A list of puns related to "Asl Visual"
Because more than half of the instructional videos my ASL instructor has posted to Canvas have her kid screaming and blasting the TV in the background, even though my ASL instructor's in another room with the door closed!
Definitely very nice to still be able to get everything with the video muted.
(Tl;dr at the bottom.)
I make visual artwork as my career and hobby.
When I first saw someone signing ASL, it profoundly inspired me in many ways. Speaking as a graphic designer, I love that ASL is all visual and how that parallels the way I communicate through my work as a designer.
Like many hearing creators, I was inspired to make art based on ASL because my limited exposure to the language resonated so strongly with me.
Instead, I decided that it was my duty to understand this new (to me) community of people to make sure that my art would be respectful.
Itβs been about a year since I was first inspired by ASL and I have created zero pieces of artwork around it. This is because, after countless hours of watching ASL videos, joining Deaf communities online (because of the pandemic) and watching what people had to say about the nuances of their community, I learned that it isnβt respectful for an artist to make art based on a community they arenβt a part of. Also, I learned that static art, like graphic design, can never really convey the depth that is the ASL languageβit is so much more than images of the ASL alphabet.
I realized that my time is so much better spent learning to be an ally to a community that has impacted me so positively.
It becomes our responsibility as creators to know when to step back from inspiration instead of always acting on it. Our art impacts many people once we put it out into the world and itβs hard to pull it back. We must understand to appreciate inspiration and learn to leave it to those it rightfully belongs to.
Tl;dr: ASL is amazingly, visually inspiring. However, hearing artists need to focus on being allies to the community instead of creating art based on a community they are not part of. That inspiration belongs to the Deaf community, not the hearing.
Hello,
I'm am hoping to get some help for designing some visual ASL sheets with common words/phrases that I can display in my workplace for our one employee! I can tell she feels left out a lot as only one person knows sign in the workplace and is on the opposite shift as her. However, she works with a whole team and can hardly communicate (at least them to her, she is very capable to communicate with others).
I'm truly hoping to get or make some sheets for some common/simple phrases and words that others can use to make her feel a little more welcome and thought of. She is really a good worker and does the small things people don't realize, and I truly hope I can get help on this to make her feel cared about!
We make HVAC units in our facility so words related to that would be fantastic!
"Go, Help, Unit, Hot, Cold, Pipe, Door, Bottom, Top, Blower, Divider, Electrical, Sticker, Bag, Cardboard, Wire, Lunch, Break, etc etc"
are all good examples of things we would love to have on these sheets, as well as basic interactions so they can have basic chats beyond work.
"Hows are you/Response", "Have a good day!", and such!
ANYTHING HELPS! - Thanks in Advance!

I'm looking for a book that taught the American sign language alphabet to kids. I checked it out from the public library around 2002. It was in the kid's section. It was not old, but the library does not appear to have it any longer.
It had big pages, something like landscape 8x11. Each page was full color. I want to say it as photographs, but it could have been photorealistic paintings. It was not cartoony.
The pages I remember vividly are
P for Paint, where the lower part of the middle finger forming the letter is dipping into paint and
Y is for Yoyo where a yoyo string is wrapped around the pinky and thumb with the yoyo suspended beside it.
I'm looking for it because I still recall these two images so vividly. I'm hard of hearing and my husband and I are starting to try to learn to sign. Made me want to track down this book.
Unfortunately, I can't recall the cover, the author, etc. I think my only hope is for someone here to own it or have read it and recall more about it than I did.
Thanks!
Edit to add more detail.
Hi all, some of you might be interested in this resource that has been in development at my university - a website that provides a visual dictionary of American Sign Language and French Sign Language (Langue des Signes Francaise) side by side. The base language can be changed from American English to French as well. Please feel free to provide any comments/suggestions for improvement or let me know if a different sub would be better for this post. Thanks! ASL/LSF Visual Dictionary
Hello r/deaf. I am a hearing college student. I'm currently taking asl 1 in college. I am really enjoying it over spoken language. However I'm finding it more difficult than other classes. Part of the reason is because I have a visual processing disorder and difficulty with my motor skills development (both extremely crucial to ASl). Basically the visual processing disorder means that my brain is prone to shut down easily when overloaded with information (eg finger spelling). I don't want to give up because this community seems so cool just to give up on because of an issue that slows me down. But at the same time it's a class and I can't go at my own pace. Are their any websites that you guys would suggest that are fun to use and teach asl? Thank you guys I can use all the help I can get!
Also are there any other people here who have a visual processing disorder also finding it more troublesome to learn sign language than others?
Dear r/asl,
I'm currently working on research regarding gestures and signs (this is no homework). Especially, the semiotics of both. I'm currently working on a visualization of signs. Since I am not fluent in ASL nor do I understand much of it, I want to make it accessible and comprehensible for ASL readers. Could someone here guess/verify what word I am trying to visualize here:
I want to translate this highly poetic sentence:
"Today I searched you in the rhyme that sleeps in all words"
I... don't know how to begin with. My first attempt:
NOW+DAY I SEARCH YOU.
(one side) ALL WORD RHYME SLEEP (other side). I SEARCH THERE (points at first side).
Is that grammatical? My issue is that with metaphors is that semantics can't help predict syntax much because everything is possible. I could imagine "ALL WORD RHYME SLEEP" being misconstrued as
etc
that How does ASL handle metaphorical locations, where the "in" is not clear. Often the question is poorly posed and we need to figure whether "SLEEP" is the best sign, right?
Maybe, HIDE is a better concept? Anyway, I know a ton of people ask about subordination and locations in ASL, but I thought the topic of metaphors is rarely asked about?
Thanks!
i looked at the resources that was recommended but it feels like too much and i dunno how to slowly get into it without that feeling so if anyone has any idea where i can start then please say
I'm a barber and recently I had a deaf customer come in for the first time. We communicated through texting and it went well. He was a very nice client and I'm hoping he'll return and I'm always hoping for my clients to refer their friends so I wanted to be considerate and learn to sign a few things. I've learned some things like how to spell his name out, 'how are you?', 'i'm fine', 'thank you', 'excuse me', 'haircut', 'shorter', 'sideburns'. but I'd like to be able to ask 'was last time good/did the last haircut work out?' 'would you like the same thing?' 'shampoo' 'is the water too hot/too cold?' 'hair clippers' 'see you next time' and maybe some things related to paying for the haircut. Can someone point me in the right direction to look for these phrases and other haircut-specific signs? On youtube the only things I could find were very limited to specific hairstyles.
Thank you in advance!
Hello. Ive been learning ASL for the past 2 weeks, Ive learned the ABC's, some words, expressions and how to form a sentence. (I'm using Bill Vicars channel and website) One of the words I learned is clean/nice. I know that there are probably many words in ASL that have the same sign but the problem I have with clean/nice is that in most cases the words seem to be interchangeable. Ex. This is a clean table, this is a nice table. You look clean, you look nice.
So how do figure out if someone means clean or nice while they're signing? Does it not matter? Do you use facial expressions to show if you mean clean or nice? Thanks for the help.
I know some people with aphantasia donβt feel that it hurt their ability to learn sign language, so if youβre one of those, your perspective is not the one Iβm looking for here. For those who feel like not being able to picture the signs made them struggle, what helped you to learn it well?
I don't want to step on anybody's toes here, but the amount of non-dad jokes here in this subreddit really annoys me. First of all, dad jokes CAN be NSFW, it clearly says so in the sub rules. Secondly, it doesn't automatically make it a dad joke if it's from a conversation between you and your child. Most importantly, the jokes that your CHILDREN tell YOU are not dad jokes. The point of a dad joke is that it's so cheesy only a dad who's trying to be funny would make such a joke. That's it. They are stupid plays on words, lame puns and so on. There has to be a clever pun or wordplay for it to be considered a dad joke.
Again, to all the fellow dads, I apologise if I'm sounding too harsh. But I just needed to get it off my chest.
Edit: Iβm saying IF sign language was universal and mandatory for everyone to learn THEN there would be no language barriers. Sorry if I miscommunicated my point before. Words are hard.
I have been looking around for this, but Iβm not exactly sure what to search lol. I want to know how to sign βthatβ.
All of the articles I found were using that in the following way;
βGive it to that girlβ βThat oneβ βI love that songβ
I want to know how to sign it this way;
βThe girl that has red hairβ βThe song that saysβ¦β βThe movie that starsβ¦β
Is it the same sign? Any input would help! Thank you!

Next as I said the whitepaper was just posted today. Reading through this filled me with more confidence in the project. They have plans laid out all the way through August 2023. With the development of both a learning game and a teaching platform. Youtube videos IN ASL soon to go live as well!

I'm not even referencing the NSFW, I'm saying Dad jokes are corny, and sometimes painful, not sexual
