I'm wondering if anyone in this sub has a GSD with chronic ear infections, too – and if so, how are you treating them?
Harlow is 8 and for 6.5 years of her life she's been getting ear infections regularly. For the longest time I assumed it was a grass allergy, as she started to get them when we moved from Las Vegas to Florida, and they came on seasonally (she'd get 3 or 4 a year.)
This year, though, she's had one that we've been battling since May with it getting worse from September to now. From scratching and shaking, she popped blood vessels in both of her ears and has been living in a cone since September. We've done local and oral antibiotics, cortisone shots, and general ear infection medicine all on top of regular cleaning. We think we're in the maintenance phase of cleaning every 10-14 days and they look worse than ever. Nothing has knocked it out completely, and it keeps coming back.
We live in Germany from Oct 2020 - 2023, so there is a language barrier and also European vets tend to be hands off in our experience (this exact time they did not want to drain the blood from the ear and wanted to wait, even though we waited 2 weeks before taking her in for it because we knew that would be their answer. When I pressured them to do so, they got 15ml from the ear and you could see and feel Harlow relax from the pressure relief.) Is there something that I could ask for from the vet that could really take on this ear infection? We're ALL sick of the cone (my 3 y/o kid especially, she gets knocked over a ton) and she's miserable with her ears hurting all the time. We want to get her allergy tested and we've switched her food to a limited ingredient food.
Usually it starts with buzzing head (sand feeling) and vision going black when I stand up. Then after my period/not eating red meat for a month or two,I'll go into these "attacks" where I start getting palpitations really bad. my heart feels like its straining with excersize , it feels like sludge is in my heart area so I cough to try and get it out, My nose stuffs up so I breathe through my mouth, I feel weak and the world starts shaking and if it gets REALLY bad like in December it feels like gravity is pulling me so hard to the ground I cant sit up out of bed and I go pale.
The problem is, by time i get to a doctor ive been taking iron pills for 3 weeks so when they blood test me "everything is normal" other than cells being mycrocytic and hypochromic.
When I take iron sups and eat red meat it goes away for months.
Btw I dont eat red meat alot Im pretty much vegetarian. (big mistake will not be doing that anymore)
I read that chromic acid (CrO3) is an oxidizing agent. Since a Bronsted-Lowry acid donates a proton, I assumed that all acids are reducing agents.
How can an acid be an oxidizing agent?

Yeah, so as the title says, I'm back with more UI themeing goodness. There is some new stuff... But mostly I've put in work on moving my code around to create a version that can easily be customized.
The three original versions of my themes are now deprecated, and will get no further updates, instead I will maintain this one. The looks will remain, if you wish to continue using my older themes, they aren't going anywhere. And when/if they break, Ultrachromic will be able to produce the same looks.
The main new feature is that you can pick and choose as well as mix and match tons of aspects of the three themes. This involves going through step by step to copy paste the import lines for the parts you want.

Things worth mentioning, are that the brilliant logo titles and grid episode views created by u/prayagprajapati17 are now available on this version of chromic, and his custom icons can of course also be used together with it.

So, I was trying to make some chromic chloride, and it hasn't worked. I added some potassium dichromate in with some hydrochloric acid, set the temperature to 80°C, and let it go for about an hour. And yes, I did the stoichiometry correctly, everything was balanced. After an hour, the solution was almost the exact same. I started cooling it down, did some research into why it failed, and saw that I needed to add methanol. I quickly added about 100mL of methanol, and solution immediately darkened because it was still warm. It's now cooled down, but I'm not sure where to move next. Do I heat it up again and add more hydrochloric acid? Do I start over? And I can't buy it, I have to make it. Any advice is appreciated.
Is there anyway to remove it on the Xbox series x?
In my organic chemistry class, my professor presented chromic acid as something that would not oxidize benzene (same example in my textbook as well). Why would we expect this to happen in the first place? Where would another double bond even go? Is this just a bad example?
So I've read and re-read Chromic's famous GHB synth from GABA. In it they claim that GBL is produced in the reaction but I don't see how that's possible.
From what I understand, the nitrous acid attacks the amine on the GABA and the reaction proceeds to GHB via this mechanism: imgur.com/a/WUqkeZR

This is a recollection of the last time I have attempted the Sandmeyer reaction, all of my equipment, lab notes and notebooks were seized, so this might slightly lack the scientific integrity in contrast to if I had my notebook.
A 2L RBF was set up sitting in ice water on top of a magnetic stirrer with a thermometer in the side neck, 3mol of GABA (~310g) and 3mol NaNO2 (~208g) was added into the 2L RBF with ~700ml of distilled H2O, a stir bar was added and magnetic stirrer was turned on dissolving all solids in the water within ~5 minutes. A 500ml pressure equalized addition funnel was connected in the center neck on the 2L RBF and charged with 3.3mol chilled (at) HCl (~32%) ~335ml A thermometer adapter with the top unscrewed was placed in the top of the Pressure equalized addition funnel and fitted with a long plastic tube led out a window.
The main GABA NaNO2 aqueous mixture was cooled to ~0C and the chilled HCl was dripped into the solution at a rate of roughly 1 drip per 5 seconds, temperature was monitored through the reaction and ice was was replaced frequently to try to keep the main rxn mixture at 0C, the stopcock was closed if the temperature rose ~10C+ and cooled back to near 0C before allowing the HCl to drip again. Roughly every hour the drip rate was increased; (ie.)by 1 drip per 4 seconds after the first hour and 1 drip every three seconds, etc. so as to sustain the reaction momentum.
Small amounts of an brownish orange NO and NO2 gases evolved from the HCl addition, especially when temperature increased, though only a slight presence of this gas was noted. A brownish foamy substance appeared on the surface of the reaction mixtures stirring vortex. Light yellow colour is observed along with light bubbles being produced.
Once the HCl addition was done the mixture was left to stir for about an hour without replacing the ice. The reaction mixture has a noticeable butter/butyric acid smell. The 2L RBF containing the RXN mixtures necked were closed with stoppers and put in a dark room at ~20C for 3-4 Days (72-96 hours), afterwards, no bubbles were evolving at this point signaling no substantial reactions were still taking place
The Rxn mixture was taken out of the room and set up on a mag stir and x3 thorough Ethyl Acetate solvent extractions were performed (333ml each time) and collected; portions were added to the distillation apparatus in a 1L RBF which was then set up for vacuum distillation with a short path Condenser,
