A list of puns related to "Carnuntum"
Carnuntum was a city in modern day Austria. From what I can find it was ruled by allies of Rome who may have been Celtic. The Boii were a power in the area for a time. Perhaps it was them?
According to Wikipedia the first historical reference to Carnuntum is from 6 AD when Tiberius made it his base of operations against the Marcomanni, who were enemies of the Quadi. Maybe the Quadi ruled Carnuntum and allowed the Romans to use their city in hopes of seeing their rivals defeated?
However, I believe the Dacians also lived in the area, as well as the Pannonians.
Does anyone know the earlier history of this city or the region itself? I've tried doing as much of my own digging as possible but am having trouble finding specifics.
I am wondering how a Roman army would have marched from the garrison at Carnuntum through to Rome (following the march that Septimus Severus did to claim his position as Emperor) Did they know about Eastern passes through the Alps or would that have marched to the Via Claudia Augusta and followed a more well trodden path?
Thanks!
