Programming a bill acceptor

Hello, everyone.

So I am supposed to program a bill acceptor from scratch, but the type of machine I have is not very common, it is "KH-Q5 bill acceptor for RS232 interface burning method upgrade". As the name might suggest it uses an RS232 interface. Now,how can I upload the images from the machine into my computer, and how can I load my image processing program into the machine?

Thank you.

Need help reading an open-connector pulse signal from an Apex 7000 bill acceptor

I've been messing with this for a while now with no real luck and I think I've about hit the limit of my knowledge when it comes to Arduinos and circuits.

I have an Apex 7000 bill acceptor which is configured to send pulse outputs (1 pulse per dollar; 50ms on, 50ms off) and, while I was initially trying to count the actual pulses, for now, I would be happy with a simple TRUE/FALSE response. What I mean is, any time any amount of money is input, simply mark a variable as true. I'm using an Arduino Uno and originally attached a CHANGE interrupt to digital input 2 but, unless my code is horribly wrong, it looks like there are random pulses coming through the line, even when no money is inserted. I also have a 1k resistor pulling the pulse line from the acceptor up to the 5v pin of the arduino.

One of the last iterations of code I tested is here: http://pastebin.com/PdK9H1kP In this code, I'm still making an attempt to count the number of pulses per bill but, was getting false-triggers, even when everything was just sitting.

It is possible that I am misunderstanding how things are supposed to work so, maybe if someone can help me with the following, I can work things out. Otherwise, I'm absolutely open to suggestions or questions:

  • An "open collector" is a wire that receives a pretty basic signal (on/off; possibly varying voltages?) and it doesn't have to be part of a "circuit" to pass the signal, correct? What I mean by the last part is: as opposed to an LED, which would have both its positive and negative leads in one circuit, it's sort of like a "dangling" positive, which is why it can work as an input for the Arduino, without having to ground back to the Arduino's ground, like a switch would. (See my note at the end of the post, in case I'm wrong about it not needing to ground)

  • A "pulse" signal jumps back and forth between two voltages, which is the pulse. If you just plugged the pulse wire directly into the input pin of the Arduino and monitored whether the signal was LOW or HIGH, it would jump back and forth, correct? Because of this, we use a pull down/up resistor to either ground or a higher voltage, which sets that as the baseline and any changes can be calculated from that. In one of the examples below, they mention that they pull up to 5v with a 2k resistor and another I saw mentioned a 10k resistor but, all I have is a single 1k. How do you know whether to pull up or down and how do you calculate the resistance? Also, is "the resistance" th

Since it's home project im trying to make for fun and i wouldn't have problems with counterfeit bills i was thinking if i could use cam recognition for that?

Let's say i want to take something from vending machine and i dropped in 5 usd bill, can cam pick up it's a single 5 usd bill? Similar to face recognition

Morning ponderings and musings, and perhaps an idea

So I've been thinking about something for a long time now.

I'll try to make this post short, so apologies for in advance if it turns out to be a lot to read (edit: it fucking did, sorry!), but I gotta set the stage properly.

Throughout my experiences with addiction, to both alcohol and drugs, through both my own eyes and those of countless others (probably hundreds -- if not thousands -- of people I've interacted with), I've started seeing a pattern.

We (addicts) seem to fall into two broad categories:

  • The Rejecters. I'd say that this is the majority (myself included). Younger people who fell into addictions for whatever reason, but are either in denial or outright reject it. They tend to have a "default" baseline -- a mental place or state of being they were in before they embarked on the path of addiction -- that they yearn to go back to one day.
    .
Sometimes, when these people fall to absolute rock-bottom and cross boundaries they never foresaw themselves crossing, they even invent "temporary" identities; i.e. fake/street names and cover stories (this is much more common in the world of hard drugs than it is in the world of alcohol, for obvious reasons, but it's still present everywhere). i.e. It is not Amelia stealing from her parents and giving blowjobs for a nick of crack; it's Amie. Amelia is still in there somewhere, and one day she will come back, but this person currently robbing you at knife-point is not her, it's Amie.
  • The Acceptors. These people tend to be either those who started at a very young age (i.e. preteen), or older people who've been addicts for a very long time. They have no "safe spot" or "baseline" to go back to; even if they did at some point, it is long-forgotten and overwritten. Their poisons are now their safe spots, their places of refuge.
    .
Interestingly, these people tend to be much more stable and predictable than the first group, because they've accepted their addictions and built their lives around them. Or at least that is the case in my experience. I know so many people like this; here are just a few off the top of my head:
    • This Ukrainian guy I worked with in a warehouse (not an osha place lol). I was 18 and he was in his late 20's. He was the lead guy -- one who's been there the longest and who everybody came for advice to; he was also a severe alcoholic. Every morning he would come in with a bag of like 8 tall boys and put them into the workers' fridge next to the compressor. Then, through

CMV: The government should pay people if they donate a kidney

I'm mostly relying on Belgian/Dutch figures, but I doubt the math will be much different in other countries.

Dialysis is expensive. Very expensive. It's sadly also the only option for a lot of people.
In the Netherlands, it costs between €80-120k per person per year on dialysis. That is a lot of money being spent on keeping people alive and even then their QoL is severely diminished compared to actually having a functioning kidney.
Meanwhile, the cost of a kidney transplant surgery in Belgium is roughly €70k. The follow-up for the acceptor costs €5k per year and the follow-up for the donor is only a once-a-year appointment to have blood and urine samples analyzed which are relatively minor costs.

The problem is that there currently aren't enough kidneys to go around. So dialysis is the alternative. But people can perfectly live with only 1 kidney. And the surgery to remove a kidney is relatively minor and also relatively safe. So considering the impact on the donor is minimal but it would be a huge benefit both to the acceptor and the government's finances, I think governments should incentivize people donating a kidney by paying them for it. With an average lifespan of 15 years for a healthy kidney from a live donor, society stands to save more than €1m in costs related to the acceptor's medical bills. So even if you apply an incentive of €100k for the donor, it would still be incredibly cost-efficient.

A woman skipped forward a few frames on the bus

This just happened a few moments ago. I’m currently on a metro bus heading home, sitting about dead center of the vehicle (so four rows back from the front entrance and the driver with the automated fare collector next to him). Since the start of the route I was the only person riding and it stayed that way until we got closer to the city and a woman boarded. I was just kinda in my own little world, listening to music on my headphones but for whatever reason I started watching her fiddling with the bill acceptor, trying to get it to accept crinkled dollars. She struggles for some time and finally gets her fare in, then she turns my way to walk down the center isle towards the seats. This is when it gets weird, she like phases forward a good ten steps down the isle to about where I’m seated. I don’t mean she moved super fast or took a giant step or she somehow looked closer than she was… I mean one second she’s at the front of the bus and the next she’s halfway down the isle of the bus. This woman moved half an entire bus-length in less than a second. If it were a film it would look like a handful of frames were cut out and the reel spliced back together. After that she just casually continued to the back of the bus. I wasn’t sleepy anything like that, hell, I don’t think I even blinked. Super weird event in an otherwise boring bus ride.
