I understand how AlphaGo Zero chooses its moves, it uses its policy network to guide a Monte Carlo Simulation, and then it evaluates the ends (leaves) of each node. Then it finds a way to average the evaluations to choose a move.
What I don't understand is what method they use for learning. How do they mark whether the policy chose the correct paths in the Monte Carlo simulation? Why did they chose the loss function they did? (Page 355)
Stage 14
This is supposed to be the race's queen stage. It will be false flat until Arabba 85 Km through the race where the riders start taking on the Sella Ronda loop clockwise, passing through the finish line at Corvara for the first time. Once the riders return to Arabba, they will head further down the valley to Selva di Cadore where the hardest climb of the day will start: that's the fearsome Passo di Giau (9,5 Km 9,2%). The race doesn't finish on top of Giau, as the riders will have to descent to Pocol and make their way up the longer but flatter Passo di Valpairola before descending down to San Cassiano for the final short uphill run in Corvara.

In stage 13 we had Jungels losing his Maglia Rosa for Amador, Nibali sprinting for 4-bonus seconds, Brambilla and Ulissi dropped from top10, while Fuglsang and Uran joined it. Pozzovivo, caught behind crashes in previous stages, seems to be the best climber outside Top10 and looks capable to enter it. A big breakaway is likely again - Cunego, Visconti, Denifl in the fight for Maglia Azurra may repeat what we've seen in stage 13 while Bardiani, Orica and Katusha should be there too, as these teams missed the breakaway. Riders who rested the most today should be among the best breakaway bets.
Astana looks strong, Movistar has two cards to play with Amador and Valverde - and even Visconti is now under 4 minutes behind - while other GC riders should attack without much help from teammates. Their teams will be wise if they send strong domestiques to the breakaway who could drop to help them in case of attack.
