py4go: Bidirectional embedding of Python in Go

https://github.com/tliron/py4go

Call Python 3 functions and methods from within your Go program while exposing Go functions and methods to Python.

This is not an implementation of Python in Go. Rather, py4go works by embedding the CPython runtime into your Go program using cgo functionality.

The expected use cases are not low-latency integration, but rather tight bidirectional integration. You can combine the full Go ecosystem with the full Python ecosystem.

Though you can achieve some integration by using Go's exec package to run python, with py4go you get fine-grained access to individual functions, objects, methods, and variables.

Calling Python code from Go is relatively straightforward because Python is a dynamic language and CPython is an interpreted runtime. Exposing Go code to Python is more involved as it requires writing wrapper functions in C. In the future we are hoping to make this easier, perhaps via a C code generator based on static analysis of function signatures and types.

Confusion with bidirectional switch using MOSFETS

I’m trying to understand the bidirectional switch circuit in this post https://www.homemade-circuits.com/bidirectional-switch/

The principle under β€œBasic Functioning Details” makes sense, as well as the p-channel mosfet circuit, but I’m having trouble understanding the n-channel mosfet circuit under β€œUsing N-Channel MOSFETS” (image linked below). What is the voltage at the common source node between the two mosfets?

Say A is 6V, B is 0V == GND, so the Charge Pump (V_aux) outputs 12V. I would think at this point the common source gets pulled up to that 12V through the 10K resistor, as it’s normally floating? But then how does the V_gs become > 0 for either mosfet? Turning ON the low-side switch at the bottom of the circuit would just divide the voltage at the gate terminals to 0.01 * V_aux right? Which I assume the common source will also get pulled up to.

I clearly have something wrong. Can somebody help me understand this?

The circuit in question: https://www.homemade-circuits.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/07/Discrete-Implementation-of-BPS-Using-N-MOSFETs.png

Thoughts on Deborah Capaldi's work and bidirectional intimate partner violence

For this post, I will number code my sources. I hope that isn't too confusing, but I also don't feel like going to the effort of remembering how to source an article APA style.

Quick trigger warning of sort: I am discussing what could be termed mutual abuse. My intention is not to invalidate the experiences of people who have gone through abuse. I know that some people who have gone through abuse may have been told by their abuser that they themselves were also abusive as a manipulative tactic, and this post may be triggering for people who have gone through this. I understand that menslib isn't supposed to be a safe space, but I did want to put that warning out there.

I hope this fits well here.

I was reading a blog post from Glenn Sacks that inspired me to make this post. Glenn Sacks' post discussed a study by Dr. Deborah Capaldi that was presented at an IPV conference in Los Angeles in 2009. The blog post itself was interesting to read and mostly pulled quotes from the study itself. The problem is, there is no source for the study in the article and my google sleuthing has failed me; I cannot find the original study. I will still provide the link to the post since it's relevant for the rest of what I want to discuss. This is the second most important link for this post: https://www.glennsacks.com/column.php?id=227&fbclid=IwAR1ouFu-v2bwDtRm2T0sr8ss3HXRwBA9uIYoVxS9djBiz3fPKhvXw81aQOw

Fortunately, Dr. Capaldi has a wide body of research to draw from. Here is a study that is very similar to the one that the blog post was written about. This is the most important link for this post: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC1858633/

After reading this, I did some digging on Dr. Capaldi and found that she has a significant body of research on at-risk young men, some of which are about young men and physical partner violence (PPV). In her research about young men and PPV, she seems to work under the idea that a man perpetrating PPV is operating within a dyad system (consisting of himself and his partner), along with the broader societal conditions in which he was raised. This means that, among other things, she studies bidirectional violence between two partners as well as unidirectional violence from one partner directed to another. From what little I've read, it seems lik

I am actively looking into replacing my combustion engine car against the Audi etron. I believe that the etron, as part of the VW conglomerate, should be capable of bidirectional charging and therefore be able to serve as an emergency power source.

If that is the case, what kind of equipment (charging station etc.) would I need to make this work.

New device might allow for bidirectional DC charging, i.e. Bolt could power your house?

The Wallbox Quasar 2 was announced at CES.

If this is fully compatible with the Bolt, which is a BIG if, then it would allow the Bolt to power your house in the event of a power outage. It would also allow you to charge your Bolt at home at 11.5kW instead of 7.7kW because it's not EVSE, it's a DC charger. (This only has a hope of being compatible with Bolts with the DCFC option as it connects to the DC pins on the CCS1 connector.)

This is highly interesting to me because you'd have to spend in the neighborhood of $20k (at least) to get 66kWh of batteries, and another $3-5k on an inverter, when this unit should cost $4-5k and you already own the battery in your Bolt.

"WebSockets are bidirectional." How does one send from the server to the client?

Here is a typical template for a WebSocket server on node.

var WebSocketServer = require('websocket').server;
var http = require('http');

var server = http.createServer(function(request, response) {
  // process HTTP request. Since we're writing just WebSockets
  // server we don't have to implement anything.
});
server.listen(1337, function() { });

// create the server
wsServer = new WebSocketServer({
  httpServer: server
});

// WebSocket server
wsServer.on('request', function(request) {
  var connection = request.accept(null, request.origin);

  // This is the most important callback for us, we'll handle
  // all messages from users here.
  connection.on('message', function(message) {
    if (message.type === 'utf8') {
      // process WebSocket message
    }
  });

  connection.on('close', function(connection) {
    // close user connection
  });
});

Let's say that my node server receives (or self generates) non WebSocketServer events that require it to send messages to the client without first receiving a message from the client. How does one send data to the client in such a case?

Example: my node server receives regular socket UDP messages (not WebSocket messages) from another client 10x a second. I want to repackage those messages and send them to the client (running in a browser) without the browser client asking for them first.

Specifically, what object (of the websocketServer ?) does the send come from ? I assume it would be 'connection', but how does one obtain the connection object outside of responding to the websocketserver event from the browser client?

For example:

//send a message every second
var messageCount = 1;

function sendMessage()
    {
    wsServer.sendMessage("This is a test.");
    //wsServer.send("Message #" + messageCount);
    messageCount++;
    }

let timer = setInterval(() => sendMessage(),1000);

This results in the error message "TypeError: wsServer.send is not a function" or "TypeError: wsServer.sendMessage is not a function". This makes sense because there is no WebSocketServer send function, only for WebSocket. Do I create a WebSocket on the same http socket and use it to send ?

Thanks.

bidirectional channel antipattern?

Quick stupid question - if I have a bidirectional channel between goroutines A and B (who are both polling it), and A throws something on it intended for B but B is busy and A gets back to polling before B, presumably A picks up the message that A put on the channel for B. So fundamentally this sort of thing is an anti-pattern, right? Is there a way to do this without spinning up two directed channels?

I'm trying to get rid of my iCloud subscription and am searching for a self-hosted alternative to keep all my photos in sync between my devices.

A very popular app around here seems to be PhotoSync, but I have only read about use cases where photos from one device had to be archived on a central storage.

In my case the app additionally has to check if there are new photos on the storage and copy them back to the mobile device, to keep my iPhone and iPad in sync. Has anyone of you used PhotoSync in a similar way and maybe can share how you set it up and how reliable it works.

Is there a Linux DE with bidirectional workspaces

I mean something like gnome workspaces but being able to create them in both directions. As an example I could have a setup with 3 horizontal workspaces like:

| 1 | 2 | 3 |

And I can create a new workspace in any of the spots with '|', But I would like to have something like:

| 1 | 2 | 3 |

------ ------

| 4 | | 5 |

------

| 6 |

So from workspace 1 I can access workspaces easily 2 and 4 pressing Windows Key + Alt + Arrows. I know there are gnome extensions for only vertical workspaces and for having a workspace matrix, but the first option doesn't have this bidirectionality that I really want and the second option only allows for a fixed number of workspaces, and I'd like to keep this behaviour where they are created 'on demand'. Plus them being gnome extensions makes both kind of finicky and likely to break with new updates.

Is there a DE where something like this exists with good support? Could be what makes me finally change from gnome.

Sorry if this should be on r/linux4noobs

Question about deleting files after a bidirectional sync duplicated data

Newbie here and non-IT person who was handed this responsibility at work:

Last Oct I set up a new NAS to replace & expand our ageing/failing one. I created 3 shared folders to control access to data and using Cloud Sync set up continuous cloud backup for all 3 folders into 1 bucket. What I didn't realize it the setup defaulted to bidirectional which resulted in all the files syncing across all 3 shared root folders. (I think that's the term)

I slowly began deleting the ones that were in the wrong place and just finished late December. The final folder, #3, has a #recycle bin enabled and we ended up with files in there I did not delete. Now I'm scared to delete the ones that actually don't belong in folder #3 in case it causes them to be deleted in the actual folder they are meant to be in...

Since I don't know how any of this actually works and have been learning as I go, can't find answers in a simple search, I'm turning here.

If I delete data from root folder #3, will it also be deleted from root folder #1 or 2 where it's meant to be stored and currently is? Or did the bidirectional sync from the cloud storage make copies of all the data in each of the other folders, so it's fine to delete the redundant ones?

Thanks!

Is VIP kinda like a bidirectional NAT? Or is it only for destination NAT as I thought?

Universal Bidirectional "T" or "Y" Train Intersection Blueprint

Intersection overview showing how to build it and all possible paths. Remove whatever paths you don't need. Seeing the whole pattern helps me remember how to build it in the future.

TLDR: I'm using this same pattern for every "T" or "Y" intersection in my train system cause it's symmetrical, repeatable, and I can alter the directions of tracks later without disrupting the existing train lines. Any 3 paths work in the above pattern, with the exception that 2 connected paths cannot be immediately next to each other.

Hi there! I'm currently working on expanding my world's train network post Update 5. I'm using a bidirectional system and I stick to my grid so I already had the basic "T" intersection understood. However, it's so much easier to build some 45 degree tracks to cover longer distances where a strictly North-South / East-West track would lead to some excessive travel distances.

So, like a lot of my builds, I wanted a pattern I could learn for not only 45 degree tracks, but a pattern for handling the intersections of these tracks.

In the above pattern, you can see the 8 possible path entries to the intersection: 4 in the 90 degree orientation and 4 at 45 degree angles from my grid. Using this pattern, you can connect any 3 paths (this is for a "T" or "Y" type intersection). The only exception is the paths cannot be immediately next to each other. I tried for a bit to get an intersection that could allow for that, but it was so huge as to be impractical for my world. I also reasoned that, in general, if I find myself needing a curve that tight, I can just have another intersection further down one of the lines.

The other feature of this design is that, as my world expands, I may need to move certain train lines around. If my intersections are designed with this pattern in mind, I can come back to them later and alter the path if needed, without moving the existing tracks I wish to keep. I like planning for the future.

I also do a similar pattern for every "Round-a-bout" in my world as well. I can demonstrate that too if people are interested.

Hope this helps anyone facing a similar problem. Thanks!
