I think most filmmakers and cinephiles would agree that Cannes is the most prestigious film festival in the world today, and the Palme d'Or is the "top" prize globally. But how did this come to pass? It's certainly not the oldest โ Venice preceded it by some seven years, or as many as thirteen if you ignore the aborted 1939 premier. And though I'd guess its antifascist origins may have had something to do with it, it seems that at least in the 1950s the Golden Bear/Lion were regarded on the same level of importance as the Palme. So what changed?
