I was at the bar a few years ago with a few friends. Money was a little bit tight, so I only ordered a few drinks. We sang some karaoke, played some pool, and then it came time for the bill. I guess the price of drinks went up or something, because I only had just enough cash to cover the drinks, with maybe like a 10 cents tip. I felt bad, and I apologized, but the waitress just scoffed, gave me a dirty look and I heard her mumble something like "What a cheapskate, next time bring enough money for a decent tip" or something like that. That's when I remembered I did have some bills on me still.
I reached into my pocket, and I pulled out like $5 in Canadian Tire money. Anyone not familiar with the store might not know what that is. Basically when you buy products there they give you like 10 - 25 cents extra that can only be spent at their store. It looks like real money, but probably more similar to a coupon. People like myself would horde it until they had enough to buy something decent with it, So $5 was a stack of like 40-50 different bills.
I gave her the $5 and told her not to spend it all at one place.
I have about 30$ in Canadian tire money that Iโd like to donate. I remember a few years back donating Canadian tire money to an animal shelter which they use to buy food & other supplies, but I canโt recall which one it was! Does anyone know of an animal shelter that accepts it? Thought I would ask here before emailing every shelter in the city ๐ thanks!
I have a bunch of it and I've heard that certain bills can be worth a lot of money, but I don't know which ones or how to price them.
I know there is a collectors club for it, but I don't know if it's worth joining. Any advice would be appreciated.
If Canadian Tire phased out the current system and introduced CTM they would by default create a CAD stablecoin. Large user base and backed by real goods and services. Sure CTM could speculatively trade above and below the peg on exchanges, but at Canadian Tire it's always 1:1 so there would be faith in the peg. All they would have to do is integrate wallet functionality into their current app.
I know any company could do this with their loyalty points system, but I think CT has a unique cultural advantage here, and before they went digital there was a small economy around Canadian Tire money.
Anyways I think this would be awesome.
Do you think this would be good or bad for CT, its customers, Canadians, crypto in general etc.

This happened to me a couple times and it's mostly to make a statement.
I purchased an item from Canadian Tire and I never take the CT money they offer because I don't care for it (or I just donate it in their donation box). Upon returning the item to Canadian Tire, I was asked to give back the CT money I was issued, to which I replied 'I never took it in the first place.' Well, the cashier insisted that I need to give it back else I get it deducted from the refund.
How can they charge real money for their CT money? I don't care if they issue out the free money (it's their decision), but if I don't want to participate, why do I have to pay for it?
The cashier went on a rant about how CT money is actually real money, and I asked her if she gets paid in CT money. She said 'no' but insisted the CT money is real. Conversation was just too dumb and petty to continue.
Anyways...
EDIT
Thank you everyone for participating! No matter what your opinions, it's interesting to see how people interpret situations. Here are my final thoughts (summed up from one of my comments).
The way I see it, the main problem has to do with tracking and transparency when receiving physical CT money. Every purchase you make, CT gives you CT money that you can accept, decline or donate. The CT money is a small percent of the overall value, but it's meant to incentive the shopper to continue coming back and collecting more money, thus receiving a discount at CT.
The problem arises because CT doesn't actually track if you choose to decline the money. If you return the item for some reason, you are forced to pay back CT money value with real money value.
The entire issue is about the principle of doing business this way. I view the CT money as a free gift that CT decides to give away for purchasing at their store. Yes, you can say that some people will take advantage of this system, but overall, they good outweighs the bad (because CT still hands out money, so it must be working). You can choose to accept or decline this 'gift' that CT gives you. I did not ask CT to give me gifts, and why should I be forced to pay for this gift if I choose not to receive it?
Again, the main problem is tracking of the money. It's pennies, but in the grand scheme of things, it translates to thousands of dollars over a large customer base.
TLDR. It's about the principal of doing business.
Just reading the insert in my Triangle MC bill and noted the changes to the program. Effective August 1, 2019:
>Electronic Canadian Tire Money in your Triangle Rewards Account will expire if there has been a period of inactivity of 18 months of longer. To be inactive, you must not have collected CT Money or redeemed CT Money during the 18 month period.
and worse, the 18 month period started back in June 1, 2018.
I don't know how they get away with retroactively starting the inactivity period, but they give you just under 4 months to have activity on your account.
>We will commence the expiry of CT Money for inactive accounts as of December 1, 2019. This means that any account that neither collected nor redeemed CT Money since June 1, 2018 may be subject to expiry.
I love the last paragraph
>You may refuse the above changes and cancel your membership in the Program by sending us a written notice no later than on August 31, 2019. However, if you do, all CT Money that you have collected but not redeemed will be cancelled.
In other words, if you want to lose your CT Money faster, write us and let us know!
I blame it on inflation.
So, Canadian tire isn't giving out the CT money for cash/debit transactions now and want you to sign you up for the points card or app. They say they are going to start handing it out again after it's over. Do you think they will ultimately use this as an excuse to kill off the Canadian tire money?

Got my Triangle offers for the week and CT has $10 back for every $50 spent in PS Store Gift Cards & Plus subscriptions. Seems there is no limit!
Not quite as good as the ~$38 CD Keys deal recently but me โ and many others โ kept getting refunded. This is just as good to me!
It seems Triangle won't provide the details on the break down for Canadian Tire Money rewarded from each transaction.
The amount doesn't add up according to the spending transaction either. PC Optimum and Tangerine would provide detailed reward amount for each transaction.
What do you guys think? Or am I missing anything?

Received an email with this offer. Activated on CTFS. You can check your app as well. YMMV as with many CT promotions - but looks like a great time to redeem CT money if you have the offer.

Full terms in the attached screenshot as CT won't let me copy and paste - a lot to type. The part I could not capture was "No rain checks".
