Why are the ARIA Charts so bad?
Looking through ARIA's list of the top 50 Australian songs of 2021 and by my rough count less than 10 of them were actually released in 2021.
The list also includes classis songs like Thunderstruck, The Horses and Khe Sahn.
Only 3 songs in the list made the hottest 100, you'd think there would be way more crossover? Even on the full list, only about a dozen of Australia's "most popular songs of the year" made it into the public countdown.
Is the ARIA algorithm just uniquely terrible, overrating re-listens of old-music and under-valuing new releases? Or is the state of mainstream Australian music really that dire?
