🎃Welcome to the second week of Horror Club.🎃

This week's theme is plastic surgery in horror. The desire to look hot, or rather the desire to have the features most valued by one's culture at the present moment and stave off the aging of the body through cutting and injecting the skin contains its own obvious ties to horror. The instagram page of your average plastic surgeon probably contains more grotesque images than you're going to see in any of these films. The origins of plastic surgery's melding with the horror genre can perhaps be traced back to the gothic 1818 novel Frankenstein, where a scientist create life out of dead bodies and creates something he can't control. Man takes it upon himself to play God or play Nature but he doesn't have the mastery, Death is the house and the house always wins!!! Surgeons can tighten the skin, plump the lips, perk up the tits but the body continues to age and proceed towards its inevitable fate. There's nothing that can make a face stay young or beautiful or a body stay alive, but who has to think about longevity? And as always when a woman is transformed to be more lovable, get paid, or pull one over on a man (usually want to go for all three) the ghost of Hitchcock's Vertigo appears.

In Eyes Without a Face and The Skin I Live In the doctor main characters think that their medical genius can fix the mistakes they've made and reset the clocks. These movies also owe something to fairytales, the princess locked away in the castle. In In My Skin our heroine, Esther, is both surgeon and patient and is seeking out not beauty and not exactly death, but the exploration of what happens when cutting into the body does not serve the purpose of aesthetic enhancement. In Scalpel, as in The Skin I Live In, the surgeries are done to recreate the face of someone dead and lost but the subjects have their own wills and aims. As in Eyes Without a Face, the surgeries in Helter Skelter don't last and need frequent adjustment to maintain the illusion of natural perfection and maintain the power this beauty grants.

🎃Welcome to the third week of Horror Club.🎃

This week's theme is back to school, women in terror edition. The movie selections span from straight forward slashers/giallos to supernatural and metaphysical horror.

Colleges and high schools, as with summer camps and isolated cabins or castles, are some of the most obvious and popular settings for horror films. You have a cast of young people together on the precipice of full adulthood with none of the responsibilities or security. They're unable to rely on the real adults to save them, these authority figures who are supposed to protect them are either impotent, clueless, paralyzed by their own compliance, or outright looking to kill the youth. Half of these movies take place at boarding schools, which like with nunneries, are popular settings for exploitation movies for some of the obvious reasons (lots of women together, glimpses of a cloistered world, lesbian intrigue, sadomasochistic disciplining, playing to the fantasy of being the one man in forbidden harem). The House That Screamed, an early giallo and proto-slasher (predating Black Christmas, the movie that inspired Halloween), and Picnic at Hanging Rock both take place at the turn of the century, when young women sent away to prison-like schools would have been even more isolated than their contemporary equivalents. A pair of these movies also have notes of Psycho in their plotting. The school in Even the Wind is Afraid is haunted by a ghost, Suspiria's academy is controlled by ancient forces, and Picnic at Hanging Rock who knows what causes the events of Valentine's Day 1900.

Our first two movies, The Slumber Party Massacre and The House on Sorority Row, both came out in 1982 during the slasher gold rush set off by Halloween and then Friday the 13th. The House that Screamed and Torso are classics of the giallo genre at its best, with Torso holding some of the genre's greatest balance between sickening violence and its beautiful cast in their beautiful clothes and houses. (I'll acquiesce to the thousands of horror bloggers who have noted that Suspiria isn't a true giallo (a real Frankenstein's monster situation), despite Suspiria being what first comes to mind to the casual's fan when giallo is mentioned. Whatever to those who say The House That Screamed doesn't fall into the genre because it was made in Spain.) Suspiria and The Picnic at Hanging Rock's critical adoration and importance to cinema speak for themselves, but always good to check

On April 11, 1953, a 21-years-old woman called Wilma Montesi was found dead on a public beach in Torvaianica, near Rome. Her mysterious death led to prolonged investigations around the allegations of drug parties and sex orgies in the Roman high society. Two members of the Roman high society were investigated, causing a big scandal in Italy. Subsequently they were both absolved of all charges. The case remains unsolved, including the exact circumstances of her death.

• The discovery of her body

Wilma Montesi was born in 1932 in Rome: her family was of modest origin, her father worked as a carpenter and her mother was a housewife. They all lived in Rome. At the time of her disappearance she was engaged to a policeman (who was working in Potenza at that time) whom she was going to marry in seven months. She was considered to be very beautiful and wanted to be an actress (she had already acted in small roles in movies). Everyone described her as reserved, elegant and really excited for her wedding.

On April 11, 1953 (the day before Easter), around 7:30 am, her body was discovered on a public beach in Torvaianica, near Rome. She had been missing since April 9. Her body was found by a worker who was having breakfast on the beach. She was lying in a prone position, her head was immersed in the water. She was partially dressed and her clothes were soaked: her shoes, skirt, stockings, suspenders and her handbag were missing. The doctor that had arrived on the scene stated that her body was not stiff and she had probably died 18-24 hours before. He thought that it was an accidental death or a suicide.

• Wilma's disappearance

When the news of the discovery was disclosed newspapers came out with extensive articles, although the investigators had banned the access to the mortuary where the body of the victim was kept. Nevertheless, a reporter managed to gain access and see the body. The description he provided appeared in the newspaper the next day and it allowed her father to show up to identify the body. From the reconstruction of the last moments of her life it emerged that she had not returned home for dinner on the evening of April 9, which was unusual. Her mother, along with her other daughter, had spent the afternoon at the cinema and stated that Wilma had declined to join them and sa

I don't want to step on anybody's toes here, but the amount of non-dad jokes here in this subreddit really annoys me. First of all, dad jokes CAN be NSFW, it clearly says so in the sub rules. Secondly, it doesn't automatically make it a dad joke if it's from a conversation between you and your child. Most importantly, the jokes that your CHILDREN tell YOU are not dad jokes. The point of a dad joke is that it's so cheesy only a dad who's trying to be funny would make such a joke. That's it. They are stupid plays on words, lame puns and so on. There has to be a clever pun or wordplay for it to be considered a dad joke.

Again, to all the fellow dads, I apologise if I'm sounding too harsh. But I just needed to get it off my chest.

Hi everyone!! I made a post the other day about how names might be perceived differently by people born in 1990 vs. 1960 vs. 1930. A great point that was raised by many commenters is that today's most popular names (chosen by parents born in 1990ish, aka Millennial Megan) seem to be like "Grandma/pa" or "old lady/man" names to their parents (people born in 1960ish, aka Boomer Barbara). So here's that data!

Below are comparisons of the name lists in 2020 and 1900. These are the names that were common among the age cohort that included both Barbara's grandparents and grandchildren (being chosen by parents today, e.g. Megan).

Di quest’anno ho visto 130 titoli intorno al 2014. Vanno di moda l’horror, il noir, Betty Grable, i cartoni Disney, i personaggi seriali e i film patriottici.

In Italia
Sono molti gli esempi di attori di teatro che tentano di approdare al cinema. In alcuni casi, come i de Filippo, la transizione è positiva. Altrove invece gli esiti non sono felicissimi sul lungo periodo, ad esempio “Colpi di Timone” di Gennaro Righelli è duro da digerire. La tradizione italiana nel melodramma spinge alla produzione di film del genere operistico, si tratta di adattamenti di opere liriche, ma alla gente piacevano molto anche i cosiddetti polpettoni, soap strappalacrime con personaggi a cui capita di tutto e di più. “Catene invisibili”, “Un colpo di pistola”, “Violette nei capelli”, “Tragica notte”, “Fari nella nebbia”, sono titoli d’epoca. Alida Valli era tra le star più amate, e la vediamo in “Addio Kira” e “Noi vivi” insieme al giovane Rossano Brazzi. Le star anni ’30 come Elsa Merlini, Nino Besozzi, Enrico Viarisio ed Evi Maltagliati cedono lentamente il passo a una nuova generazione di attori, tra cui i più promettenti sono Andrea Checchi (lo vediamo in “Malombra” di Soldati), Valentina Cortese, Massimo Girotti, Carla del Poggio. Tuttavia, la scena cult dell’anno è il seno nudo di Clara Calamai in “La cena delle beffe”, che è un film godibile indipendentemente da tale scena. Da poco passato alla regia, Vittorio de Sica gira il sentimentale “Un garibaldino al convento”, mentre Aldo Fabrizi è la star popolare per eccellenza e si vede in “Avanti c’è posto”. Il mio film italiano preferito di quest’anno è “4 passi fra le nuvole”, una delicata storia diretta da Blasetti, in cui Gino Cervi, che vende cioccolatini, prende a cuore le sorti della sventurata Adriana Benetti. È un film che all’epoca mi era parso molto moderno a confronto con gli altri titoli italiani dello stesso periodo.

La guerra mette in difficoltà l’industria cinematografica e c’è una contrazione di titoli, ma non mancano le idee. In Francia sono attivi Clouzot, Carné, Duvivier e Clair (beh in realtà gli ultimi due sono in prestito a Hollywood), abbiamo poi gli esordi di David Lean, e del duo Powell-Pressburger, che sono una firma tipica del decennio (“Volo senza ritorno”) ed esce anche un film del longevo De Oliveira, però il cult è di Alberto Cavalcanti, che è un regista nato in Brasile che quest’anno gira “Went the day well?”.
