple use, but can't run heavy programs such as online games) but suddenly read an article about grid computing and thought that maybe this would have been a better idea.

I have absolutely no idea about what that is, read some articles but I'm still quite confused. As far as I have understood, pc clustering is not ideal, but grid computing is.

My goal is to be able to run heavy programs such as Autodesk Inventor/ World of Tanks/ hearts of iron on them and would like to have an overview about if and how would be possible to achieve that.
