Long but please please read through. Context : Dad started watching F1 in his teens and was a huge fan of Prost so obviously hated Senna. So naturally me and my brother started F1 early when I was 8(2007). I was a Lewis Hamilton fan since then and for that precise reason, my brother opposed Lewis and eventually became Sebastian fan and now supports Max for the championship. But if one of the drivers perform awesome moves on the track, or pulls out a legendary quali lap, both of us genuinely enjoy it and talk about it for a long time. I was genuinely disappointed when Max couldn't race in Silverstone. We had same opinions in both the crashes - Silverstone and Monza. I almost cried when Seb crashed out in Germany. I was still supporting Lewis, but the image of zillion cameramen surrounding Seb in the pitlane broke my heart.
But given the hate and huge division of opinions in reddit and twitter, I thought we were some higher level people for not being hugely biased and hating the guts of other driver.
But I realised it stemmed from our dad. Today, we were watching Schumacher together and Senna's crash scene came. My dad paused and was like "That was the season, young gun Schmui was challenging a legend Senna. I wanted Schumi to win badly that season and hated Senna's guts. But when he crashed in a crucial race(Imola), my immediate reaction was happiness but the moment when Senna was lifelessly thrown away in the two-wheeled crushed car, I started crying. It's a repeat of Friday. Everyone was sure he died. The legend of the sport lost his life" 2 legends of the sport, Ayrton Senna is no more and Michael Schumacher cannot lead a normal life.
But then it hit me, this is probably the last time my childhood hero, a sport legend, Lewis Hamilton would challenge for a championship. And all this can be over in one single race. In one single corner. We're incredibly lucky to have a once in a generational talent, a future potential multiple WDC facing off the previous generational talent and a 7 time world champion. What a truly incredible moment for the sport. I, for one feel incredibly fortunate to be witnessing this and I'm enjoying this to the fullest.
People thought Senna would dominate for the next 5/6 years. He died suddenly and legend, Michael Schumacher happened. People thought Alonso would dominate the next few years. But alas, no team he was in could replicate what Ferrari did. Even Ferrari themselves. Seb's reign ended in 2013 and no one expected Lewis
